Black Myth: Wukong Cost $70 Million And Over 6 Years of Development

Black Myth: Wukong was far from the industry's biggest AAA production, but achieved astounding results in just $70 million.

The fact that this game costed less to make in less time than Concord's budget and development time respectively shows a pretty funny and interesting insight.

Obscure_Observer261d ago

It also costed almost 5x less to produce in a direct comparison with Spider-Man 2.

Daver261d ago

Not sure but salary in China might not be the same as in California.

outsider1624261d ago

Cheap labour my friend, cheap labour.

neutralgamer1992261d ago

Obscure

Those licenses from Disney aren’t cheap. That’s why insomniac and Sony spent that amount of money. Same for UBI and starwars. These IP’s cost a lot of money to work on

On topic:

There seems to be some misunderstanding about Concord’s development budget. The claim that it reached $200 million is an overestimation. In the early stages of pre-production, game development typically involves a smaller team of about 15-20 people. The team size only increases during full production, which lasts 3-4 years.

It’s important to note that not all team members are full-time developers throughout the entire project. A lot of the work is done by independent contractors hired for specific tasks. Once their work is complete, they move on, leaving a core team of permanent employees who are on salary with Sony. This setup means the actual cost is often much lower than what some assume when multiplying the number of developers by the duration of development.

Hofstaderman261d ago

Even so its still on the same platform as Spiderman 2. Double win for PS5 owners.

thorstein261d ago (Edited 261d ago )

If you believe in production costs for movies or video games, venmo me 3,000 dollars and I'll give you a sneak peek at the XBOX X (their next console.)

Production costs are made up. See Hollywood Accounting. Or see the budget of Godzilla Minus One (less that 15 million) to see what movies really cost.

Games are no different.

The reason we see the cost on this is because there would be no tax write off for the Chinese company.

EternalTitan260d ago

Quality of labor in California is also poor.

Apparently there more talk about concord now then it did before its release. Yall definitely should get over it move before it get imprinted in y'all brains.

neutralgamer1992261d ago (Edited 261d ago )

I am not surprised that concord failed yet wukong generated 800 million at launch because it’s clear that the ‘games as a service’ model is becoming a bubble that’s likely to burst sooner rather than later. Developers, especially big ones like Sony, are investing heavily in this approach, which seems absurd when their strength has always been in narrative-driven games with high production values. These types of games might sell fewer copies compared to ongoing service-based titles, but they still perform remarkably well. For example, days gone a game considered by many to be a ‘failure’ still managed to sell 7.5 to 8 million copies—a number many publishers and developers would love to achieve. If that’s the bar for failure, it shows just how skewed expectations have become. The industry’s obsession with constant monetization and live services may not be sustainable in the long run, especially when traditional, story-rich games continue to hold strong value and appeal to dedicated fans

Gamingsince1981261d ago

Astro bot should give Sony a clue with the scores it's getting, no one asked for or wants this GAAS crap and the faster it dies off the better imo.

ChasterMies261d ago

“it’s clear that the ‘games as a service’ model is becoming a bubble that’s likely to burst sooner rather than later”

Games as a service has been around since at least 1997 with “Ultimate Online”. Safe to say that games as a service is here to stay, and publishers will keep fighting for player’s attention and dollars.

neutralgamer1992261d ago

Yes your u are right but the monetization and this level of greed wasn’t present in 1997 or even 2007. Very recently have we started to see aggressive monetization

Ultimate teams in NFL, FIFA and NBA generate billions. This wasn’t the case 15 years ago. So you can’t compare what existed in 1997 to 2024 where suits are running companies simply pushing for as much profit as possible

Knightofelemia261d ago

Concord failed because it entered a market where that type of game style is over saturated. Games either make it or crash hard and Concord crashed hard.

FinalFantasyFanatic261d ago

I'm shocked it only cost $70 mil, I was expecting almost double that figure.

CrimsonWing69261d ago

One of the most beautiful games I’ve played this year. The story bits really hit me. They did an exceptional job that puts games with a way larger budget to shame.

druwepro261d ago

all that for a glorified tech demo with style over substance
i hope their next game will be better

The Physical Release Of Black Myth: Wukong Performed So Well It Saved Businesses, Says Publisher

As more and more games go digital-only, Black Myth: Wukong's physical publisher says it performed so well that it saved some businesses.

Good to see physical still doing well!

dantesparda19d ago

So fix the performance on PS5/Pro. With up all that ghosting and dithering, improve the performance!

FPSRUSSIA19d ago

it would of sold even more Physical if it released day one but still Great News.

Yi-Long19d ago

The industry wants to push the narrative that physical is on its way out and gamers prefer digital. Fact is that many gamers simply have less and less options to buy physical, so they’re stuck with either digital, or nothing.

