Do Games Need To Do A Better Job Of “Starting On Time”?

Lately it feels like a lot of games fail to grip gamers from the jump. In a world where it’s so easy to move on to the next game, that’s a problem

“How often have you heard online or from a friend oh game X gets really good, you just have to get past the first 5 hours.”

A lot, lol! If you look at trophy/cheevo stats, most games go unfinished. Do games need more 007 intros, (a big scene before the opening credits)?

One thing that's wrong with a lot of games is the overly long tutorials and handholding. Just show me the controls and start the game. I don't need to spend so much time being taught how to do everything while being fed a bunch of unfunny cringe dialogue.

Yep. You are right on. If the devs feel I need a little time to learn how to play, start me off in a smaller area with lesser enemies early on so I can learn the controls, etc. But let me just play the game. Don't force me to play drawn out tutorials. Breath of the Wild did a decent job with this.

I'm constantly put off from starting new games because I'll only have an hour to play and I don't want to spend the entire hour bogged down in crappy tutorials.

Yes. I'm frequently in a situation where I have between 45 minutes to an hour and a half to play games, and I'm always reluctant to start a new game in those situations, because I'm usually pretty sure it is going to be painfully boring tutorials for the first hour.

I thought Doom 2016 was a little overrated, but I have to give it a lot of credit for getting out of your way and just letting you start playing.

The 'Stop Killing Games' initiative is close to its final deadline

Ross Scott—also known as Accursed Farms on YouTube—has been fighting tooth and nail for almost a full year to help spearhead game preservation. Starting after it was announced that Ubisoft's The Crew would be shutting down, permanently ending support for the game, Scott launched the "Stop Killing Games" initiative.

That makes a twofold deadline for the Stop Killing Games initiative. Or, at least, one headed up by Scott: The UK petition, which ends July 14, and the EU Citizens' Initiative, which ends July 3.
