PlayStation Portal Sales Continue to Prove Naysayers Wrong

Sony‘s PlayStation Portal gamble has paid off, if sales are anything to go by. Eight months after its release, the PS5 accessory continues to sell in major markets. According to Circana, the PS5 remote player was U.S. market’s best-selling accessory in dollar sales for the month of May as well as the year 2024 to date.

I really enjoy it. Its a convenience with a catch... currently. I'm confident that Sony will un-tether it from the console and let people use it for streaming from PS servers directly like PC players can do. Really utilize all the features of Gaikai that they purchased.

Them allowing off network connectivity is a good first step to achieving that goal.

Streaming would be really cool, I would like to play some PS3 games on it if possible.

I would love to play a game like Wet on Portal for some reason. I felt the Portal was perfect for playing Arashi on its smaller screen.

Loooooove the portal, there are some aspects to improve, but overall, a great first step (not in remote play, that's been out for years)

............ ummmmmmm best selling accessory in dollars? Well a controller cost around $60, what is the next accessory to buy? If you sold 2000 controllers, that would be $120000. You would only need to sell 600 portals to get the same amount. Isn't this the Microsoft wordplay that everyone talks about?

That's not how it works, your only taking into account the bare minimum possible. Using your example It they could have sold 2000 Portals and it would still be the highest earning accessory.

It doesn't need to sell at a 1:1 ratio with PS5 to be considered a success.

Sony is saying it's selling well the analysts and sales trackers are saying it's selling well, so I think we can all assume it's selling well.

I'd like to add that it's not the only expensive accessory.

It out sold things like Xbox Elite 2 ($180), DualSense Edge ($200).

Sony didn't write this report. This is Circana/NPD. They have always prioritize dollar sales. They only report unit sales for consoles but still ranked them based on their dollar sales. They have never reported unit sales for accessories, only dollar sales. And I bet the 2nd on the list for accessories was the Dualsense Edge...another $200 accessories.

FYI the best selling accessory up to the point of the Portal was the DualSense Edge which sells at the same price.so it's outselling that as well. Up until that point it was the regular DualSense. We don't have hard-core sales numbers but we do know it vastly exceeded Sony predictions and we know it was selling out really fast. We also know on Amazon that it's selling more than any single Xbox and Switch SKU currently.

I feel like I'm in a time machine and reading stories about PSVR2. It was just a year ago that we were told that initial sales proved PSVR2 naysayers wrong. How's that doing today?

what keeps an accessory like the VR2 selling is a nice flow of software to take advantage. something that has been a little lacking as of late. There are plenty of games... but not all of them appeal to the same demographics. I just watched the DF retro video about Riven and that one would make for a great VR2 experience. Cyan just needs to bring it out. I could see Sony dipping into their back catalog and taking some IP's that have been on hiatus and giving them the VR2 treatment. Killzone and Resistance come to mind. Even going so far as to have some patches made to let previous VR1 games take advantage of VR2 would be a good move as well.

I’ve been saying a Killzone MP VR game would be a headset seller, even Warhawk would be phenomenal.

As far as having patches for VR1 games is something I’ve been saying from the beginning.

PSVR2 is still getting games which means that it’s still getting support. Did anyone really expect for Sony to put their first party devs on PSVR2 to develop games, they didn’t for the first headset and still said it was profitable, enough to warrant a second iteration, same will be for PSVR2. I’m still happy with my PSVR2 just like I’m stilll happy with my Quest2.

If sales are floundering I’m sure Sony are happy it happening to an accessory device, and not to their main product the PS5.

Yeah, pretty crazy of me to expect Sony to put out first-party PSVR2 games like they did with PSVR's Astro-bot Rescue Mission and Blood&Truth - not to mention Playstation VR Worlds and RIGS, as well as first-party VR ports of Everybody's Golf, Driveclub, Super Stardust Ultra, Wipeout Omega Collection, and GT Sport.

I'm pretty sure if someone went back one could find someone saying the same things you are in regards to the Playstation Vita and Wii U. XBox One is still getting games so that must mean it wasn't a huge failure that sold only a third of it's main competitor. XBox Series X was sold out for a year so that must mean it is incredibly successful and still selling great.

All early sales tell is how many people are willing to buy something they know nothing about or don't care about it's shortcomings because of brand loyalty.

@Gameseeker_Frampt Out of those games from Sony first party for PSVR1 how many of the developers are still with Sony, so why would I expect anymore from them when I see that just this year they closed down London Studio. Would I like for Sony own devs to invest more into PSVR2, yes I would, but since they are not I will just play what games are on offer from third party developers, and not worry about what could of, should have, would have been if…

Today VR2 appears to be selling about 50% all meta headsets combined so doing well, especially the software support is continuing to look healthy

I got one 2 weeks ago and have been playing it every day. It’s a lot easier to pick it up anywhere in the house to play. My only gripe is the internet sometimes causes a temporary disruption, but 98% of the time it runs smooth.

How is your 5 connected to your home network, wired or wireless? Do you have a 5ghz supported wifi access point? Do you use a single point of access or a mesh network? And most importantly, the speed of your upload is a greater impact than the download speed.

I miss the old days of the PSP/Vita doing local remote play as opposed to the way the Portal does it (via internet). sony should update the portal to support local network (peer to peer) if you are in the same home network instead of sending the data out to the internet only to come back in to the same network. Having both local and internet play would be better than just having internet only.

Yes I have the dual band internet. I forgot the speed but it is the highest that AT&T U-Verse offers.

Yesterday I sat out in the garden with a beer (or three) and my Portal and played Pinball M and some GT7. I love my Portal for what it is!! Wifey read a book so she was happy I didn't talk to her all the time lol.

I got one. It’s not the best experience, but it’s nice when I wanna chill in the living room and play Dredge or something slower paced. Doesn’t blow my hair back, but I don’t regret getting it. Has its niche.
