Sorry But Rising Dev Costs Don't Justify The Dark Patterns In Tekken 8

"Tekken 8 features a cash shop despite being a $70 game due to rising dev costs but that doesn't justify unethical practices." - Saad from eXputer.

Dazelya36d ago

The reason for DLCs and microtransactions is not because of increased game development costs. But the fool who prepared this article cannot even understand this... This is a fighting game and it doesn't come out every year like CoD. These games will continue to receive support for years, and of course they can't/won't do this with the 70 dollars you gave. Also, it is up to you whether you want to buy a costume or not. I have never been someone who is bothered by cosmetic microtransactions, and I buy them all, both to support them and because I just love cosmetic options.

Popsicle36d ago

Additional skins used to be earned by playing the game multiple times and achieving multiple goals which added to replay value and fun.

Dazelya36d ago

There are already sufficient alternative costumes and cosmetic content in the game. As I said, you can't expect years of support for the game with the $70 you pay. Any content that does not disrupt the balance of the game can be sold, and there is no problem with that. If you have money or want to buy it, you can buy it. Otherwise, you won't buy it and the problem will be solved.

neomahi35d ago

It used to be called unlockable content back in the day

Terry_B36d ago

Many of the costumes in the shop were free in previous Tekken games.

Some characters feel like they were excluded to be catchers as dlc. Eddy Gordo as DLC but Shaheen in the base game? That was pure dlc bait.

ChasterMies36d ago

“But the fool who prepared this article cannot even understand this... This is a fighting game and it doesn't come out every year like CoD.”

I’m scratching my head at this logic. Maybe it’s because I’m an old man but I remember a period of several decades when a publisher would release a game, a customer would buy it, and the publisher profit from that sale.

Lexreborn236d ago

As a person who plays fighting games religiously, I completely agree with you. I rather have a base fighting game that gets added content over time then the previous model that was like call of duty and still charged for the cosmetics. People talk about this time where you unlocked costumes and characters in a menu. But, those characters weren't truly unique. They were more like an alternate skin of another character with a few animation changes.

The difference in characters now is VASTLY different then before. The costume creations in the games completely trump any event based costumes that come. And, I don't NEED varient costumes for the entire cast if I only play 1-2 characters. Even if I play the ENTIRE cast I don't care if I miss a christmas themed costume for one character over another.

I am perfectly content with having a core roster and IF a future character drops I want I don't mind giving the dev 6 bucks to get them and also have the choice to NOT buy something I won't use. And I certainly don't want fragmented iterations that act as balance patches.

A good example is Blaz Blue, they have 4 different versions each version has cosmetics and character DLC with a set system. Take Guilty Gear Xrd and rev 2, now we have Strive and it's getting much more support better combat changes and still has great netcode. And you only have to buy Strive, after a while you could pick strive up for 20 and season pass on sale most days for half the price.

If COD can get away with yearly releases with bare minimum upgrades tons of microtransactions and still be a top played game year over year. WHY are other franchise being picked apart for giving you a base game ALL quality updates for free and developed characters AFTER the release WITH special cosmetics and costumes to boot on top of creating special costumes for the existing cast with varying colors and in some instances adding additional game modes for the next 7 years.

HOW IS THAT A PROBLEM!?

staticall36d ago

@Dazelya
Many games doesn't come out every year, yet have a ton of content, rich storyline, alternative costumes/weapons/skins without need to pay - Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring and many, many more (fighting games aren't special here). And they too get support for years to come. Fighting games are greedy, they want to monetize it to hell and back, so top management get huge bonuses. Microtransactions doesn't help anyone and doesn't improve the game for players, only for payers.

If you paid even a cent for the game, it shouldn't have any micro- or macrotransactions. Period. Ever.

P. S.: Also, this "Don't like it? Don't buy it" mentality doesn't work and haven't work ever, sadly.

Yi-Long36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

I'd rather see them keeping the base-game's price at 60-80 bucks for 3-4 years, and then supporting it with free new updates (characters. stages), instead of the current way of releasing a game, then immediately nickel & diming us with season passes while the base game goes on deep sale within months because as soon as DLC hits you're dividing your player-base between haves and have-nots, and thus the have-nots are now looking at an incomplete game where numerous characters and stages in their game are greyed out and unavailable unless they cough up more money ...

Lexreborn236d ago

When it comes to fighting games as long as you can fight a character there really isn’t a “have not scenario” unless you actually want said character. And if it’s support after the launch of said game you will always be able to fight the character in question.

But of course if you want this BRAND new content, that they are developing AFTER you bought a game presented to you as a complete product. Then what again are you complaining about? These devs are still actively working on the Game you have, updating it and changing the ORIGINAL product you bought and improving your experience.

Is that not a continued service that should be equally compensated for?

