Alan Wake 2 with ray-tracing will run at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 Pro

Time to temper expectations when it comes to the PS5 Pro's ray tracing, especially when it comes to games that can bring an RTX 4090 to its knees.

not really a surprise, I'm excited to try the Lake House DLC on the Pro when it arrives.

Tacoboto208d ago

I'm not sure of the need for a dedicated post on this. It's been stated already in any of the stories referencing PS5 Pro titles in bulk and how they use the system. This game was one of the first talked about specifically with an 864p internal resolution for its 4k upscaled performance mode.

The game is gorgeous and is one of the heavier titles out there, while maintaining a slower gameplay style. No need to "temper expectations" or however they want to frame 30fps sticking around on the Pro. If 30fps still exists, it'll be better than on a system with lesser power.

Profchaos207d ago

Most articles on this site lately are like that two camps arguing over something will post pro their side articles all day long so we end up drowning in articles about the same thing over and over

GamerRN207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Honestly, all I need is Ray tracing and 40fps. That's my sweet spot. Been playing Avatar on PS5 at 40fps and it's great.

Ratchet and clank also looks great at 40

TheColbertinator208d ago

700 smackers for a half measured console is a great insult. Sony must be humbled and put in their place.

ZycoFox208d ago

Nvidia have much better RT, upscaling with DLSS, and AI performance vs AMD at the moment. So if the game is demanding you will need one of their upper tier cards to get good performance anyway if you want to use RT.

My main issue with the Pro is that it's using an outdated CPU but with decent mid level AMD graphics, unbalanced.

Einhander1972208d ago (Edited 208d ago )

You keep bringing up this CPU thing, you repeatedly argued with me when I said the PS5 Pro would play "graphics" modes at 60 FPS, yet this game and many others play the previous 30 FPS modes at 60 fps and with graphical enhancements and with higher resolutions for many of the games.

And this game had zero ray tracing on any consoles, on PS5 Pro it now has full high res ray tracing support and not 1/4 res limited to reflections like most games that have RT on base PS5.

The fact of the matter is the PS5 Pro has lived up to it's expectations, it's doing "graphics modes" at 60 fps (with enhancements including much better looking textures from PSSR) and it's doing real ray tracing.

Neonridr208d ago

@Einhander1972 - "it's doing graphics modes at 60fps"

Except Alan Wake 2 of course

FinalFantasyFanatic207d ago

I still think they never should have bothered with the PS5 Pro this gen, some games should also probably not go as heavy on the RT since it's not AMD's strong point. Although, their next gen GPUs will supposedly square up better to Nvidia lineup (or at least the 40 series).

Einhander1972207d ago

FinalFantasyFanatic

PS5 Pro uses AMD's "next gen" RDNA 4 RT...

Michiel1989207d ago

ps5pro has lived up to its expectations? its been announced for a week and we seen a couple games for it, in their showcase they showed higher fidelity leaves and backgrounds, it hasn't lived up to anything yet.

TheKingKratos207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Ein

Stop lying... It's not doing anything graphically better than Ps5 in Quality mode other than the frame rate in some games "target" 60fps

It's usually the same graphics with added Ray Tracing and Fps and that's it and the fact that is for you to notice anything in blades or grass you need to magnify the pics side to side and slow it to snail speed to notice a hair on the chest or some more grass there ... The console is absolutely miserable and worthless

The only game you guys are making out to be your champion in graphics in performance mode is a badly optimized game that develops didn't bother to even add FSR to it on ps5 (FF7Rebirth) and in Quality mode they still look pretty much the same still.

You can justify your 700$ dollars marginally stronger machine all you like but it's still little to no difference and you need developers or DF to point you to where the graphics in the distance might look better

Rimeskeem207d ago

A 4090, a card that costs $1600... can't play the game at 4k, 30fps, with ray-tracing without DLSS.

I'm honestly insulted by your lack of common sense.

207d ago
Vits207d ago

Sure, but can you tell me how well the 4090 can run the game at 900p? That’s the actual resolution the game will run on the PS5 Pro in performance mode, before the upscale. Also, while you’re at it, could you enlighten us about the graphics settings it will be using? We know that AW2 currently runs on PC at a level equivalent to low settings on consoles.

It’s easy to invoke common sense while applying double standards. Now try with actual facts.

Einhander1972207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Vits

DLSS is upscaling...

The base resolution for what Rimeskeem is talking about is only 1080p then upscaled through DLSS to 4k, and it needs frame gen.

People need to stop talking about base resolution, it's irrelevant with modern AI upscaling.

Look at FF7R, with PSSR the image quality looks BETTER than native resolution and as we get more side by side comparisons you'll see the same for other PSSR enabled games.

