Apple Arcade Gets Massive 40% Price Hike Effective Immediately

Apple just announced a price hike for its popular Apple Arcade service effective immediately, and it's proportionally a rather sizable increase. The new price is $6.99 a month, meaning a 40% increase over the previous $4.99.
The price hike for Apple Arcade was accompanied by similar increases for other subscription services by the company. For instance, Apple TV was increased from $6.99 to $9.99.

These companies still acting like we’re in a pandemic. What’s the excuse now?

jaykakade588d ago

sole agenda of profit maximization.

gold_drake588d ago

the issue is, that the minute they did it during the pandemic, they just stayed on that course and we are treated like dirt again.

profit is what they all want. scum.

Vits588d ago

I think this is the second price hike in 4 years. Now it's double the price of release which is pretty bad all in itself, but made worse by the fact that the service has not been pumping out good stuff lately. The crown jewel is still Fantasian from 2021 and a lot of the other big hitters got ported to PC/Console already.

FinalFantasyFanatic588d ago

I wonder what happened to that Fantasian PC rumor, I hope that's still in the works, I'm not buying Apple Arcade just for that.

crazyCoconuts588d ago

Virtually every company is raising prices for virtually everything.
Either every company is somehow evil and can raise prices without regard for competition,
OR
We're experiencing inflation.

FinalFantasyFanatic588d ago

I feel like it's a little bit of inflation, but a lot of profiteering as well, I also feel like that profiteering is feeding to inflation and making it worse as well.

crazyCoconuts588d ago

In a free market, when you raise prices you lose customers either due to exceeding the price elasticity or competition. Like, in this case customers could just buy games outright or get free to play games.
If people continue to pay the increased prices it's because they feel it's a fair value. "Profiteering" as a concept outside of like a monopolistic situation doesn't even make sense to me.

gerbintosh588d ago (Edited 588d ago )

It's like drugs. The dealer gives people a taste for free or a reduced price. Once they are hooked the dealer jacks up the price. The addicts will pay because they can't live without it

gold_drake588d ago

WHAT

to be fair tho, who plays apple arcade anyways. but damn, 40% is alot.

RupeeHoarder588d ago

Everything went up from Apple - Arcade, TV+, News as well as the One Plans that include them all and family plans. Subscription services are going to outpace cable etc. before we know it.

marioJP87588d ago

A company who will never get tired of greed!!!! 🤦🏽‍♂️

ChasterMies588d ago

$2 is not a “massive” price hike. But I do think people are going to push back against subscription services and especially subscription software.

FinalFantasyFanatic588d ago

I avoid subscriptions where possible, but I can also drop quite a few of them as most aren't giving me the value I pay for. It's bull crap when you need a subscription for software like Photoshop, Microsoft Office, ect... It's the reason I haven't upgraded Clip Studio, I bought it already, I'm not paying for a subscription version.

ChasterMies588d ago

There are a lot of old computers still going because they have a working copy of Photoshop installed.

PunksOnN4G588d ago

Insane that every sub is sky rocketing with insane amount of ads like I'm watching cable now. YouTube is even worse now with the new ad system inget an ad on every video No matter the length. Crazy thing is TV cable wnlentnup double digi for the first time in awhile and I can see it going higher with all these subs costing so much with ad to lol

Exclusive Sonic Dream Team Game Announced for Apple Arcade

Sonic Dream Team, the new 3D action-adventure Sonic the Hedgehog game, exclusively makes its way to Apple Arcade.

phoenixwing582d ago

Well darn. I've been wanting a sonic adventure and Sega just makes it exclusive to Apple. A hole move sega.

ZycoFox581d ago

It does kind of look like that, but I'd wait for more video first for confirmation.

Apple obviously paid for exclusivity. Imagine playing a game like this on a touchscreen tho.. No thanks.

Vits581d ago (Edited 581d ago )

They haven't confirmed support to controllers yet. But a lot of Apple Arcade can be played with one and the cheapest/best entry point is the $140 Apple TV 4K.

Don't think it's worth it just for playing Sonic, but if you are also in business for a TV Box. It is a very solid option and rather on the cheap side, weirdly enough.

XiNatsuDragnel582d ago

Sega d move guys make it console and pc too we'll play fr. You can make $20 or f2p and I'll join in.

phoenixwing582d ago

I would have paid 60 or 70 for it but I'm not about to buy into apple over it

-Foxtrot581d ago

I find it funny this looks more Sonic like in art, colours etc than Frontiers

CrimsonWing69581d ago

Well, if that's the case I won't b playing it. Good luck to you on this one, Sega.

crazyCoconuts731d ago

Yeah clearly not designed primally for gaming

kickerz731d ago

Whatever happened to Microsofts Augmented reality glasses? That came out years ago and no one really cared lol. I guess that tech is pretty cool. Not $3500 cool though.

kneon731d ago

Hololens was never going to live up to the hype. I've used them quite a bit when I was working in VR and they are interesting, but getting a clear consistent image in AR glasses is probably impossible. The only way is to design it like a vr headset but with a camera so you can overlay on top of the captured video stream.

Extermin8or3_730d ago

Microsoft cancelled it completely recently and laid off pretty much everyone involved in its development.

Extermin8or3_730d ago

Yeah and yet it costs almost 4k loool

OneLove730d ago

Extermin8or3_ a quick Google search says they haven't canceled it lmao wtf you on?

