Black Myth: Wukong - PS5 Tech Review - Excellent Visuals, But Too Many Tech Problems

Digital Foundry - We loved to see the visual ambition in the PC version of Black Myth: Wukong, but we had concerns about the PS5 version based on the lack of review code and a teaser clip that exhibited obvious issues. Oliver Mackenzie and Alex Battaglia check out the console code, dissect the Quality, Balance and Performance mode, analyse frame-rates and compare to the high-end PC experience.

--Onilink--248d ago

So many issues… I wasnt expecting a masterpiece on console but also wasnt expecting such a poor port either

Quality mode not capping at 30
Balanced mode neither capping at 40 nor being over 48 to trigger VRR
The most misleading “Performance Mode” ever, since its actually just 30fps using FSR Frame Gen to get to 60 (and therefore having MORE latency/input lag than the actual 30fps mode)

Over sharpened and with a ton or artifacts in the performance mode.
Extra blurry in balanced mode (plus the strange ultra low quality textures for some stuff)

VersusDMC248d ago

Having just finished chapter 1 i prefer this performance mode over elden ring on PS5 (native not the ps4 version on the PS5) and FFXVI outside of combat.

I can't tell if the imput lag is bad as i guess i got accustomed to it as i did stellar blade that apparently had bad imput lag as well.

It is fine to me as a console only player who always plays performance mode.

Obscure_Observer248d ago

"So many issues… I wasnt expecting a masterpiece on console but also wasnt expecting such a poor port either"

When I said this game would not deliver anything near Native 4K/30fps for Quality or Native 1440p/60fps for Performance people got mad at me. And here we are.

That´s why they were hiding the PS5 version.

Even I wasn´t expecting it to be such POS with so many issues. Not a single mode works properly.

I´m glad the Xbox version got delayed. No Xbox Series S to blame for this sh!t and we´ll probably get a better optimized and polished game in the future.

outsider1624247d ago

What do you mean no xbox s to blame for this? Didn't they say the game made for x should also be made for the S. Seeing as its giving a hard time on ps5, no wonder they delayed the xbox version.

Obscure_Observer247d ago

@outsider1624

"What do you mean no xbox s to blame for this?"

Ignorant gamers used to sh!t on Hellblade II because it runs at 30fps on the Series X like the PS5 could do better.

Now they´re facing reality with this game which is not a half UE5 feature rich game as Hellblade II and still runs at 30fps!

The S is responsible for the Series X delay? Absolutely! But that potato console has nothing to do with BMW running like sh!t on PS5. We heard that Sony engineers where helping optimized this game for the PS5 and the game were well optimized and blah blah.

Now the truth is out and everyone who paid full price for this crap, has a buggy, blurry mess with poor performance.

darthv72248d ago

ooof.... needs a bit more time in the oven. I can only imagine how it will be on the Series S. The X may be on par with the 5.... but that S is surely going to be stuck in its version of quality mode only.

gammaray13248d ago

this is a load of bullshit, im up to the third area and have had zero problems and the frame rate is perfect

GamingSinceForever248d ago

I agree. I’ve been playing on the PS Portal and it seems to work just fine for me as well.

Angyobangyo248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

I think I'll trust DF over some random person in the comment section. Why do people get so defensive when a game on PS gets told there are technical issues?

Huey_My_D_Long248d ago

Because dumb people think if they dont have a problem then other people are lying about technical issues.

247d ago
Flewid638247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

The performance drops are clearly in the video. Why would they lie?

The technical issues that most enthusiasts look for are things most casuals dont care about. They are obviously there. You just dont care about them....and thats okay.

I’ll tell you what, when I see reviews bashing performances and giving like 5s out of 10s for it, I’m going to come back to the Black Myth reviews and ask what it did that made it get away with it.

anast248d ago

It's blanking out on the PC. I heard the PS5 is doing relatively well compared.

"it’s a story that I’m sure won’t go away any time soon"
It might if you'd let it

danno_omen28d ago

We don’t control who suddenly decides to bring it up in interviews lol

lukasmain28d ago

It's pure speculation on behalf of the author of this opinion piece and it hold no weight at all.

InUrFoxHole27d ago

@lukasmain
Im curious how you can make that comment when he specifically mentions Blackmyth? No weight at all? Either...
A. You can't read
B. You're letting blind loyalty take point
C. You just didn't read it
D. You're trolling

pwnmaster300028d ago

There really wasn’t no suggestion.
Just pure speculation as usual.

Lightning7727d ago

It's in the interview. He said it.

lukasmain27d ago

He never suggested a special exclusivity deal. Far from it. The author is just speculating.

Lightning7727d ago (Edited 27d ago )

@Main I quoted Rosenberg at the bottom he said it himself on the interview that him and guys go out and find hidden gems. This interview wouldn't mean much but Black Myth was supposed to release simultaneously along with the Xbox version unfortunately, it didn't. Got taken off and GS said it was the S. MS said there was a deal in place. If he's going out and finding niche or "hidden gems" BMW should of released only on PS5 since its considered a hidden gem that could only be played on PS console just like the rest of the other games he mentioned. The game was announced awhile ago as a multiplat. The S of late has been holding its own with third party and 1st party games. It's also clear that the S did have issues for awhile also and maybe GS really can't optimize for the console. I'm just exploring every possibility.

Hmm, I dunno at the end of the day. The S has been performing well optimization wise lately. I dunno it's hard to tell anymore what's, what.

-Foxtrot28d ago (Edited 28d ago )

There is no way in high hell Sony would pay money for this, something so successful and not advertise it as an exclusive console game. There's just no way, they've done it for everything else, why would they not do it for this.

It's people who can't let a story go, there's no deal, they just probably supported a new Chinese studio with their China Hero Project and give them tools to help develop on their console. If Microsoft came along and offered them the same tools early on for their console I'm sure Sony wouldn't bat an eyelid.

Sony took a chance on a new studio early on and they benefitted from it, that's their reward.

….. for the world’s most boring game

1Victor52d ago

And we would’ve getaway with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids games.
Congrats to NT on their 11 nominations I wish them good luck 👍👍

Beautiful game, love the series, and the character!

Well crafter and well done.

Toecutter0052d ago

Good. The game is unique, heartfelt, and beautiful. Yes, the mechanics are rather simplistic. But the teams dedication to storytelling is on full display. It's definitely not for everyone, but it won't disappoint those who appreciate video games that push the boundaries of the medium.

Alos8852d ago

More like pushes the boundary of how short a game can be while still charging fifty quid

InUrFoxHole52d ago

Love the game. Beautiful looking, game play was solid and it didn't over stay it's welcome.

PrinceOfAnger52d ago

Good game with the best graphics and animation I've seen this gen. They need to focus more on the gameplay though if there is HB3.