207d ago
deadfrag207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Sorry to tell you the 4090 with DLSS can play at 4K@60+FPS with RT max.

So far 32 people think sony is on the right track with raising console prices, raising controller prices, raising the price of a game before the pro update, not having a road map, not focusing on 1st party games, leaving psvr 2 support to pc, charging $700 for the pro.

pwnmaster3000207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

I don’t get how people don’t understand this yet. Sony is done doing the whole announce a game 2018 but release it 2020-2021. Look at Astro and ghost. I’m pretty sure that’s their new model now.
You don’t like it blame your fellow gamers for bitching to much last gen they announce games to early.
And I honestly don’t get the pro issue.

If you can’t afford it then don’t buy it.
Nothing wrong with keeping your base model

I swear westerners have the dumbest problems in the world lol.
Complaining about the dumbest thing.

I honestly don’t get the mind set of people want them to work harder, produce some of the best graphics and gameplay, make everything really cheap so they can afford it, and repeat.
Sorry bro look around the world, everything is getting more expensive. Sometimes is not greed and they actually need to make money to:
1. Pay their workers
2. Make some money to keep investing.

InUrFoxHole207d ago

@pwn
1. They should have a road map. I'm not asking for 5yrs but if you want me to drop $500 on a console I need at least 2yrs out.
2. $700 price tag is stupid. I'm fortunate enough to not have to worry about stuff like that but I do consider other gamers. The issue is have is neither sony or ms have leveraged the full power of these consoles but a mid gen is warranted? I certainly don't think so. I think that time and $ could've been spent better.
3. As for westerns having the dumbest problems. While you may be used to swallowing what ever is given to you we don't simply lay down and say... ok that's good enough, thanks. While I agree there is a limit to this i think it's fair to ask for more the same way a company asked for more $. Don't forget you're only a consumer. Stop playing the team sony/ms game.
4. No shit this is a business. Of course companies are gonna ask for more $ but when you can't even take full advantage of the current hardware why should I feel the want for a $700 console you won't fully use?
5. What do you think about them raising the prices before the pro upgrade drops
6. Ty for the convo

jwillj2k4207d ago

How do you play this game now? Do you even play this game??? 🤣

Rainbowcookie207d ago

The equivalent of do you even lift bro ? 😅

Kakashi Hatake207d ago

Just look over the fact that a 700 dollar PC would give less performance, huh? A "full measured" console would've been over a thousand dollars, then you'd still be complaining.

Tapani207d ago

I think the PS5 Pro is good for what it is. However, I knew it would be around 7800XT level performance with slightly faster RT from RDNA4 architecture, so I made a decision early on to get the 4090 and 5800X3D to simply have at least double the performance of the upcoming PS5 Pro, because it was only ever able to do 30fps RT on an AMD system in the most demanding titles. For that the 4090 can easily do 60fps, and most of the time 70-100fps which is fantastic with a Gsync display.

ocelot07206d ago

That's crazy to me. Like good on you for going with a high end system. But why the 5800x3d? Great CPU yes but it's on a end of life platform and slow ddr4 ram?

Even at 4k resolution I believe there will be a bit of a bottleneck for that 4090. With plenty of bottleneck for 1440p and horrible bottleneck at 1080p.

If you are spending what $1800 on the GPU. Then something like $450 for the 5800x3d. When a AM5 7900x3d cost the same price. More cores as well. Not as good as say the 7800x3d but still better than the 5800x3d. Plus the added benifit of DDR5 RAM and future upgrades paths on the same motherboard?

RupeeHoarder207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

Imagine nitpicking a box that's $699 playing one of the most demanding games out with full ray tracing, highest graphical settings at 30fps? You guys are hysterical on this site writing this flub then sitting down and playing your 30fps versions that look half as good. *shrug*. The Pro is playing all current fidelity mode console games at 60fps. They are adding MORE graphic intensive features on top of the standard console fidelity mode and it's still 30fps. Seems like a win. This game is brutal for most PC's unless you have a $2000 build

TheKingKratos207d ago

"highest graphical settings"

Can you back that up ?!

Pyrofire95206d ago

I doubt HIGHEST but only cause the game can scale so high. Nevertheless, higher RT settings. The game at lowest settings already uses some RT in the first place.

207d ago
Tedakin206d ago

Mark Cerny literally said the entire point of the PS5 Pro was to play games in high quality modes at 60fps. And already it's failing at that, and it's not even out yet.

Shane Kim206d ago

He said close to. Rewatch the video.

