Will PS5 Pro Run GTA 6 at 4K60? Probably Not, Say the Experts

Pointless trying to convince the console fans that it won't, common sense says otherwise, they seem to think a tiny overclock will make the CPU limitations disappear.

Zen 2 was an OK (not the best) CPU for gaming in 2019, not so much these days, it's passable depending on your performance expectations.

The fact of the matter is, nobody in here, including IGN and DF, have any idea what the CPU requirements of the GTA6 engine are going to be, it's all speculation based on what GTA5 (hardly a well-optimized game) required. They are rebuilding the engine from the ground up, and for all we know they could have offloaded certain routines that were once ran on the CPU onto the GPU, could be using AI frame generation, or a number of other optimizations that would prevent it from being CPU-bound. All we can do is wait and see.

Upscaling isn't going to change that. GTA has always been one of the most CPU-heavy games. If the base PS5 is running it at 30fps, the PS5 Pro which uses the same CPU isn't going to somehow double the framerate. GPU-heavy games can absolutely see framerate increases though, which is what they showcased during the presentation.

Can these experts tell us what GTA6 is like as a game? Probably not since they don't have it, so how would they know how unavailable software runs on unavailable hardware?

Will developers actually take the time (or be afforded the time) to even come close to taking advantage of what a PS5 Pro can do? Absolutely not. They haven't even gotten everything out of the PS5 yet, which makes the existence of a Pro model laughable when you think about it.

Knowing Rockstar, they'll use that pitch for the PS6 release to entice gamers to double dip. I can see them doing 4K60 for RDR2 for the PS5 Pro.

They never released a ps4 pro update. And last gen Xbox had a mid gen upgrade with the x. This gen it’s just Sony and I’ll be very very surprised if they sell anywhere nears as muc 5pros as they did 4pros, the market for the ps5 upgrades will be so small it’ll only ever be first party games and a hand full of others that ever utilise it.

PS4 Pro released after GTA V's port. This time the hardware releases before the game. Rockstar have had knowledge of the 5 Pro for a minimum of 12 months but likely 20 months, possibly more. They have had time to plan and prepare for it. There are no excuses if they don't support it. There's also the option of a 40 FPS mode which doesn't seem far-fetched.

Mostly likely an unlocked VRR framerate mode which bounces between 30 - 70 FPS depending on what's happening at any given moment. There's also the option of a 40 FPS mode.

One game I didn't except to tbh. I'm guessing it's CPU based. If not, I'd be more than happy with 1440/60. A 40 fps mode would be a blessing though, surely that's possible

Congratulations to digital foundry for damaging the PlayStation Pro with an unfounded statement they had to later walk back stating that if any console has a 60 fps mode then so will PS5 Pro. What happened to sliders guys?

I predict Richard's statement won't age well. And basing GTA 6's fps off versions based on previous generations of consoles that didn't support 60 fps for nearly any game to a console where nearly every game has a graphics and a 60 fps mode is not a good comparison. Both the PS5/SX versions of RDR2 and GTA 5 are 60 fps so clearly Rockstar knows what the consumers expect.

for a game to have a 60fps mode... that is usually the first place they start. The idea of upping the graphics fidelity is the trade off by reducing the fps and increasing the fidelity. in the case of Rockstar, they never build their games to target performance first, they go for quality. Like BMW, that game's performance mode is not a real performance mode but instead is 30fps internally and then frame gen doubled to 60 (and not very well delivered). you really think GTA6 is going to go that route? I can see maybe a 40fps mode, but they are wanting to have it look the best it possible can first and foremost, performance (anything above 30fps) will take a back seat just like it did with RDR2.

The game will have graphics and performance modes just like the vast majority of other AAA and AA games this generation.

That's not even a good description of frame gen. Frame gen is still creating new frames just generated based on the previous frame and while it does have some latency compared to native FPS it sill offers better performance than the 30 fps source.

And I assume you don't understand what upscaling like PSSR, DLSS and FSR are by that comment. because what that is, is taking a lower resolution image and using an algorithm to fill in the missing pixels from a higher resolution. Frame gen is an entirely different form of post processing that can be used along side other forms of upscaling.

Einhander, you can't frame gen 30 to 60. Well you *can* but It looks absolutely atrocious and is pretty much unplayable. No, a 30 to 60 frame gen upscale does not offer better performance than a 30fps lock. It is much, much, much worse and 100% of people would pick the 30fps lock over that. Go look at any footage of a 30 to 60 real time conversion with DLSS3 and tell me that's playable.

PSSR (and DLSS2) hardware machine learning based upscaling can help alleviate pressure from the GPU, but that really isn't the concern here. If Rockstar can overcome the console's pretty mid spec CPUs to run what's likely to be the most CPU-intensive game ever released [an assumption we all make based on the trailer and GTA5] and then get it up to 60fps, then you are correct it will run at 60fps.

If anybody can, it's Rockstar - but it likely simply isn't possible without destroying the vision and goals of a GTA game. And on top of that, they make bank when they rerelease games in the future at 60fps, cause we'll all rebuy the thing.

All signs point to GTA6 being a 30fps game on all consoles.

Frame gen from 30 to 60 fps will absolutely NOT provide better performance. Will it look “smoother” in motion and camera pans? Yes.

But taking the already low input lag of 30fps and adding all the latency from frame gen (which is going to be more pronounced at a base 30fps) just makes for a horrible playing experience.

The whole point of 60fps is for things to be fluid and snappy.

And thats leaving aside that with the higher frame persistence time of a base 30fps. All the artifacts and problems of the generated frames because way more noticeable.

There is a reason both Nvidia and AMD are extremely clear that it should not be used with base framerates below 60.