If the game released with 2 characters, training mode, no trials and had online with a separate package including 15 characters and costumes I would understand the resentment.

But you are talking about a game that you get a complete story mode. 18-24 characters, extra modes, a robust online experience and character creation. And that’s not enough to justify a 70$ tag?

And with people who are ACTUALLY committed to fighting games like myself putting in 700-1000 plus hours in year 1? Perhaps the option for you to wait for what you consider a “complete” package is what you should wait for, but isn’t that still something completely within your ability to do? Wait for what you deem reasonable?

If the base community like myself or OP find the content engaging and enjoying it why are we arguing over “devs being greedy” when truth is there won’t be a happy medium?

Because if we go back to the 90s model get ready for the type of support that Nether realms is getting panned for RIGHT now with how they support their game 2-3 years with minimal improvements and then release another version that is also not complete.

Popsicle35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Agreed. If development cost is truly the issue, I would rather pay a higher base price for a complete game instead of being nickeled and dimed over the span of months or years.

neomahi35d ago

It's for both, moreso now than ever. You're both right but it was a bad business practice when Xbox instituted it back on the Xbox 360 as a means to "compete" with PlayStation's exclusivity power because of strong developer relationships, it was Xbox's only way to fight back against that, and look at what it's done to us today. It's no longer about additional content as it was meant to then, no, before the game has gone gold, they dissect the game to sell pieces to you later. I don't know what I'm talking about? Do the work. Watch a documentary on the reboot of Killer Instinct for Xbox One and then look at the launch of Street Fighter 6, then tell me I'm wrong

Plus Nina Williams looks like SHYTE !!!!
You F up her look and skinny body with big T-TS...
I don't buy this (lets not hurt anyones feeling age) CRAP !!!
Put her in the right skinny type cat suit showcasing her sexiness and long ponytail
otherwise your franchise will DIE !!!!

SimpleSlave36d ago

(lets not hurt anyones feeling age) 😂 I like it. The fact that you think you can hurt anyone's feelings is quite amusing.

Some of you are so terribly detached from reality and so lost that you stopped making sense a long time ago. And while far be it for me to shame you for sexually enjoying 3D characters a little bit WAY too much, I think that you should seriously consider unplugging. Go outside and get some mental help.

But you do you, bud...I mean, it's not like you have any other choice. Obvi...

ROCKY2836d ago

Oh did I hurt your sensitive youth feelings !
that the issue with your generation - your soft !

Nina did not need a cosmetic change 😊
But enjoy your life young one...

senorfartcushion36d ago

This is true.

The margins are created by the publishers. If someone representing either the Devs or the publishes says "oh because everything is so expensive now, because we need ....."

No.

F*** off.

These costs are your choice for the product that you're making.

MADGameR36d ago

You see the business model has always been profit. That applies to ALL businesses. Companies are in business to make MONEY and PROFIT, without that, what is the point of being in business? Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of paying money for DLC, but I can understand the business side of things.

Aaroncls735d ago

I feel the real blame should be on the people that pay for this shit.
If it does make significant revenue, devs would be stupid not to put it in.

Mortal Kombat's Way Of Dealing With Rage Quitters Is Just What Tekken 8 Needs

Fahad from eXputer: "Bandai Namco has been banning excessive rage quitters in Tekken 8, but their solution doesn't punish those who don't rage quit as often."

Furesis6d ago

This "issue" has been blown way out of proportions. I have never seen someone rage quit on anyone that i've watched and i personally have maybe close to 200h in myself and this has never happened to me. Sure if they can make it like MK great but this is such a none issue imho.

slayereddy4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Your experience is nothing compared to the information they will have on disconnects, so if they say it is an issue you will accept that it is an issue that needs to be dealt with.

ReBurn6d ago

I'm ok with banning serial pluggers in ranked matches. But what I would like to see happen instead is to put people with higher than acceptable disconnect percentages into matches with other pluggers until they stop disconnecting. Let the pluggers play together in separate lobbies until they learn to lose gracefully.

slayereddy4d ago

As well as the measures they have implemented why can't they just seamlessly change the inputs from player to AI player so the player can continue the match and still recieve the match points.

Monetization in Gaming Is Getting Insane

Trevor Walker said: Well, here we are again. Every time I think I’ve said all I have to say about this topic, another studio falls into the same cycle. Monetization in video games seems to be getting more and more out of hand. If you’ve played any AAA title in the last 6 years, you’ve surely seen it. Battle passes, exclusive skins, and sometimes pay to win features have spread throughout the gaming industry like a plague, and we need a cure. Badly. I never thought I’d see the day, but the first game that comes to mind is one that holds a special place in my heart.

victorMaje13d ago

You need a cure. Here it is:

1. Don’t buy the game.
2. Don’t just not buy the game, announce it!

Announce on every social media/chat/discourse/streaming … platform available & imaginable that you will not buy the game that is coming out & state the reason that we all know. Then advise others to do the same.

