59.30? Didn't Sony this morning say they sold over 61m.

Nintendo also showing off impressive numbers. Not far off a million for a 7 year old console.

Generally a product mfg knows how many units they produce and sent to retail. This is often times referred to as sold to retail (aka shipped). Only the retailers know how much of that stock is sold through to customers, and they report those sales back to the mfg every quarter. That is how they get a more accurate account of the sell through of their stock.

Sony shipped out 61.7m units around the world. To which the retail 'estimates' are showing a sell through of 59.3m. That tells Sony they have roughly 2.4m units of stock in the retail channels. Knowing this helps them to increase or decrease production for the next quarter.

MS, for example, has stock at retail that isnt selling anywhere close to what Sony is selling. Which is why they reported a decline of units shipped compared to the previous. There is stock already at retail they would need to sell through first before they can produce more to ship out.

Thanks for the detailed explanation much appreciated.

I believe vgchartz is a little behind on their numbers since they are reporting stuff after it actually happens.

These can’t be right, I feel like Xbox been at 29 mil for awhile now. They should be passed 30 mil already if the past numbers are correct.

Good numbers for PS and switch tho.

Jigga69284d ago

No Xbox is actually way lower than vgchartz say it is.

MajorLazer284d ago

I doubt Xbox has even passed 25m 🤣 Take the Series S out and it'd barely scratch 5m.

I can’t help but feel the fact that games jumped $70 and they basically made this generation a generation where you could have just stick to last-gen and only missed out on a handful of current-gen exclusives, be the reason why we see this YoY drop. The industry is all kinds of f*cked, too. All these focuses on GaaS, remakes, and remasters… I dunno, the landscape has changed a lot and not for the best, in my opinion.

The Switch has been out for a while now, so the drop is expected. MS Xbox tied themselves to the S. PlayStation is still trending close to the 4, but you are correct, about half are still gaming on the 4 and the price of the console probably has made a difference for the gamers that wait for price drops, which haven't happened yet. Similar to the gamers that wait for the price of games to go down. Once the pro is released and the price drops, the numbers will go through the roof.

Wish the Switch would stop selling already. Who doesn't have one at this point. It's been almost 8 years..

The month-to-month comparison is interesting. Despite Xbox's much-hyped summer showcase in June, it failed to make a substantial impact on sales. While PlayStation 5 sales skyrocketed by nearly 220,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales lagged behind, increasing by a meager 96,000 units.

anast284d ago

It's because only paid game writers and paid influencers hyped it. Most gamers didn't think the showcase was enough to dig MS Xbox out of the series S hole that they created.

That and people talk of all the games xbox has coming this year, while PS5 apparently has nothing, when this year so the PS5 has had a vastly better release of games, even if not first party. Palworld was a big game but everyone just played that on gamepass on the xbox side, and didn't move the hardware or sub needle.

All they released themselves is Hellblade 2 which was a massive flop and little more than a fart in the wind.
