Is convenient. Yes Playstion owners love to buy physical but that’s mostly for the hardcore, the casual including myself buys digital more.
I will buy physical for some games just to build my box art collection but it’s getting more rare now a days.

JEECE282d ago

What do you mean by casual? If you mean the people who spend a lot of time on their console but only play one or two free to play games, then yes, they probably spend most of their money digitally.

But there are also a lot of casual gamers who don't visit sites like this or watch gaming YouTubers who still think of buying games as walking into GameStop or Best Buy and buying a disc. Think of your friends who don't know what Dishonored is but who were super excited about College Football 25 and you'll know what I mean.

Cacabunga281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

No Physical no buy.. i rather own my own games

JEECE281d ago

@Cacabunga

Umm okay? Not sure how that relates to my comment. My point is that there are a lot of casual gamers who also only buy physical games, except they don't even go through the thought process of "well Sony might shut down PSN next week and keep me from redownloading." They just buy discs because that's what they have always done and they don't follow the industry enough to understand that digital is even something to consider.

Petebloodyonion281d ago

"But there are also a lot of casual gamers who don't visit sites like this or watch gaming YouTubers who still think of buying games as walking into GameStop or Best Buy and buying a disc."

And how many of them bought the game used? For companies, they compile that data with the ones coming from piracy as they get $0 from the sale.

darthv72281d ago

For those who bought the original digital 5, they really have no choice.

itsmebryan282d ago

According to this article they don't love physical copies if only 20% buy them. That's pretty low.

pwnmaster3000282d ago

Like I said, it’s mostly hardcore gamers now. The casuals, which heavily outnumber the hardcore buys digital. That’s including myself on the digital. I only buy hard copies for games I really like.

JEECE281d ago

As others have noted, this tracks overall spending on software, not the physical/digital split of games that launch both physically and digitally.

shinoff2183281d ago

According to the article their taking numbers from ps plus somehow as if that's a sale

Rynxie281d ago

I online buy digital for kid games. Anything else, I buy physical.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH281d ago

I’m as hardcore as it gets and I buy all digital. The Pros outweigh the cons in my opinion.

FinalFantasyFanatic281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

I just buy whatever is cheaper, at this point, digital is often cheaper for Playstation when sales are on, except for Switch games, where sometimes the physicals are cheaper. Or if I want the Asia-English release of a game, it generally less complicated to just buy the physical game.

I still have an extensive collection of PS4 physical games.

KwietStorm_BLM281d ago (Edited 281d ago )

I haven't bought a PlayStation game on disc since PS3 went full digital. The only gamers constantly crying about no physical no buy are the internet regulars. The majority buy games digitally, just like movies and music. The numbers don't lie. But the physical only gamers will still hit disagree because they think it somehow validates their stance.

MADGameR281d ago

The fact that digital downloads are the majority of sales on PlayStation is absolutely disgusting. That means that there are too many dummies not wanting to actually own their game. And also understand this, if you find that a new game from your favorite franchise happens to be trash and you want to go back to play it again, you will have to purchase it again if you lost your account or if you want to play it on your friend's console. Obviously you haven't seen the ugly of digital games yet. You spend $70 on a game you don't actually own. The next step is you will be renting the game for $70 for a limited time if the digital morons keep that up. That's what will happen next mark my words.

cbuc1125281d ago

Well said and 100 percent agree!

Rebel_Scum281d ago

Hardcore gamers lol, turn it up mate.

Einhander1972282d ago

This is misleading.

The amount of games that release digital only increases so it is always skewed towards digital.

Sony themselves have reported their own games (Spider-Man God of War ect.) which have physical releases still sell more than half physically.

