UGO: Killzone 2 Review Build Numero Dos

UGO writes: "I know everyone seems to jump down my throat whenever I mention Killzone 2, but please bear with me, as I'm a bit annoyed.

Before New Years, we received a review build of Killzone 2. The embargo on the review lifts in February, but I took my time to conquer the game's campaign over the past couple weeks, taking notes and judging it for what would be my eventual review. After all, this is the review code, this is what I should be judging.

Yesterday we received an updated review code for the game. And this is where things get a little dodgy. When we review a game, we often play through it on a "debug" console, which allows us to play non-retail versions of games. From our perspective, the "review build" aspect implies that it's the final version and identical to what will appear on store shelves. Apparently this was not the case, at least for the first "review build" they sent."

waste of time article don't bother reading.. just complaining because they got 2 review discs.. they should be happy they even get included to send them a disc

The difference in play is probably more polish and get rid of a glitch or two.. use your head please!!

rucky5997d ago

Sorry I clicked at it despite your warning. It was pretty stupid and childish. Looks like we got another confirmed 8/10 from a biased site.

Killzone 2 Review Build Numero Dos
Posted by Russ Frushtick (aka Rusty) on 01/15 at 11:52 AM

I know everyone seems to jump down my throat whenever I mention Killzone 2, but please bear with me, as I’m a bit annoyed.

Before New Years, we received a review build of Killzone 2. The embargo on the review lifts in February, but I took my time to conquer the game’s campaign over the past couple weeks, taking notes and judging it for what would be my eventual review. After all, this is the review code, this is what I should be judging.

Yesterday we received an updated review code for the game. And this is where things get a little dodgy. When we review a game, we often play through it on a “debug” console, which allows us to play non-retail versions of games. From our perspective, the “review build” aspect implies that it’s the final version and identical to what will appear on store shelves. Apparently this was not the case, at least for the first “review build” they sent.

The one that came yesterday came along with a note that said the following:

“We realize you received a version of review code right around the holidays, however the team at SCEA wants to make sure that you are playing the most updated, cleanest version of the game for your reviews and impressions.”

I emailed SCEA to find out what exactly changed from the previous build to this build, but no response yet. Presuming I hear nothing, I’m probably going to have to play through the game again to see if anything major has changed. I know for sure that control issues I mentioned (regarding the game’s inability to let you remap all the controls or set crouch to a toggle) are still in there, but apart from that, it’s anyone’s guess.

Long story short, a “review build” is no longer a holy thing, a perfect replica of what gamers will play when they buy the title on launch day. And that’s deeply worrying, and may require us changing our review practices in the future.

Russ, people gave you hard time before and were very rude but I really do think that you complain too much brother. This game is a big deal to Sony and if they want you to have the best impression of what they are shooting for in the final release, then I don’t see a problem.

Lets not even mention your last rant about the controls as I agree with most that posted that stated that as a gamer you adapt to small differences between games and the developers have the right to choose how they want the game to be played.

Annoyances are a part of life, we really don’t need to hear every time you experience something that is less than desirable. You have an opportunity to review one of the most anticipated games of this generation of consoles so far, act like an adult and quite sweating the small stuff. If you want I could review the game for you and you can stick to playing Gears and COD 4 if you like, if not just give us information that is useful.

Daver5997d ago

what an idiot... like #1 said, just be happy to have 1 copy of the game to review...

CaseyRyback_CPO5997d ago

For the 360 games, its nothing but very excited writing. Not sure how you can describe it, but you can TELL these guys are gamers. And they LOVE their jobs.. but then when they do a PS3 game its like a terrible first time audition. They sit down in an empty room, the PS3 game walks in, and they ask it to show them something they've never concieved of before. Then when it does, they just say that they don't like its shoes.

I hate the whole unwritten requirement that the PS3 game has to be amazing, but be the same as other games. While many 360 titles get a pass on glitches/graphics/gameplay. I mean everyone pretty much threw Gears & Halo's SP out the window because the MP was there. Same with COD4. But now, KZ2 has to be the best SP game, and the best MP game in order to get an 8? heh...

Thats the only woah-is-me PS3 conspiracy that is actually provable. But thats the gaming media right now folks. if you don't believe me, just travel over to neogaf and watch the KZ2 thread with GamesRadar's comments. Its sickening that these people are going to give it a low score just to screw with the metascore.

freeblue5997d ago

anyone wants to guess what his review score for Killzone 2 will be if he neckpiting a good thing? just imagine the tiny little annoy things he will try to find. oh. look the dirt flying across the screen is look like a tiny rock. it should be dirt not rock. -5 points.

tplarkin75997d ago

Sony fans are looking more and more like religious Nintendo fanboys. Facts, fun, or innovation don't matter. As long as it's Mario, it's AAA material.

Killzone 2 has exposed the Sony bias.

FantasyStar5997d ago

yes plarkin, this news is like fanboy bait. Let the closet fanboys come. I hope 1UP (or whatever UGO wants to call em') does give Killzone 2 an 8 just to watch them squirm.

