IGN: Killzone 2 Preview - The Best Bits of Killzone 2

After years of anticipation we've finally played the final code for Killzone 2 through from start to finish. Naturally, there's a lot of stuff we're not yet able to talk about, due to heavy restrictions from Sony, but also because we don't want to spoil the game for you.

However, what we can say is that PlayStation 3 owners are in for a treat come February, with Guerrilla's much-hyped shooter promising to blow all other PS3 FPSes out of the water. Here's why:

1. Eye-Popping Presentation
2. Blood-Pumping Gameplay
3. Tools of Destruction
4. Killer AI
5. Monster Multiplayer

POGfinder5995d ago

I expect a 10/10 from IGN

Trust me people

KZ2 will do wonders when released

If u have even touched the BETA u do know what i am talking

POGfinder5995d ago

is even more awesome than the MP

My god this game will blow every FPS away

Lifendz5995d ago (Edited 5995d ago )

can't wait to see the usual people go into damage control mode.

Anyone know if the game is gold yet? I expect a million plus sales in the U.S. alone on day one.

Nineball21125995d ago

"There's never a quiet moment in Killzone – if you don't like the crack of gunfire then this simply isn't the game for you. However, if you find gut-wrenchingly visceral action to die for there's nothing better on PlayStation 3."

And

"Importantly, it's all superbly balanced, presenting enough of a challenge to ensure you won't breeze through the entire game without breaking sweat but still throwing in a number of solid battles that require you to use your noodle as much as your trigger finger."

Sweeeeeeeeet...

shingo5995d ago

I expect the game to score 9.8/10 by IGN (^_^)

Late Feb = Earth Will Shatter.

Ghoul5995d ago

4. Killer AI

CAN YOU READ bloody fanboys

thor5995d ago (Edited 5995d ago )

The only reason people hate on the AI and gameplay is because the graphics are good.

It's all too easy to say "it looks great but it's not all about looks," so rumour starts spreading about its AI and gameplay not living up to the standard of the graphics.

If you give the graphics 10/10, then you feel like, even if the gameplay is better than anything else you've ever played, the gameplay doesn't merit the same score because the graphics are so good. It's only natural to ask if the gameplay is good when we can see with our eyes that the graphics are amazing.

The critics get silenced every time with the previews though. Do they honstly believe the hype train would have got this far and not realised at some point that the gameplay isn't up to scratch? Everyone's asked that question. But the hype kept building based on the previews.

HighDefinition5995d ago

1. Eye-Popping Presentation
2. Blood-Pumping Gameplay
3. Tools of Destruction
4. Killer AI
5. Monster Multiplayer

How every FPS should be.

SL1M DADDY5995d ago

What am I saying!? It's always sounded this awesome!

Ghoul5995d ago

@thor

I quoted this part couse all the xbox fanboys based killzone 2 and claimed it had horrible AI, well ONCE AGAIN you are proofen wrong.

Killzone 2 is awesome in every way.

Best Tech
Best Graphics
Top Notch MP (maybe the best too we will see)
Top Notch Design
Killer AI

Killzone 2: 10

No-co op 9.5,
No Speical edition 9.2
Not smooth turning/sensitibity, not 100% CoD4 control scheme 8.7
glowing red eyes make enemies easys to spot ;) 8.59

8.59 will be final score from GS, and GT.

0.0000% of GS, GT reviews will stop me from playing it on Feb. 27. :)

Kleptic5995d ago

well...playing the MP beta a lot on killzone 2...and owning R2...killzone 2 should get above a 9.5 if IGN's review system is to have any credibility...

R2 may have an overall bigger package content wise, because of the co-op (no matter that killzone 2 'only' has 32 players...it absolutely crushes R2's competitive mode without breaking a sweat)...there is no doubt based on seeing the videos and readin countless positive previews that killzone 2 is the better overall game...

but I agree with above...GT will peg an 8/10 without question...GS isn't even a site anymore, so that is irrelevant...i am more interested to see what giantbomb gives it...as that is basically the entire crowd that made GS become one of the biggest game sites around...Gerstmann has been around forever...and knows his shooters...i am very interested to see what he has to say about it (preview wise, everything has been very positive)...although Ryan Davis was the nitwit that dogged Uncharted for having 'tough and frequent enemies'...basically saying Uncharted had good AI, and plenty of enemies to shoot at...which is somehow a bad thing...

but GT's review will blatantly call foul on aspects of killzone 2 that other games received a free pass on...i wouldn't be surprised to see a 'it simply looks too good...-2' under visuals...thats a joke...but they will come up with anything possible to bring the game down...they always do when its related to this system...not to mention them giving Gears 2 best graphics for 2008...the only site to say gears 2 tops MGS4 (if its console only) or Crysis: Warhead, which wasn't even on the list for some reason...

whatever...my guess is a 9.1 meta when everything is said and done...countless >9.5s from major sites and mags will be brought down by countless 7's from shat ball sites and blogs that manage to be counted on metacritic...

pixelsword5995d ago

Kotaku, GameTrailers, and 1up was always on the outs with me

Gamespot is coming back, but since they will take a bribe for scores, they'll never be a site I can trust again.