-Foxtrot282d ago

Exactly

It’s just people trying to justify an all digital future and be like “SEE GUYS. It’s more popular, you’re in the minority”

JEECE282d ago

I don't understand why it has to be a fight. I prefer digital but I want you all to keep buying physical. People constantly overlook how symbiotic we are. When physical was dominant (think PS3 gen), prices for games stayed stagnant. GameStop would seriously have a used copy of a three year old game for like $48 dollars and we were expected to see that as a good deal. Now where it's split, we get great digital sales on PSN and great disc sales at places like Best Buy. Prices drop in a way they never used to. If digital was dominant, that wouldn't happen, and it sure didn't happen when physical was dominant.

purple101282d ago

this is also disingenuous because there are counting PS SUBS and games total revenue, so 80 from digital, god this pisses me off,

"The digital sales were mostly led by network services, especially PlayStation Plus.''

if it was just games, we have seen 1st party sells more physical, some in the 70-80% range If I remember right,
ahh yes here we go https://www.reddit.com/r/PS...

shinoff2183281d ago

Even if we are the minority. Whats wrong with just letting us be

JEECE282d ago

Yep. The stats would be more useful if they would give overall digital/physical split and then the split only for the bie games that are available both physically and digitally.

shinoff2183281d ago

Been saying this as well if 200 games release physical and 1000 release digital only, hmmmm which one will have a higher percentage?

RaidenBlack282d ago

Majority of my PS library has become digital only, unfortunately.

fr0sty282d ago

I've been digital only since PS3.

andy85282d ago

Save thousands a year with the physical route myself. I'll hold off as long as possible

shinoff2183281d ago

Hell yea. So many games I've found off Amazon. I'll check psn. Sure enough it's sometimes 30 dollars or more cheaper. Got the new shin megami tensei for 35 I think. How much is it still on psn

Abnor_Mal282d ago

Since they closed the GameStop closest to me a few years ago, I’ve been buying digital.

jznrpg282d ago (Edited 282d ago )

I still go to Best Buy sometimes and Walmart on rare occasions but I do order most of my games from Amazon because I live in a rural area and during the summer I don’t go to the cities very often. I do order form others online retailers as well for more obscure games but Amazon is my main gaming retailer these days because it gets here fast and it’s convenient.

DarXyde282d ago

Not too eager to support Amazon, to be honest.

Certainly convenient, but the way the sausage is made is very ugly.

JEECE281d ago

The ones that are still open aren't very inspiring anyway. Last time I went to one was a few years ago to buy a Switch game as a gift (Mario Golf), and they didn't have it in stock (they had plenty of nonsense collectibles like Funko Pops in stock though). Their Switch game selection was pretty sad, especially considering so many people still buy physical games for it.

CrimsonWing69282d ago

I’ve pretty much been doing mostly digital this gen.

P_Bomb282d ago

Same *ducks flying tomato*. Currently playing off disc, but I just bought another digital game like an hour ago.

At the end of 2024, I made what I thought was a smart move investing £150,000 into a promising crypto opportunity. It looked legitimate, the returns were enticing, and everything seemed perfect until it wasn’t.The withdrawals stopped. The support lines went dead. My account showed a balance, but I couldn’t touch a single pound. That’s when the truth hit me: I had been scammed.I was devastated. It felt like my entire future had just collapsed. Then, someone recommended Washington Recovery Pro and that was the turning point. From the first call, their professionalism and knowledge stood out. They carefully traced the blockchain movements, gathered solid evidence, and guided me through every legal and technical step needed to fight back. It wasn’t an overnight miracle, but their dedicated work brought real results. Thanks to Washington Recovery Pro, I recovered a major portion of my lost funds. More importantly, I got back a sense of control, confidence, and peace of mind.I can’t thank them enough. If you’ve been a victim of crypto fraud, don’t give up hope. Why The Rumored $1 Billion Budget For Grand Theft Auto VI Does Not Add Up

Here's why the rumored $1 billion budget for Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game, Grand Theft Auto VI, doesn't quite add up.

"Or was it i̶n̶f̶o̶r̶m̶e̶d̶ guesswork from analysts?"

Video game budgets will always be fictional, just like Hollywood movies. Unless there are receipts it's all speculation.

