Xbox Could Become Irrelevant If It Doesn't Thrive In Mobile, Phil Spencer Says

Mobile is the biggest platform for games on Earth, and Microsoft needs to find success there, Spencer says.

Microsoft knows Xbox is irrelevant. It’s all about subscription services and mobile going forward.

Eonjay610d ago

It's almost as if Microsoft is just looking for reasons to get rid of their console.

Wintersun616611d ago

Exactly. I was considering trying Starfield at one point, but I saw what it is from some streams and couldn't care less. If this is the best they can offer once in a decade, then I can do just fine without them. Also there's the moral side that makes me shy away from supporting them in any way, with all that's happened in the last decade.

GhostScholar611d ago

Lolol yeah because PlayStation doesn’t have one of those.

Crows90611d ago

A focus on mobile? Nope it doesn't.

Never complaining about Ms and then being ungrateful of those that pushed Ms into the action they now enjoy

The only thing keeping Xbox relevant now is daddys wallet.

BillyCrystals611d ago

No, Phil deserves all the credit. He’s a business genius and his bomber jacket collection is unrivaled.

610d ago
GhostScholar611d ago

Actually xbox is profitable. The people on here that are immersed in the fanboyism don’t realize that but it is what it is. Once again it amazes me how Sony is so great (which it is) but the so called fans hate Xbox more than they love PlayStation. It’s so weird.

MrDead610d ago

Not profitable enough, hence all the "we are leaving in 2027 if we don't get all the moneys" talk... also why are you bringing up Sony? Leave the fanboying somewhere else.

610d ago
GhostScholar610d ago

@Mrdead me leave the fanboying? Pot meet kettle. I have a ps5, Xbox, and switch. Exactly who am I a fanboy of?

Nacho_Z610d ago

GhostScholar

After glancing at your comments I can answer that for you, it's Xbox. You're a fanboy for Xbox. This quote from yourself might help clarify "I’m an Xbox primary player abs always have been".

Happy to help.

MrDead610d ago (Edited 610d ago )

@Ghost, you fanboy for Xbox... you told us that.

Pot kettle? Who do I fanboy for, am I in Nintendo comments or PS comment posts defending or fanboying? Appart form a small bias over Nvidia and AMD my interests are for the industry and right now MS is looking to wreck it through greed

It'll become irrelevant if it doesn't produce more original Ip imo.

ABizzel1612d ago

We've seen what their developers have produced so far this generation, and outside of the studios that were literally recently purchased it's been rough for Xbox first party.

DOMination-611d ago

I disagree. Sony and Nintendo don't produce many original IP and they are relevant just fine.

MS have produced plenty new IP anyway so not sure that statement is even correct - Redfall, Starfield, Pentiment, Grounded, HiFi Rush, As Dusk Falls. Plus plenty more on the horizon.

That isn't the problem at all imo

The Wood611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

........ theres always 1 multiverser

its NOT you........ but ill expect to see one in here real soon

ApocalypseShadow611d ago

Microsoft created none of that. They purchased that from games already being made. Don't lie. Context.

DOMination-611d ago

@ApocalypseShadow Your point isn't without merit. However, they are semantics so where do you draw the line? Are you only applying that rule to the games in development at the time of acquisition and all future games will be "true MS" games? Or will you always treat them as not "counting"? Do you apply the same rules to Sony studios because most of them were acquired too? Do you for instance not count Spider-Man as a true Sony game because Insomniac were acquired not long before? Same with Infamous..? Same deal iirc.

What about Demon's Souls and (ironically for this topic, Sony's only real proper new IP this generation) Returnal? They weren't even first party studios at the time of release so do they "count" as true Sony games?

In my view, the point about "original IP" is demonstrably false. I just think the reason for their irrelevance is more down to those acquisitions coming ten years too late, the quality of the games not being anywhere near good enough, complete and utter mis-management of studios from Matt Booty and Phil and also they have probably misread the room on the industry being ready for digital and Game Pass.

RupeeHoarder611d ago

MS have produced plenty new IP anyway so not sure that statement is even correct - Redfall, Starfield, Pentiment, Grounded, HiFi Rush, As Dusk Falls. Plus plenty more on the horizon.

This is a joke right? Tell me this is a joke. I'm not sure it even needs explanation.

Samonuske610d ago

Lol you really thought you did something, nobody claims Spider-Man is an original IP so don’t straw man that into the discussion. Games like inFamous, Demon’s Soul’s count because unlike with Microsoft those games weren’t in development till they were pitched to Sony and given the funding and budget to actually make them. Microsoft came in mid development to projects already in the works and claims credit for those projects existing. Think about it they’re not even close to being the same situation. Same with Death Stranding, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, doesn’t even matter if Sony owned those studios or not, these games wouldn’t exist the way they do without Sony believing in the projects and funding them.

