Report: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Budget Was $315 Million, Leaks Reveal

The total budget for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was revealed in the recent Insomniac leaks to be $315 million, the team's most expensive game yet.

Jin_Sakai513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

It’s crazy how expensive AAA games are becoming to make. The game screams quality though so I believe it.

darthv72513d ago

Marvel has loft ambitions for the use of their IP so it should be expected that games would tickle the taint of the movie budgets.

Cockney513d ago

Not sure how much of this is down to marvels "lofty ambitions"
I've no idea of the contract between them but this is all sony's work from creation to publication, insomniacs work here is outstanding and you can see where every penny was spent.

TheKingKratos512d ago (Edited 512d ago )

What marvel got to do with this ?!

Sony's Insomniac is the one who did everything

It's like you look for every opportunity to jab at Sony

Zeref513d ago

Yet it only made 75 million 🤔

513d ago
CrimsonWing69513d ago

That's projected profit based on 10 million sales.

If you look up current sales it's 5 million. It's made a profit... so I don't get the comment. Like, you're surprised that it can make 75 million in profit?

Did you also look at Return on Investment (ROI)?

P_Bomb513d ago

It just came out. The Spidey games have had long legs.

Einhander1972513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

So, Spider-Man which was their most expensive project which had only been on the market a few weeks has already paid back it's development costs and made nearly 1/3 of it's cost to develop in profits already...

Sounds good to me...

Do you think Redfall made back it's dev costs, how about Forza, has Starfield even made back it's 6+ year dev cycle costs yet?

Ya know, pretty much all this leak actually shows what a strong position Sony/Insomniac are actually in.

Lightning77513d ago

Not sure why ppl are downvoting. It says it only made 75 million as of right now. The game has long legs so it'll make way more than that, it's only been a few months.

Zeref513d ago

I meant to say it's "projected" to make 75 million. Which is worse 💀

513d ago
DivineHand125513d ago

The game will likely sell at $70 throughout the holidays going into next year.

Hofstaderman513d ago

Are the mathematical analytic skills of all MS ambassadors so warped from their spinning around engagement? Please check your numbers in context again geniuses.

elazz513d ago

That’s profit. Not revenue. So income you keep after deducting costs.

And they are also very conservative in projections. Spider man sold 25 million copies. No reason why this shouldn’t do the same within tbe next few years

Chevalier513d ago

Last game sold 34 million and this projection is only for 10 million sales so you're idiotic comment is not going to age very well. Unless your some kind of idiot that thinks arguably the most popular comic character in the world is not going to sell. Lol

TheKingKratos512d ago

You are a dumb person... No in fact every single xbot like you is going around with no brain cells.

Christopher513d ago

I mean, that includes marketing, and that's actually pretty normal for major AAA releases today IMHO.

thorstein513d ago

Marketing? The marketing department's budget is separate and set at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Their budget covers all games released.

blackblades513d ago

Yeah, its a reason why the price of games went to $70. Also the time it takes to make them is long. Hopefully one day the cost and time can go down.

AdonisIsBeast513d ago

Eonjay513d ago

I mean this is beyond even the max price Microsoft would have paid for GP content. This is just further proof why Sony wouldn't want to put games on their SUB day one.

Ironmike513d ago

Spiderman 2 is not outstanding it's a good game but its very similar to 1st go on sites like reddit loads of players who bought saying the same ii loved it personally but it's not an outstanding game it's vet good one though

gold_drake513d ago

i just had a stroke reading that.

no punctuation, no comma, just a a very long sentence haha.

Ironmike513d ago

Don't worry about mt I don't

Cockney513d ago

The clues in the name mate, nobody bought spiderman 2 hoping it was different, more of the same but bigger and better and that's what they gave us.

Chocoburger513d ago

"The clues in the name mate"

😂 Thanks for the laugh! 🤣

Ironmike513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

I agree and iam loving it and to be truthful its most games haven't really blew me away this gen apart from horizon fb West

maniacmayhem513d ago

These budgets are insane and it's no wonder why developers are sticking with sequels or characters based on recognizable IPs.

This is why Square always puts out bizarre statements of games not meeting expectations because they more than likely didn't.

There has to be a better way to bring in the cost of games without sacrificing the scale and graphic quality we all expect with each new generation.

I personally don't see see how it can be done anytime soon but if this keeps up you're definitely going to see a lot less new IPs, GaaS models and more devs getting bought.

Shane Kim513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

I don't think that's what costs. I think it's overpriced actors, executives, marketing and in this case a licensing fee.

ChasterMies513d ago

So 4.5M copies to break even and the rest is profit.

Fishy Fingers513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

It isn't.

Even the table in the article shows that. $38 per copy, 8.2m to break even.

BeHunted513d ago (Edited 513d ago )

Nope. From the recent leaks Sony pays Disney Royalties for each copy sold.