Once you’ve announced it, announce it again for the next game by the same dev that you will not buy their future product either, because of their past dealings with consumers.

3. See 1.

PRIMORDUS13d ago

I don't sub to anything digital, games, movies, TV shows, etc. I just take what I want for PC for the unbeatable price of $0.00 🤣 But I sometimes buy the occasional game, but as for the others I mentioned yeah ok, haha paying for a streaming service to watch shows, movies, etc man GTFO lol

jznrpg13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I know many people who don’t buy MTs or support gaas. But unfortunately there are just as many people that I know who do and they don’t care about it. Companies won’t stop doing it until the vast majority don’t buy anything. Some GaaS do it better than others but most are looking to make as much MT money as they can get away with and there’s too many who don’t mind it at all

anast13d ago

Reviewers can prioritize monetization schemes in their reviews and give companies low scores based on severity.

Chocoburger13d ago

This is one of the reasons why I've been focusing more on older games from PS3 & X360 all the way back to the NES.
Rarely can a modern big budget game garner my attention, because its just the same stale concept over and over again. Open world, busy work, grinding, where your job is literally to be a trash collector (constantly picking up endless resources off the ground), the entire industry has been copying Ubi-junk, and I'm just not interested.

Add in the fact that games are clearly releasing in beta form (sometimes very early beta form!), then there's randomized gear you have to pick up and upgrade, then all those boring skill trees to fill in, which is the laziest form of fake game progression imaginable.

Then there's the nasty business model of paying an extra $20 just to play an unfinished game 3 days early. Disgusting behavior, and anyone who supports those companies are actively making our industry worse.

The game industry has never been perfect, but its also never been this bad either.

Tekken 8 Mods Website Receives Infringement Notice From Bandai Namco

A popular Tekken 8 mods website has received a notice of infringement from Bandai Namco, but they're fighting back for the players.

Terry_B15d ago

What Namco is doing here totally sucks.

H915d ago

Namco is even attacking Tekken 7 mod videos

PRIMORDUS15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I torrented the game on PC, and now will post the link right on their twitter account ripping them a new asshole and then say now you can't do shit LOL. Leave modders alone. Sooner or later the way the industry is going I will not buy anything anymore, and just take what I want. I'm buying very little now, as it is. The future does not look good at all.

KwietStorm_BLM15d ago

Daaamn they won't know what to do with themselves

PRIMORDUS15d ago

Nope LOL. The game industry is going to get worse before it gets better. Actually I don't even think it will get better which is the sad part. Even if Bandai does not see that link, by me posting it I can influence people who don't know much about torrenting can now maybe get interested and learn about it. 😁

DivineHand12514d ago

Don't do anything to put yourself at risk.

PRIMORDUS14d ago

But I do this often, 😁 I'm sure companies must be pissed because they know they are helpless with taking down torrents, and maybe I can teach some people how to do it by posting links, they might take an interest LOL

KwietStorm_BLM13d ago

Oh you thought I was being serious. My apologies.

CrimsonWing6915d ago

Why are publishers cracking down on mods all of a sudden? It’s like if you bought a coloring book and then drew over the art and made the art look like something popular. Are the coloring book companies going to pull this sh*t?

Why is industry going more and more full r*tard?

Skuletor15d ago

Why? Because they want to nickel and dime customers with cosmetic microtransactions. It's hard when the modders do a better job then them plus at no extra cost.

TriniOutsider15d ago

A lot of it has to do with copyright infringement. Something similar happened with Little Big Planet back in the day. Where Nintendo wanted created levels pulled from the game because people made almost full blown Mario Levels.

PRIMORDUS15d ago

Just take the games for free on PC. I'm having no respect lately for any game company. ID Software was the best in terms of modding they wanted you to mod their games, total conversions etc. Now we have shit.

CantThinkOfAUsername15d ago

Only a handful of publishers are pro-mods like Bethesda, CDPR, and Larian; the rest either don't care like Sony or anti-mods like Capcom and the extreme being Nintendo-level of BS.

Yi-Long15d ago

They want you to believe their nonsense about development cost being sky-high and taking weeks/months, and then you have unpaid folks who do this all for free as a community-service and just because they enjoy creating and sharing stuff, and they come out with gorgeous new outfits and skins etc etc, within days.

So free mods expose the BS these companies spout in order to justify their excessive greed.

DivineHand12514d ago

I believe this started with Tekken 7 when the Elden Ring mod came out. They were shocked by the quality and gave a warning to stop modding the game because people were coming at them asking how to get those characters in the game.

The modders will have to be strategic.

Absolute stupidity. The hell are they even thinking? Damn, this game was looking so good when it was about to launch. Now, it's just been downhill for everything since then.
