PlayStation Stars Commemorate Jim Ryan With a Digital Bobblehead Version

Sony has launched a PlayStation Stars campaign to commemorate Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan's departure.

For someone who was apparently fired (according to the locals on here). Sony seem to do some nice things for him. Leaving parties and now a playstation stars reward item.

The best PR you can do is just pretend like everything is normal and business as usual

I highly doubt it was a "You're f******* fired, get the hell out of here" but more of a civil agreement between the pair which benefited both of them.

Jim got to keep the legacy of his career untainted and Sony didn't get any bad PR in the news which would have made them seem incompetent if it was over any GaaS U-turns, they'd have been ridiculed online.

All I'm going to say I find it super hard to believe this guy put all these ideas and changes in place then decided to bail before anything came from it. Also why say he's leaving in September and have a guy take over until he official leaves in March the following year? Why not just let him run things as normal as the other guy shadows him and then the new guy would take over once he finally leaves. Just seems super strange to me.

I dunno, the GaaS direction is pretty stinky. Also, how need more first-party games launched on a better schedule. I think the shift to GaaS affected that. My huge worry is Helldivers 2 success has opened the door now. I can see Sony trying like crazy to now make this design the standard. Bend Studios mentioned their project is GaaS.

I do not like this direction and you have to ask yourself why would you choose a GaaS direction over just creating standard games?

He was with Sony for a long time, but his tenure as CEO was a disaster: the PSVR 2, the Bungie acquisition, pivoting all game development toward GAAS, Naughty Dog canceled GAAS game, etc. I mean, he made nothing but terrible decisions and set Sony up for some hard times in the short term.

Now that the dust has settled on Ryan, I feel that it's similar to Mattrick where the company wants to take a direction and you really just need a conduit for your ideas.

For context, Mattrick was roasted to oblivion for the Xbox One reveal. Next we know, he's out, Spencer is in. But Spencer didn't really change anything beyond messaging for a very similar approach. Spencer seems, to me, like a continuation of that idea but are taking a different route. Mattrick is like a landmark to identify a point in Xbox history where the company wanted to take their current trajectory.

I suspect this is very similar with Ryan now. We may see PlayStation taking a similar direction, but repackaged to be more palatable.

I guess time will tell if Ryan was really as bad as we think he is. Personally, I think history was kind to Mattrick because he was very transparent about what Xbox would become after Xbox 360.

Both were kind of pariahs and regarded as the "dark age" for their respective companies, with both departing at the height of their unpopular ideas.

There are differences, clearly. But there are parallels or at least early signs of that.

Where we can make the full comparison is if we see Sony adopting a different approach to reach the same outcome.

I won't be going for this Bobble Head, I feel like Jim Ryan's reign was one of the worst periods in Playstation, also probably the reason I haven't seen a good reason to buy the PS5. Hopefully he's replacement doesn't continue in the same direction, I'm really missing the magic Playstation used to have.

I was never a fan of Jim Ryan. He has the charisma and enthusiasm of a piece of limp lettuce. He also made some questionable decisions and took playstation in a direction I didn't like. Hopefully this can be put right now.