IGN is the only site I'll listen to, but I still will rank my own games...

...because I like to, you know, think for myself.

Consoldtobots5995d ago

this console race is like professional wrestling and PS3 is a wrestling manager sending his 900lb gorilla (MGS4) and now that he's had his fun it's the 1200lb gorilla's turn to have fun.

If u want to play baby AI games then play GAYLO3 at 600p cuz the game looks like a baby vs KZ2

caffman5995d ago

but when it comes to sales Killzone will never match it

thereapersson5995d ago (Edited 5995d ago )

If sales equal quality to you then I believe you're beyond help at this point...

caffman5995d ago

no. If that was the case I wouldn't have got half the games I own including several under selling PS3 exclusives. I just love baiting nasim and don't have a problem with any other PS3 fanboys as a whole

joevfx5995d ago

the only reason Halo sold was cause they were alot of xbox owners and zero qualities games for them to soend there money on. i bet most xbox owners bougth 2 copies od halo cuase there was no other games to buy lol. i have halo 1 and 2 and they are hands down the worst FPS games i have ever played. soooo boring. nowhere near the status of call of duty 4 or half life 2.

caffman5995d ago

come back when you learn to type

Sanzee5995d ago

I represent all Xbox 360 fans when I say this:

I am very jealous that PS3 owners get Killzone 2. All Xbox 360 fans are. How do I know? Because I'm one of them. Alot of them won't admit, but I will for them. You PS3 owners are very lucky, and I'm happy to see you getting a great exclusive FPS. I just hope that Guerilla makes a good profit, because this game deserves high sales. That's why I wish it was coming to the 360. A multi-console game always makes more money, but considering the situation, I think it will sell quite well as a PS3-exclusive.

As for the Xbox 360, I'm looking forward to Mass Effect 2 more than anything.

being the gold standard that everything else will be held up to.

I haven't played the beta, and in a way, I'm glad. When I rip off the plastic and pop open the case for the first time... it's gonna be like Christmas in February.

I'm really stoked to play this game!

MAR-TYR-DOM5995d ago

IT WILL get at least 9.5/10 cause R2 got 9.5/10 and Killzone 2 > R2 by a KILOMETER!

POGfinder5995d ago

IF there is a good article on PS3 then it is approved even before the story reaches 10 degree

wonder why

Nineball21125995d ago

Jamie approved it. Since he's a mod, he's got the ability to approve a story on his own.

I would imagine he realizes that Killzone 2 is the hottest topic going right now and it's extremely interesting to 99% of the gamers that visit this site.

But that's just a theory I have. ;-)

POGfinder5995d ago

What makes Killzone's multiplayer stand out are the seven player types available to both ISA and Helghast forces. Initially you're only able to play as the bog-standard infantryman with a choice of just a couple of weapons, but the more you play the more badges and ranks you earn, which enables you to select different character classes such as a medic, heavy weapon trooper and so on. Each class is gifted with unique skills, so engineers can set up automated turrets to protect objectives, scouts have active camouflage that makes them difficult to spot and tacticians can call in air support in the shape of ATACs, flying drones kitted out with miniguns. Players are therefore encouraged to put in as much time in multiplayer as possible, because you're able to mix and match skills rather than forced to only play as one specific class.

Importantly, even if you're a rookie with no experience Killzone 2's multiplayer is a cinch to pick up and play. The basic arsenal is decent enough to stand up against the big weapons provided you've got a steady aim, plus there's always the option of nicking a better weapon from the still-warm corpse of a downed enemy. Alternatively, hone your skills in the Skirmish mode, which serves up the same experience as playing online, only against bots. As you improve you'll climb up the online leaderboard, which frequently dishes out additional rewards and badges to the most outstanding players.

Nineball21125995d ago

I know that other games use the same type of concept (R2 comes to mind), but I think this type of leveling up in multiplayer is just total win.

It really gives you incentive to stick with it. This type of leveling system helps to ensure that there will be an active online community for a long time with the game.

shingo5995d ago

Yeah, from my long experience with the Beta, I can comfortably say that the gameplay is 2x better than the graphics! :o

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX234d ago (Edited 234d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne234d ago (Edited 234d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro234d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown234d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72234d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya233d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast234d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood234d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro463d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72463d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_463d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga463d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23463d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000463d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin463d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole463d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix463d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989463d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

463d ago
Michiel1989463d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor767d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar767d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg767d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149767d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138767d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim767d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC767d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138767d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle767d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76767d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM767d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger767d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca767d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy767d ago (Edited 767d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain767d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright767d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