Many gamers still prefer physical, especially for SP games. Games without ‘always online’ or other kinds of anti-consumer DRM.

I hope they’ll release a complete edition (physical) for Wukong once the announced DLC comes out.

OptimusDK19d ago

I totally get it, but dont know if i really matters as most games now do not hold the actual game, or at least a very early version without day one patches.

They are often just a licence to download the actual game. Unfortunately it is not like in the old days, if you just had the game you can play the game no matter what.

Nyxus19d ago

That goes for some games but there are still plenty for which this isn't the case: https://www.doesitplay.org/

jznrpg19d ago

Most games are on disc.

gold_drake19d ago

yeh i hate it too, if they'd give us actual numbers on how much it costs to print themz id be more inclined to beliebe it, but otherwise, nah no way.

kayoss19d ago

I try to buy physical PS5 games when possible. Physical add an extra cost to the developers. However, the fact that digital cost the same as a physical version of the game makes no sense to me. The only games i will buy digital are Nintendo Switch games, those cartridges are small and i lost/misplaced a few already.

senorfartcushion19d ago

Every game that sells well "saves businesses" nowadays - based on how many studios suffer layoffs due to a game not skyrocketing to success, that is.

Popsicle19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

I waited for the physical release to purchase this. If it didn’t get a physical release I had already made up my mind that I was fine skipping it.

I know I am fighting a losing battle because an all digital future is inevitable, but I only purchase physical and will continue doing so.

kayoss19d ago

You will be surprised. Games are getting bigger in size and we all know that console dont provide you with that much hard drive space. I know you can just delete the game from your harddrive to save space and re-install whenever, but me having a physical insure that i can install anytime i want, even if they they take the game off their digital stores.

ravens5218d ago (Edited 18d ago )

Exactly. I do the same. Only digital games I have are from ps+, and I don't consider those owned. As soon as I don't renew, those games are inaccessible.

"it’s a story that I’m sure won’t go away any time soon"
It might if you'd let it

danno_omen56d ago

We don’t control who suddenly decides to bring it up in interviews lol

lukasmain56d ago

It's pure speculation on behalf of the author of this opinion piece and it hold no weight at all.

InUrFoxHole55d ago

@lukasmain
Im curious how you can make that comment when he specifically mentions Blackmyth? No weight at all? Either...
A. You can't read
B. You're letting blind loyalty take point
C. You just didn't read it
D. You're trolling

pwnmaster300056d ago

There really wasn’t no suggestion.
Just pure speculation as usual.

Lightning7755d ago

It's in the interview. He said it.

lukasmain55d ago

He never suggested a special exclusivity deal. Far from it. The author is just speculating.

Lightning7755d ago (Edited 55d ago )

@Main I quoted Rosenberg at the bottom he said it himself on the interview that him and guys go out and find hidden gems. This interview wouldn't mean much but Black Myth was supposed to release simultaneously along with the Xbox version unfortunately, it didn't. Got taken off and GS said it was the S. MS said there was a deal in place. If he's going out and finding niche or "hidden gems" BMW should of released only on PS5 since its considered a hidden gem that could only be played on PS console just like the rest of the other games he mentioned. The game was announced awhile ago as a multiplat. The S of late has been holding its own with third party and 1st party games. It's also clear that the S did have issues for awhile also and maybe GS really can't optimize for the console. I'm just exploring every possibility.

Hmm, I dunno at the end of the day. The S has been performing well optimization wise lately. I dunno it's hard to tell anymore what's, what.

-Foxtrot56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

There is no way in high hell Sony would pay money for this, something so successful and not advertise it as an exclusive console game. There's just no way, they've done it for everything else, why would they not do it for this.

It's people who can't let a story go, there's no deal, they just probably supported a new Chinese studio with their China Hero Project and give them tools to help develop on their console. If Microsoft came along and offered them the same tools early on for their console I'm sure Sony wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Sony took a chance on a new studio early on and they benefitted from it, that's their reward.

And we would’ve getaway with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids games.
Congrats to NT on their 11 nominations I wish them good luck 👍👍

Beautiful game, love the series, and the character!

Well crafter and well done.

Toecutter0080d ago

Good. The game is unique, heartfelt, and beautiful. Yes, the mechanics are rather simplistic. But the teams dedication to storytelling is on full display. It's definitely not for everyone, but it won't disappoint those who appreciate video games that push the boundaries of the medium.

Alos8880d ago

More like pushes the boundary of how short a game can be while still charging fifty quid

InUrFoxHole80d ago

Love the game. Beautiful looking, game play was solid and it didn't over stay it's welcome.

PrinceOfAnger80d ago

Good game with the best graphics and animation I've seen this gen. They need to focus more on the gameplay though if there is HB3.