Like a "number" really mattered.

dznutz005997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

I need to get this of my chest so u can get of MS's breast (left breast FantasyStar right breast tplarkin)

first - of if this was a MS game u would be sayin the same thing

second - of ur comments make u a 360fanboy and all day ive been reading stupid comments by 360fanboy's that have no meaning or reasoning not to mention facts why because your jealous "maybe" or "maybe" its because u have no games to play or "maybe" just maybe u really feel ur right and these ps3fanboys are going crazy over a system that really is gonna die soon lmfao

but the truth is that as a ps3 owner myself i know that this game and my system will last and do great things but u sit in ur moms house on her couch eating her food playing the system she bought a say "Man i wish i had a job so i could buy myself a ps3" and thats not to say that every ps3 owner on n4g bought their ps3 with money they work 4 just to that u didnt

go a head and disagree with me on this but i know ur moms and there breast milk tastes better than MS's

o and fantasyStar i know u have a ps3 but still shut the hell up

lmao
DzNutz in ur mouth

edit: im not a fanboy because i dont hate the 360 or the wii i just like the controller of the ps3 and its games also i have no room in my life 4 two systems just so u know im 25 and i work dont have time to play that many games

Sarcasm5997d ago

Anybody can smell the 7/10 from a mile away from this guy.

Minuses
- No Co-op
- Controls not customizeable
- No differences in Review build from last Review build

FantasyStar5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

nutz, great job on your post. You put thought into it and that's more than most people here do(although that nutz comment was really unnecessary). Just sit back and enjoy the games that we have now instead of worrying about the games in the future. You'll stress out less that way. A strong man doesn't need to read the future, he makes his own. =D

I do see the PS3 as lasting longer than the 360 just because I'm an advocate of advancing technology. But just because someone disagrees with me doesn't mean I'm losing any sleep or time over this. You should chill out and take the internet less seriously. You'll have more time for your homework and some quality gaming time.

Everyone's a fanboy. I'm a fanboy, and so are you. Whether it's consoles, technology, or the games. There's no such thing as an "Unbiased" person.

Just be happy that you have the privilege of being able to play your PS3 and be passionate about the things you value: especially in these harsh economic times where paying rent and struggling with car payments is more important than arguing with someone over the internet. Life's too short to be pissed off all the time =D

And I know you have games you should be playing. Like Way of the Samurai for PS2?

P.S. - I'm not the one that hit the disagree button!

dznutz005997d ago

please trust and believe im not taking this seriously im just giving u my 10cents lol

and I do agree that there's no such thing as unbiased but there is also differences between being biased and being a fanboy

game on FantasyStar game on

developers are still striving to give us the best experience bar none? ..wtf

FantasyStar5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

It's weird huh?

silvacrest5997d ago

that his/her problem was he/she didn't want to do the same "final" review again but you no what? i dont care

anyone with a job knows the pain of getting a little extra work or having to redo something but we all suck it up and do it anyway, we don't b***h and moan on a website

GarandShooter5997d ago

'And that’s deeply worrying, and may require us changing our review practices in the future.'

Yeah, I'm really worried. Maybe your review practices should include purchasing a retail version of the game to review.

@ MURKERR - You're completely right. Every developer should strive to give us the best experience possible.

Fishy Fingers5997d ago

Not something I'd be moaning about. They're just keeping him as up to date as possible and he has TWO copies of KZ2 in hand. I'd be one ecstatic little gamer if I was in his position.

BRG90005997d ago

What's valid to complain about is that they wasted his time with the first copy. He's spent hours playing it once, and has to play through the whole thing again now with a sharp eye for differences, or else just publish a review based on the first build which may have issues the retail doesn't. And if you listen to game sites' podcasts, they often mention that playing a game for review is very different from playing it for fun. The situation does kind of suck for him.

Kleptic5997d ago

yeah its not like this guy had to play the first disc sent right away...if he is upset about getting an updated version, then why was he playing a game that he can't show a review for for nearly another month...

but its already more or less proven this guys review score is going to be pretty low...he claimed his control issues weren't fixed (that by the way was 2 weeks ago, when this guy flipped out because he couldn't exactly mimmick the controls of cod 4)...and he is basically whining about having to play killzone 2...again...before the people that are really excited for the game get to play it...yeah...tough job douche bag...we feel for you...seriously...

if Sony was concerned...as they should be...about these half-wit crap journalists unfairly judging the game...then they shouldn't have given a copy to shat ball review sites...

I would be very impressed if this guy gives the game above a 7.5...

Johnny Rotten5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

why can't they look at the things they didn't like about the game, see if the devs fixed it, then edit thier review to make it suit the newer version?

This also proves that when the reviews start rolling out we should take some of them with a grain a salt knowing that a newer review copy was sent out.

Gambit075997d ago

because that would require work

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro237d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken237d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown237d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72237d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken237d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya236d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast237d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood237d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro466d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72466d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_466d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga466d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23466d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000466d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin466d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole466d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix466d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989466d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

466d ago
Michiel1989466d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar770d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg770d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149769d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138770d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim770d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC770d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138770d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle770d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76770d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger770d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca770d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy770d ago (Edited 770d ago )

lukasmain770d ago