Marvel Royalties

Digital Games: 9% to 18% of net sales
Physical Games: 19% to 26% of net sales
DLC: 19% to 26% of net sales
Hardware Bundle: 35% to 50% of Wholesale Bundle Price

It would take more than 4.5million copies sold to break even. No wonder Microsoft refused the Offer....

Chevalier513d ago

Weird Spiderman sold 30 million copies. Which Xbox exclusive did 30 million in sales in the last decade?! Oh right absolutely none.

"No wonder Microsoft refused the Offer...."

You want to bet they're paying the same or more for Blade? Which guaranteed won't even come close to Spiderman

__SteakDeck__512d ago (Edited 512d ago )

@BeHunted No, No, No. Don’t cope fanboy. MS rejected the offer because they had no studios at the time to make a Marvel game. MS like Sony was offered any Marvel character. They didn’t need to pick SM. Remember MS is making an Indiana Jones game and a Blade game. Since it’s going straight to a subscription service as an exclusive, I’m sure MS has to pay Disney double.

Jesus Christ man...Unbelievable!

I can´t believe that Playstation Studios can´t manage to develop and deliver ONE single successful high quality first party LS game throughout the whole current generation!

Hermen Hulst needs to be fired ASAP! He´s Jimbo 2.0!

7h ago
S2Killinit5h ago

Sure buddy. Don’t forget, we have everything you have, but more. 😝

5j1mk4h ago

But you pay $80 for it, we don’t 😉

And you still don’t have everything we have.

But you admit the main reason to buy a PS5 is Xbox games? Good. We’re on the same page. Sony first party is dead and worthless.

Lightning774h ago

Can you stop the fanboying for 2 seconds? Seriously this deflecting and ignoring everything that's going on with Sony's first party the past few years is frustrating and ignorant. You know there's others who have a PS also and want Sony's best like we use to get right? Stop trying to ruin it for everyone else with side steps. Not this BS deflecting that you ppl constantly do.

Besides HD what other LS game thrived so far? Has Herman made good buissness choices and decisions when it comes to LS yes or no?

Start questioning PS Studios.

S2Killinit2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

@Lightning
Fanboy? You talking about me, or yourself? We got alt guy over here with his brand new account burning up from rage, and you are asking me stop “fan boying”?

Sony have at least 3 first party heavy hitters coming up, that we know of, and its not like we are lacking in exclusives department.

As to LS, they had Helldivers, and GT7, both were resounding success. They had a complete flop in concord. Not sure why you think we need to be concerned. They are destroying the competition and that market share translates to games.

Lightning772h ago

"Fanboy? You talking about me, or yourself?"

What's are you talking about how am I a fanboy? Those alt counts will be gone nobody will see them anyway.

I wouldn't call Marathon a heavy hitter and Yotei yes definitely. However they do have DS2 I just feel like there should be more. We all know why there isn't more.

They only have two LS HD as I mentioned and I totally forgot about Grand Turismo. Only 2 While canceling Twisted Metal and Spiderman LS. Who knows the quality at least those games sound compelling.

Btw MLB isn't a live service its a Yearly released sports game.

DodoDojo12m ago

Only one LS flop? Were just going to ignore all the canceled LS games that were in development for years? Ok then.

Reaper22_7m ago

More? Oh, you must mean Concord.🤭

Lightning777h ago

Yeah hate to break it to you Sony but I think they need to shelve their LS efforts almost all together. They formed LFG ex Bungie guys and making another LS but I don't have much hope for it anymore. Marathon is quickly getting overshadowed by Arch Raiders, We all know what happened to Concord.

Only solution I can think of is have 3rd party like a Arrowhead make them a LS game. Speaking of AH their next project is completely funded by them so it won't be from them. I just think it's a good idea that they seek a 3rd party for LS. They'll save time, money and won't take time away their SP efforts. Which is suffering immensely this gen due to all this LS.

S2Killinit5h ago

Wait we are writing off games that arent even out yet?

5j1mk4h ago

lol, like there’s anything about Marathon and Fairgames that instills confidence 😂🤭

Lightning773h ago(Edited 3h ago)

It might come out it might not. Sony said they're still pushing the project. That's a good thing. Even if it does come out will it be any good? There's too many questions and hurdles surrounding the LS.

Bigger question when are we gonna see it? Will they have a PS showcase or State Of Play? Grubb said Sony was debating whether to have a showcase, SOP or anything.

I sure hope they have a showcase or something in the coming weeks. I want Sony first party and their teams not just Xbox events and shows basically saving the damn day at this point.

Of all the companies it's freakin Xbox that's doing it. Who'd a thought.

S2Killinit2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Look at alt guy with 3 comments history over here.

Desperate.

Sonyslave36h ago

Live services games are hard to make & and even harder to make if you trying to create an original game.

Just copy and past succesful gaas or gacha games with their anime license they can easy make a overwatch or geshin impact clone.
