PSU Exclusive: Killzone 2 interview

Justin Pinter Writes:

"This February will be a critical month for the PlayStation 3 as Killzone 2 will finally reach the hands of anxious gamers world wide. To learn more before the title's upcoming release, we interviewed Guerrilla Games game director Mathijs de Jonge."

Fishy Fingers5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

Kind of contradicts himself...

First answer regarding what their upto now: "...and of course we’re preparing for the next game."

Later once asked about a new PSP game or KZ3 in the future: "our total focus right now is on getting Killzone 2 finalized."

Hmmm... What would you guys prefer, a PSP title, or continuation of KZ2? Personally, I'd have to go for the latter.

Edit @ Lifendz, I feel ya, but I cant resist. Oh and the interview states they're still doing the final bug fixing so the release cant be bumped up :(

Lifendz5997d ago

the game is over a month away and yet it seems like N4G is flooded with all things KZ2. That's not a bad thing; I just have to dodge spoilers like crazy now. Right before MGS4 launched it was this way and I remember several sites spoiling certain moments in the game. If the game is done this early why not bump up the release? I know there are factors being considered that I am not aware of: I just want KZ2 now!

jkhan5997d ago

Naa I think they should work on a brand new franchise using Killzone 2's engine or even Killzone 3 will be awesome. Let Ready At Dawn or the developers that are making R2 retribution make Killzone Liberation 2.

Aclay5997d ago

If I had to choose between Guerrilla starting a PSP title or continuing the Killzone series on the PS3, I'd go for another Killzone PS3 title without a doubt.... but I wouldn't mind seeing Guerrilla do something different like a new IP in a non-FPS genre.

When he said "...and of course we’re preparing for the next game", he could have have been talking about Killzone or something entirely different...I hope we find out what they are up to next before the end of the year at least.

decapitator5997d ago

Just a quick heads up. You doods have to becareful of the stuff you read from PSU.

Screw all the interviews, reviews etc
All we need is February 27th to come faster.

Fishy Fingers5997d ago

Or in other words, a time machine. Get to work with the $100 you just won ;) (congrats).

Aclay5997d ago

"Screw all the interviews, reviews etc
All we need is February 27th to come faster."

LOL, you got that right!

I'm pretty sure there will be some Killzone 2 copies released early or people that get their hands on the game much earlier, because that's almost always the case with Video Game releases and some DVD releases (some people had Dark Knight on Blu-ray about 1-2 weeks before release)

I bet those early KZ2 copies are going to be selling on Ebay for a hefty chunk of change, and if I can catch one of those early copies, I'm willing pay some serious cash to get my hands on it sooner.

I just want Guerrilla to announce a freakin' Collectors Edition or something because this game deserves it and tons of people would get it because I sure would.

sanamsingh5997d ago

GG will win studio of the year 2009?

morganfell5997d ago

I would say it's entirely possible. They really have broken new ground and it must be noted that their innovations are being freely spread across the PS3 developer network.

cereal_killa5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

PP will be voting for the Soljaboy game for GOTY 2009 since he doesn't own a PS3 and never will he's to smart to own both systems and open his mind to a ton of great games that both system produce. Maybe he'll put that hi eye Q of his to something that may save the world from destruction like not breeding to produce a child.

PURE GENIUS folks!!!!!!!!!!

On topic: I think it's way to early to claim anything GOTY the year of exclusives hasn't even started and were still waiting to see if some of these rumored games that are suppose to be showing up this year even will show up i.e ME2, GOW3 or GT5 i think after E3 2009 we can put some of these rumore to bed once and for all and then we can start puting up our favorite games in that pile of GOTY hopeful's

TheTwelve5997d ago

...has mentioned the fact that Killzone 2 will, at times, use 100% of the PS3's power, based on this interview.

"To be honest I don’t know who said Killzone 2 only uses 60% of the SPUs as that’s simply not true. It all depends on what is happening at a certain moment in the game. In some (rare) cases when there isn’t much action going on the game doesn’t require all the SPUs to run at full speed, but there are plenty of combat heavy situations where we max out on all SPUs and run at 100%."

Fishy Fingers5997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

I'll mention it, to use anything less than 100% is stupid. If they'd admit to using less than that I would jump any frame drops or texture pop etc.

Using 100% of the SPUs doesnt mean using 100% of the consoles potential, just means they've used the hardware accordingly, it's through otimizing their engine they will achieve more, exaclty the same as any other developer.

Why as a dev, would you be proud of letting part of the hardware sit idle?

jspc19895997d ago (Edited 5997d ago )

it makes you wonder who came out with the 60% figure tho? :-S. Oh well theres probably going to be a barrage of comments on here and probably not very nice ones lol.

It is nice to know that there using as much as they can though, there would be no point in knowlingly limiting yourself.

oh and @fishy fingers - yes you are right but there wont be a big difference. Its pretty much representative of what to expect at full pelt. Just as the 360 can stil be pushed further, there wont be a large difference but things here and there that couldnt be done when the console launched.

oh and p.s. lol when did games suddenly become a battle for power supremacy lol - occasionally i think there are some people who spend more time masturbating over games consoles than there are playing them - forgive me for being so crude.

ThaGeNeCySt5997d ago

it's why i don't dive into the whole "we used ___% of _____'s power"

i think it's retarded

morganfell5997d ago

You make a good point but it hasn't been mentioned much because the remark is very relative. How are they being employed? Is one simply dedicating itself solely to a function, such as hardware physics and therefore that is 100% usage?

The answer is too vague at the moment. At GDC, GG is scheduled to deliver a white paper on the PS3 and Killzone 2 so likely we will get a better picture then.

joevfx5997d ago

when you think about it, killzone 2 is really killzone 1 for a ton of people. not everyone played the first one and it didnt seem to get the hype and press that killzoen 2 is getting. its basically an entire new game. so they will definitly come out with KZ3 , with out a doubt. plus at that point they will already have the engine going and alreayd be extrememly comfortable with the PS3 tech, so they will be able to refine the game to perfection.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro235d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown235d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72235d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken234d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya234d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast235d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood235d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro464d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72464d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_464d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga464d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23463d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000464d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin464d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole464d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix464d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989464d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor464d ago (Edited 464d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

464d ago
Michiel1989464d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor768d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar768d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg767d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz149767d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance1138768d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim768d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC768d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance1138768d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle768d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix76768d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

REDGUM767d ago

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware730768d ago (Edited 768d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger767d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca768d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy768d ago (Edited 768d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain768d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright768d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