Bobertt730d ago

Also it's $3500 so overpriced as usual from Apple. Maybe in 5-10 years it will be worth it.

Eonjay731d ago

The "PSVR2 is too expensive" articles died that day.

JEECE731d ago

Except everyone writing those articles probably spends over $1000 on apple products every year anyway, so I'm sure "the apple quality is worth it."

Umb731d ago

The way I see it, the price is justifiable in Apples eye's is because there's the 'PRO' word attached to the product.

That there is an automatic extra $1000!!!

StormSnooper731d ago (Edited 731d ago )

the crazy thing about the "PSVR2 too expensive" articles is that they did not even make mathematical sense. They were comparing apples to oranges.

DarXyde731d ago

Yeah.

You won't see my defending Apple and their crazy price points, but I do have a MacBook Pro and I think it's worth it for the sheer productivity value and app suite (I mainly do research, but I also write/publish, do project management, and data analysis). Idk, it just works for my work.

Do I hate their outlandish prices? Yep! They're good and well out of their minds.

VariantAEC725d ago

@StormSnooper
More accurately, they were comparing Apple's to PlayStation's.

This is the same company that charges you $700 for a set of fucking wheels

https://www.apple.com/shop/...

The last time I gave Apple any money was for an Apple ][, and that will be the last time

bloop731d ago

@kneon: Jesus H Christ that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Eidolon731d ago

What'd you expect from Apple. they sell a monitor stand for $1000.

fr0sty731d ago

$3499 and it won't fit over your glasses, so you'll have to fork over even more for special lenses.

Profchaos730d ago

A products value and worth is subjective a 100k tractor seems pointless to a office worker.

But in this instance Apple has been sniffing their own farts again

DarXyde730d ago

Unfortunately, I doubt that.

Never underestimate their enthusiasts. They'll likely make a killing in San Francisco, Denver, and New York City alone.

roadkillers730d ago

At $3500, will any store stock it? The most returned item to Best Buy has to be the VR headsets..

sparky77731d ago

I will wait until the non pro version releases for $1000 but this would be good for someone who doesn't own a Mac or a TV and is likely the only way VR/AR ever become mainstream.

DOMination-731d ago

Honestly the Vision Pro was never intended to be a mass-market consumer product.

This is more aimed at developers but with the long-term goal of eventually getting the form factor down to a pair of regular looking glasses. As someone with not the best eyes, the health features being touted down the road, automatic lens adjustment and of course advances in AR tech means I'm interested in that end product. Unfortunately, even for Apple, that's probably a decade away.

Having another player in the market will hopefully encourage everyone to push on with this tech to get to that end goal. It has the potential to be as important as the smartphone.

Grilla731d ago

It’s about the apps also, by the time it goes mainstream it’ll have a decent library of apps ready to go.

Profchaos730d ago (Edited 730d ago )

I'd understand that argument if they showed it off in a work environment similar to the hololense but this was basically hey look you can play games and see your photos and watch it on a plane while looking like a total tool we know you want it because we put a logo on it.

If the product isn't picked up by a market segment it will die then all these ideas will never trickle down to an affordable price point.

DOMination-730d ago

"It’s about the apps also, by the time it goes mainstream it’ll have a decent library of apps ready to go."

Yes exactly , hence why it was announced at the WorldWide Developers Conference. This is a stepping stone to releasing something far more consumer friendly in future. And during that transition, they get to work with third parties to build into their ecosystem.

"I'd understand that argument if they showed it off in a work environment similar to the hololense"

HoloLens journey actually went the other way imo. It started off with big ideals of being a big consumer product before Microsoft established what most others have - it's a cool bit of tech that doesn't really solve problems that the majority of people have. It was even shown at E3, not once but twice to demonstrate games. Then it was put on the same shelf as Illumiroom, never to be seen again.

shadowT731d ago

they said psvr 2 is too expensive

Jin_Sakai731d ago

PSVR2 isn’t AR, is tethered to a console, doesn’t have Micro OLED, doesn’t have dedicated audio, has lower resolution, isn’t as bright, and most importantly is a mass market product in which the Vision Pro is not.

mkis007731d ago

I mean you get what you pay for with psvr2 though...With apple that's never a sure thing...see wheels for $700 and stand for $1000.

1Victor730d ago

@jin: “PSVR2 isn’t AR, is tethered to a console”

Did you missed the presentation and just skip to the psvr2 attack mode?🤷🏿
The device is tether to a power line or you could buy their power bank for a 2 hours “roaming free”

AngainorG7X730d ago

@Jin
Vision Pro is AR, don’t bother, they don’t get it

DOMination-730d ago

"Did you missed the presentation and just skip to the psvr2 attack mode?🤷🏿

Sorry, I don't want to come across as aggressive but that's missing the point entirely. The Vision Pro has both M2 and R1 Apple silicon chips inside. It IS the computer. It runs everything natively. PSVR2 is a completely different type of device. Just because they are worn on your head, doesn't mean they should be compared. If you can't understand the difference in price, then you are the one who needs to watch the presentation again.

Most expensive potential gaming rig ever.

Anomander730d ago

Except name a big time Apple Game you that have to play and tell me it’s worth $3500? Apple is great at launching new product lines and getting Mass adaptation. The problem with this is I think they priced themselves out and it’s not consumer ready.
