Borderlands 4 head admits defeat after wishing death of Steam

Gearbox Studios lead Randy Pitchford has admitted defeat against Valve’s PC gaming storefront Steam. Five years after claiming the store was in death throes, the Borderlands 4 head has finally accepted his mistake.

I guess that EPIC check wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.

DaCajun282d ago

I don't understand him or others who wish for Steam to crash and burn. Yes they charge 30% but so does Sony on playstation, Microsoft on Xbox and pretty much most other gaming platforms. Yes Epic does charge less but their storefront is garbage and I would bet money if they were top dog they would jack their fees up just like every for-profit company is and had been doing forever. Such ignorance to believe Epic was only doing it for the devs and players. It will always be about the greed for money and power.

100% agree with everything you've said. All they were trying to do was strong-arm themselves to the storefront leader and quickly.

Steam is way too good on the customer to die off.

neutralgamer1992282d ago

As a new PC gamer steam is awesome. User friendly, great customer service and all
In one store

TheColbertinator282d ago

Yes precisely. Best of all Valve didn't buy its way out of its problems with Steam. It made a service that people actually want and supports developers and communities fairly. Discounts are commonplace and indie support is strong.

The other PC storefront owners like Ubisoft, Microsoft, EA and Epic should take notes.

Wish they could put some work into the phone app and Big Picture Mode.

DustMan281d ago

I've been a steam user since it's inception with Half-Life 2. The platform has never done me wrong. Yet, to be fair. Epic, and GOG have been consumer friendly as well. I never had trouble getting refunds through any of the three I mentioned.

U-Play and Origin/ea app whatever they are using now are the worst.

anast282d ago (Edited 282d ago )

I heard about this guy.

TyrantStarmer282d ago

Steam's been around since just before Half Life 2. And was installed on tons of new PCs when that great game came out.

Snookies12282d ago

Hah, I thought it was a bit before that. But, I guess I've been on Steam since it basically launched considering I have the "20 years of service" medal. Pretty cool I still have my account from Steam's first year.

CantThinkOfAUsername281d ago

Yeah, and people hated it so much just like console hardcore fans hating on digital today. Its adoption really took off in 2007.

I sure hope so. It seemed like forever ago since its announcement.

KiRBY30002d ago

IO is also the publisher for MindsEye so it could be about that game.

i'd much prefer it to be about their Bond project though. love what they've done with hitman and im hyped to see what they can do with the Bond franchise.

Borderlands 4 CEO Apologizes for "Real Fans" Comment, Fans Don't Buy it

Randy: "I am sorry there was a misunderstanding. The absolute sincere truth is that I don’t want anyone to pay any more than they should or are comfortable with and I always work with the intent and hope that a customer always feels they got the better end of the deal no matter what they pay. The actual context was that a guy replied to a post about Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2 was warning me that if the price ends up being $80, the game will fail. What I was trying to do was explain that it wasn’t my call but that if a $10 price increase does happen (since that’s obviously where the industry is going), it will be okay and that Borderlands 4 will be okay because it’s a great game and there are a lot of fans who will see the value and want it."

*clears throat*

I think you mean "real fans don't buy it"

-Foxtrot5d ago

It will sell well because it’s Borderlands, but I’m not getting it Day 1 now. I’ll happily wait and buy something else.

He just had to open his mouth, I don’t know why they don’t see how much of a PR disaster he is.

Goodguy015d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Makes me wonder why people like this lead games and franchises that are beloved. Dude just needs to shut up and never speak their opinions on social media lol. Just chill and enjoy your life with the 7 figure salary you get bud.

Tacoboto4d ago

There's nothing to buy because there's no apology here except for how WE "misunderstood" what he so clearly typed out.

CrimsonWing693d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Yea like we’re just dumb consumers that don’t understand PR damage control. Hey Randy, if you cared about the fans you’d fight against this stupid price hike… oh wait…