TheKingKratos206d ago

If i recall right he said that it marry the Quality mode with Performance mode
Which means adding the same graphics settings with 60fps and as you said it fail at doing so

It's now back again to two modes just like the OG and "targeting" 60fps instead of 4K60FPS

Lexreborn2207d ago

Not surprising, AW2 on my 3080 with 64gb could even handle raytracing without tanking the performance. I didn’t imaging the pro being much better so as long as it’s locked I’m sure ppl will enjoy it

Shiore2u207d ago

"3080 with 64gb"
Your 3080 WITH 64GB or 64GB of RAM, cause there's no 3080 with 64GB of VRAM. I don't even know why you're mentioning 64GB of RAM if that is the case, that's overkill for a majority of things, especially a game which isn't going to use even remotely that much. If you're discussing performance then mention your CPU which along with the GPU is going to be doing the majority of the heavy lifting.

Lexreborn2207d ago

I was speed typing, but yes I was meaning 64gb of ram. And my processor is a 12 gen i9 so yeah it’s a super beefy machine that couldn’t handle everything with ray tracing on.

That being said I wouldn’t expect the pro at all to do what my desktop couldn’t

Amplitude207d ago (Edited 207d ago )

A 3080 can totally handle Alan Wake 2 with RT. Just slap DLSS on Quality mode if you're at 1440p or Performance mode if you're at 4K. It'll look way better than native without RT and will run totally fine. Native res is such a silly use of resources that could be put to actual good use lol

Maybe use the Digital Foundry Optimized Settings. I think i remember the 3080 being the card he used for that

Lexreborn2207d ago

I’ve already beat the game at the settings I preferred. I played it around the time it came out and won’t be going back until the dlcs are all released.

I’ve done plenty with dlss for quality and performance mode. The game always tanked with Ray tracing on regardless. And it really wasn’t worth it for what the game was doing anyways.

DustMan205d ago

If you mod Frame Gen in It's even you can run this on high with a 3080 & raytracing @ over 60fps. I've done it. Gets very, very good performance at 1440p with DLSS quality & AMD Frame Gen on. It's a pain to install on the Epic store version, but on steam it's simple as dropping a couple files into the install directory.

Remedy Talks Going Over Budget on Alan Wake 2

Remedy says there's always a big challenge trying to match creative ambition with realistic budgets, and how many units you can sell.

TheColbertinator31d ago

I wish they had released a Steam version on launch. I feel that should have been part of their focus right away from announcing the game.

LucasRuinedChildhood31d ago

They definitely wanted to but Epic published the game.

REDGUM31d ago

Would have made up alot of ground had they have released a physical version at the same time as the digital release.
I think thats where it bit them in the bum to be honest.

IAMRealHooman30d ago

honest question, have they broken even yet?

senorfartcushion30d ago

Weren't they whining over not breaking even a few weeks ago? No all-of-a-sudden they're talking about overspending on the budget?

Should have been a physical release as well at launch. That would have changed the numbers. Hopefully they and others learn from this digital is great but so many out there like physical too.

Yup. I'd like to know how many physical copies it sold. I still haven't bought it yet, but I plan to.

jznrpg31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

I bought it right away but I’m sure it recieved less sales than it would have. I the end I’d rather wait to have dlc and game on disc, but you never know if that’s going to happen or not.

Jingsing70d ago

Probably would have sold a lot more had it been available physically at launch. I feel like Remedy's greed will eventually close them down.

toxic-inferno70d ago

I'm not sure it's about greed. I am one of the fans who waited until the physical version was released (I've only just played it, as a matter of fact).

Remedy's games are a hard sell in most regards. The nature of the story appeals to a smaller group of people than the average game with it's level of ambition. As a result, and to ensure they can release the game they want to make, they are required to partner with companies that impose restrictions and make decisions like seen in this case.

Remedy is not complaining that it has only just become profitable. They are used to this. I think it has been said that Alan Wake II is the game of theirs that has turned a profit quickest.

Out of all the developers out there, I think they are possibly one of the least greedy. Many other developers would choose to make decisions that increase their financial takings - Remedy seems to make decisions that allow them to release the game they want to release, without sacrificing the vision that they have.

Rainbowcookie46d ago

I agree very Niche games , awesome but pretty niche. I do applaud them to sticking too their vision instead of buckling to the crappy spirit of the age.

Tacoboto69d ago

Remedy's greed, talk about not knowing what you're talking about.

I'm guessing everyone forgot that Epic published and funded this game, and put the terms on its distribution...

RiseNShine70d ago

It took too many wrong decisions like EGS exclusivity and no physical edition.

70d ago
Scissorman70d ago

I'm glad this finally broke 2 million units sold, but Silent Hill 2 hit that goal in far less time and on fewer consoles. Remedy really needs to rethink putting its games on EGS.

Kassanova0770d ago

Good to hear. Next time do a Physical release day 1.