And Take Two has a marketing department with an already approved budget (just like studios in Hollywood).

thorstein15h ago

(Continue...I was in the Lincoln Tunnel)
Budgeting isn't included in the total cost because it is a separate budget. These companies intentionally inflate the numbers so they pay less in taxes.

This is not a new trend. And if you give your CEO $30 million per year and a game takes 5 years, you just add that $150million to the budget (CNN).

VenomUK1h ago

The costs don’t seem out of the realms of possibility. Remember that Rockstar isn’t just releasing just the GTA VI single player game, it has been building an online platform that will far surpass that of GTA V in size and scope that could last for 15 years or more - that takes significant investment.

isarai11h ago

I don't know where they get these numbers, absolutely NO games is spending anywhere near that amount on production even including marketing. If we're talking lifetime estimates for like a 10yr plan maybe, but even that would be a very vague projection. RDR2 at the time of release cost less that GTAV did and GTAV cost about 265mil with marketing being an average of about 200-300mil each.

Lightning7711h ago

I believe it's somewhere around there. Cod is 700m$ to make. I think GTA could be around there if not more. The insane level of detail in the trailer says it all.

Yeah I believe it's around there personally.

goken4h ago

The $700m cod budget is for tax purposes imho.
I also seriously doubt a game even as top notch as GTA would cost a billion to make.

QuantumMechanic3h ago

Yeah, that would be tax fraud. Public companies are independenly audited. They cannot just put whatever number they want "for tax purposes".

SimpleSlave2h ago

To be fair, the $700 million in development costs were over the game’s lifecycle, not just development - Black Ops Cold War (2020) in this case. And of course, this also include their marketing campaign.

But then, you take into account Activision Blizzard's shenanigans for not paying taxes, even getting tax refunds, moving billions to tax havens, plus all the money paid by Microsawft and Sony for exclusive deals, and I bet you that figure is substantially way lower than $700 millions. And I do mean SUBSTANTIALLY lower than that.

Oh, and if you think Rockstar hasn't figure out that scheme by now, lol, they have. They all have.

Same way the $100 rumor started, silly people.

Doom: The Dark Ages Launches to a Peak of 30k Concurrent Users

Doom: The Dark Ages has hit a peak of just under 31,000 concurrent players at launch, a figure much lower than both Doom and Doom: Eternal.

I guess that means the game is trash?

PRIMORDUS6h ago

No it's good but for $70 and Denuvo DRM on PC hard pass.

pwnmaster30005h ago

Don’t matter, if it’s not hitting 100k+ it’s considered trash and a failure.
That’s the new standard apparently

Becuzisaid8h ago

This game just didn't excite me like the last 2. I'm passing on it this time.

JEECE5h ago

Spin off vibe without the spin off price.

LucasRuinedChildhood7h ago

Could be affected by:
- A percentage of people will play this on GamePass which the last 2 games did not launch on.
- A percentage of players bought the Deluxe Edition which included early access, reducing the peak as players will start playing it on different days.

PRIMORDUS6h ago

Price most likely the issue, and while most don't know or care about Denuvo on PC, if you lower the price I'm sure it will sell more on all platforms.

VersusDMC5h ago

Well Clair obscure had the same situation(gamepass) and had a concurrent high of 150k and currently at 50k.

LucasRuinedChildhood2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Sure, but those numbers are higher than previous Doom games' peak on Steam as well.
- Doom 2016 (44,269)
- Doom: Eternal (104,891)

It seems like the peak would at least as high as Doom 2016.

Bit confused on one thing. That graph only starts from May 15. They don't seem to have been able to capture data for the early access players who started playing days before that.

LucasRuinedChildhood2h ago

So basically, I'm talking about relative to the peak numbers of the prior games.

I'm not saying that a game that released on GamePass cannot have high numbers on Steam. But the effect isn't 0%. And Early Access also affects the peak.
