Zen 4 wouldn’t make sense, at best Zen 3 since it’s literally a drag a drop architectural upgrade from Zen 2, but I even doubt that as it’s financially much cheaper to just order 100 million Zen 2 CPUs for both the base PS5 and PS5 Pro, then to order 80m Zen 2 for PS5 and 20m Zen 3 for PS5 Pro.

As much as I would prefer it to have been Zen 3 (it would have helped a lot with CPU bottleneck FPS).

Anyone who actually makes a realistic comparison will see that the PS5 Pro is actually an incredibly good value. It's basically a $700 GPU and you get all the other stuff for free.

Look at xbox they charge $600 for a 2tb 10TF console with bare bones RT support and no upscaler. (or controller features or tempest or hardware decompression)

VS

PS5 Pro $700 2tb SSD with a 30+TF advanced RDNA 4 RT and a full hardware upscaler that's very close to DLSS. (Plus all the other PS5 benefits)

PS5 Pro at $700 when you actually look at what you get is a fantastic value, it's a huge upgrade.

I personally wouldn’t say it was a letdown because the start of the gen really did make me feel like it was a new gen, between the tech (ps5 + dualsense) & the 1st party games, but now it feels like a mid-gen hiatus due to less 1st party games (except for Astro Bot it really did fill a void).

Completely agree on the PS5 not being used to its fullest potential though.

& now the wait is till 2025 when we’ll actually (hopefully) see the potential of base PS5 & pro.

Why do people keep making that point about cellphones. Gaming consoles can't do half of what those phones are capable of doing. I can connect my Samsung Galaxy to a monitor and change it into a desktop computer with access to productivity apps. There are also thousands of apps that enable additional functionality all while being portable.

Those graphics cards from Nvidia are overpriced but they still have many use cases outside of gaming. For example anyone working with AI, video editing or graphics design will appreciate what those cards have to offer. Steam hardware survey has revealed consistently over the years that gamers tend to buy the cheaper midrange cards while people who game professionally or have use cases outside of gaming tend to buy the expensive high end cards.

It's fine in a way charging that high for an optional console, but next gen when you actually need that console to play a game, they need the numbers on a console as their money is in software. Pricing it as high as the Pro means the vast majority of casual gamers say no thank you. It's the enthusiasts already with a PS5 not someone without a PS5 who are paying 7-800 for a console.

Actually, the difference is FAR greater this time around.

The PS4 Pro was just a PS4 with basically two GPU's mirrored. The PS5 uses an enhanced RDNA 3 chip with unreleased RDNA 4 RT. PS5 Pro is also it's the first console to use AI upscaling, something that will be in all future consoles and graphics cards.

Last gen RT wasn't even a thing, and checkerboard was much better than it was given credit for especially when you consider that it was the first hardware upscaler before DLSS and FSR, but AI upscaling/PSSR is in itself a generational leap.

And the rest of what you said is just gibberish that contradicts the general consensus including from DF and other journalists that have seen the Pro.

And there have always been different levels of optimization in games, it's unrelated to hardware completely. More powerful hardware benefits both optimized and unoptimized games.

No. The quality of the stream depends on your network not the console itself. You get the best results when the PS5 is connected with a UTP cable.

If the game has RT on the PS5 Pro the RT is going to be on the screen on your Portal too.

The Portal is basically just displaying a video broadcast from your console, it's just streamed with super low latency so it feels like your playing a game and not watching a movie.

The talking point that I feel is completely ignored by 'journalists' is that it will mostly be current owners of PS5 who are buying the Pro, rather than consumers who are new to Playstation.

In this regard, the PS5Pro is genius; as a PS5 owner currently, Sony have already benefitted from me as a consumer, but how can they exploit me a second time? I am unlikely to buy another base PS5, but boy was my head turned when the hype picked up once the shock of the price had subsided.

Got mine pre ordered and already have my games queued up that i want to experience on Pro.

I mean the Pro was an open secret since 2021 with leaks from reliable sources and the chip and features have been known for a long time and were accurate.

Hey Einhander, I think you are right and there will be a portion of fans who jump into this generation with the Pro.

However, I reckon Sony will have plenty of data showing the amount of active PS accounts that transitioned from PS4 to PS4 Pro previously and this will have fed into their decision to push for a PS5 Pro. I think Sony recognise there is an identifiable and fairly substantial section of their consumer base who could be considered as enthusiasts who will jump at the chance to buy a new console.

It's interesting to think that console life cycles were usually very short until the PS3/360 era and folk assumed the next console would come along every 4 to 5 years.

For my part, I use my PS5 several hours every day, I game a lot and also consume streaming media using PS5, so even at 700 quid, the PRO offers good value for money to me if I get 3 or 4 years out of it.

But who is paying $800 for a disc Pro as their first PS5 when they weren't that interested enough in PlayStation to get one in the 4 years after release.
