When the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S first launched all the way back in 2020, console sales were not what either platform manufacturer wanted them to be. The pandemic slowed things down more than ever before, even though in the case of each next-gen console, all the units that were manufactured, sold.
Of course that didn’t last, and soon manufacturing limitations on the consoles were a thing of the past, and sales started to leap forward. For one next-gen console platform, at least.
After having to prove itself for years, Xbox doubled down and pulled it off..
Yep Xbox absolutely knocked it out of the park with that stunning show, it was everything a gaming showcase should be, games games and games, well done team Xbox.
It really did. Like I came out of that with the hype for new games I haven’t felt since… well the better years of E3.
It was without a doubt one of the better showcases in years. There was plenty there that excited me. Something has been lacking in years on all platforms

Well the disc version is just adding cost for a population that's largely not using it. It's a good move by them.
Hardly a competitor to the Pro though, assuming that's still coming out.
If they expect a $600 XSXSE whose only upgrade is an extra TB of SSD space to compete with a PS5 pro that has more than triple the raw compute power in its GPU... Phil has lost his mind.
Maybe in the US but many regions like in Aus physical games are often 30 to 40 dollars cheaper than digital.
I garuntee physical games so sell really well here based on that alone
Yeah i mean shouldn't they atleast make the series x cheaper so that more people switch from the S to X. It'd helped too since the S is holding some games back.

If they’re going to stick with the same old hardware they should’ve announced a series s with a disk drive. As it stands in my opinion these 3 new options seem pretty useless especially considering ps5 pro should also at least be officially announced when they are released this holiday.
$350 for the Series S 1TB
$450 for the Series X Digital 1TB
$600 for the Series X 2TB.
Meh, I was hoping that given the lackluster sales they would use this to lower the price of the console by $50 each and sunset the 512GB Series S.
The xbox rumors about the handheld and the 2026 console are fake.
The 2026 one was started by some xbox fanboy on twitter who was mad there wasn't going to be a mid gen update like the PS5 Pro.
The handheld rumor also seems fake but I'm not sure where it started from, but I get the feeling it was started because Tom Warren an actual reliable leaker said there was plans for a PlayStation handheld that would play PS4 games, and the xbox rumor was just started to "us too".

The next Xbox rumour ain't totally false. Sarah Bond has hinted multiple times and even in today's showcase regarding the next Xbox (why do that as early as 2023/2024?).
Xbox is aiming to repeat the X360-esque early gen start advantage, hence skipping the Pro update.
2026 or not, they are aiming to release before the PS6.
The only question is, will they actually be able achieve the head start over PS.

Because they can't sell consoles. Because the fanbase thinks they are going publisher/subscription only and leaving consoles and they want to reassure people they are making another console.
But that console is coming in 2028 as leaked in the ABK court case. And we also know from reliable rumors that Microsoft only entered into a contract with AMD (the very first step) (PlayStation had already entered into their PS6 contract for a 2028 console at least a year prior) a few months ago, there is no way they could tool up a whole chip fab at TMSC manufacture chips and do all the testing and create all the supply lines needed for a console for release in that short of a time.
And rushing out a new more powerful console after just announcing these things makes it seem even less likely.. And even if they do, who's going to buy the thing? The most popular SKU they have is the cheap series s. What is the incentive to rush out another more powerful console and split the user base even further... and one would hope they aren't going to have another generation held back by the series s...

You can buy PS5 for 299$/249€ in some limited deals... so... Where do Microsoft live? In another planet, dimension or time? They seem to be stuck in 2020.

I’m not as relentless as some on here. In fact, I only respond in kind and I got pulled into this site after seeing how some commenters were always rushing in to be the first comment and detail conversations in favor of their box. Now that their console of choice is doing badly, they preach kumbaya. Just saying.
Is it implied that "console wars" refers to the fans warring vs. the war the platform holders are constantly in?
Obviously the platform holders have been at war and will be as long as they have to compete for our dollars.
They're fine, as long as you know this isn't REAL. I can say how much distaste I have for MS but still have a best friend that only games on Xbox. Its not that serious .

There is fuckall wrong with having a console war....it keeps things fun and interesting. Well unless you're a supporter of Xbox that is.
Most of the intelligent self respecting Xbox supporters have jumped ship and all that's left now are the mouth breathing knuckle draggers.
Console wars were great when it was SNES vs Genesis. Was always a great topic in the school yard. You got the Genesis port the friend got the SNES port. Always fun to compare who was better. I always looked forward after the school week and rent a game for the SNES. Now the console wars are pretty much done and over with PS3 vs XB360 was pretty much the last of the console wars. Anything after that is pretty much one sided with almost everybody going PS4 and PS5. To me the console wars started to drop after the PS3 and XB360 ran their course. Be interesting to see the handheld wars I am in the market for a new handheld system.
The SNES vs Genesis days were definitely memorable. I was lucky to have both consoles :) It's interesting to see how the focus is shifting now. Handheld wars could bring back some of that excitement. Which handheld system are you considering?
I had both but I preferred the Genesis for the sports games and I liked Sega's 6 button controller better for fighting games. That D pad was a godsend to pull off Street Fighter moves!
The "golden age" of gaming to me was between 1995 and 2000 when it was a 3 horse race between Sony, Nintendo, and Sega. For me, there WAS no console war because I genuinely loved all 3 platforms, with each bringing something unique to the table. I miss that era.
It also helps that back then, they used very different hardware, today's consoles have very similar internals to each other, especially modern Playstations and Xboxes.
I would say with the defeat of Xbox and Nintendo being it's own thing in family friendly handheld gaming, the console wars are over. For those of us that enjoy that kind of entertainment and are aware of this aspect, it was fun while it lasted.

The Steamdeck has currently sold around 3 million worldwide. A handheld Xbox would be lucky to double that. As others have suggested, there IS no handheld war. Nintendo owns it.

The xbox as a console is a shadow of what it was during the 360 era. IF the term war offends you then I guess that you lean towards the green brand.. Just a guess mind you.. Regardless, the brand has been mismanaged for way too long and that's a key factor as to why the gappage as increased yoy between it and its closest rival.
In a handheld war, Nintendo cannot be beaten.
PSP was a surprisingly robust effort, and it came the closest... While doing half as well as the DS.
closest? By any metric imaginable, it was not even close. it's easy to assume the that the PSP might as well be considered a success but it sold over 80mil vs over 150mil by the DS. It was not until the failure of Wii U, Xbone and Vita did people finally realize how well the PSP actually did. before all those, it was generally called a failure by many, considering how badly the DS crushed it in sales.
I can see why Microsoft is putting their games on PlayStation with these numbers
Imagine how many copies of future games like Elder Scrolls VI, Blade, Indiana Jones and more they could sell if they went fully multiplatform.

Sony would probably be selling more if they stopped sending mixed signals about their future. Putting games on PC because you are taking data analytic advice from Microsoft about the future of consoles is folly and has limited their potential sales. Microsoft want Sony and the world to believe that consoles are done as a business so companies like Sony and Nintendo etc can end up serving Microsoft's platform. Remember when it comes to Microsoft "It is us or no one and the three E's" Don't fall for it.