This guy is just running around gaslighting people into thinking Xbox is doomed unless they support Game Pass and now mobile. Squat about just putting out great games or following up on that claim that they want to put more games on more platforms talk when they are trying to buy publishers.

Stop listening to executives and stop interviewing them. What they say is as valuable as a paid off politician, their end goals are already decided by the people who pay their checks and not what the community wants.

You forget, according to Phil Spencer on the subject of making great games to improve their appeal "we're not interested in that, that's not how it works"

Obscure_Observer612d ago

You fell for some clickbait bs article.

The original quote:

"I am really looking forward to learning on mobile. The truth of the matter is, if you're going to continue to be relevant in gaming at a global scale, you're going to have to find a way to be relevant on the largest platform, which is mobile,"

Gamespot´s bs headline:

"Xbox Could Become Irrelevant If It Doesn't Thrive In Mobile, Phil Spencer Say"

Phil is talking about the gaming market as a whole and how *gaming companies* should be looking at the Mobile market to continue to be relevant in the future.

Is he wrong?

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/0...

https://gritdaily.com/sony-...

Both Sony and MS are looking into the Mobile market but neither are making it their main focus.

GamingSinceForever611d ago

MS has shown us their way to remain relevant and that is to buy what is already big. Why build a King when you can literally buy it? 🤷🏾‍♂️

Want to dominate consoles/hand-helds? No problem. Let’s buy Nintendo. 🤷🏾‍♂️

This is who they are.

Petebloodyonion611d ago (Edited 611d ago )

@GamingSinceForever
" Why build a King when you can literally buy it?"

Let me answer your question with similar questions

Why build a Final Fantasy or a Streetfighter when you can make sure that the other brand doesn't have access to it?

Actually, why build AAA games like Silent Hill, Deadloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, and Forspoken when you can make sure they are not playable for a certain time on other platforms?

And why build a COD when you can make sure that some modes are locked on other platforms?

ApocalypseShadow611d ago

Yeah Pete. And Microsoft were the ones who initiated that. You seem to forget the Xbox 360 days of buying exclusivity of games or DLC and locking it from other platforms. But you want to act like Sony started it. No, Sony gave Microsoft their own medicine. They could have easily paid for FF exclusivity. Or pay to make SF. Tell the truth.

610d ago
Petebloodyonion610d ago

@Shadow
Was MS around PS1?
Still waiting for my Tomb Raider 2...

Still, your answer doesn't answer my question initially of why produce great games when you can also prevent others from playing them on parity level content-wise or at the same time (if not at all).

JackBNimble610d ago

Phil Spencer really needs to stop talking because he isn't helping his brand especially after the RedFall debacle.

okay... so then if that is what he is trying to do, then it must mean XB is perfectly fine and nobody needs to worry.

Though would you still say not to listen if he was all smiles and saying everything is rosie and things have never been better???

*** Though would you still say not to listen if he was all smiles and saying everything is rosie and things have never been better??? ***

Read my comment. I said what I said and I mean it. And I didn't just make it about Phil for that portion of my comment. Stop listening to executives. Only pay attention to the result, not the words.

neutralgamer1992611d ago

Exact this but if you ever want to feel nauseated just go read some of the tweets at him and how much Xbox fanboys praise him. To them he has done perfect job and saved Xbox and now they want MS to buy more publishers because it means getting games on GP day one

Yoshida claims PS believes Xbox is their only competitor, truth is they don’t have one any more

Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida claims PlayStation still believes Xbox is their only true competitor, not Nintendo.

True, they have pretty different audiences..and some People just have both at home or a PS and a PC that emulates more or less everything from Nintendo.

Knightofelemia3d ago

Xbox hasn't been a competitor since the XB360. Last generation and this generation Sony has been running circles around Xbox. As for Sony vs Nintendo Sony runs circles yes but I don't really see Nintendo as competition. Nintendo does their own thing and it works.

Lightning773d ago

Details are important. Console sales yes. Overall games Xbox seems to be doing fairly well in that department.

LoveSpuds2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

MS were doing so well that they had to start selling their games on their main competitors system which in turn results in around 30% of each sale going to Sony as the platform holder.

I do think tjat MS' fortunes will improve now that they are actually selling games rather than giving them away for pennies on the dollar.

Something that occurs to me is that the more success MS published games have elsewhere, the more stark it will become that selling games is much more profitable than renting them. If that becomes highly noticable, I wonder what the shareholders (who ultimately run the show) will make of a service which has stagnated for years?

crazyCoconuts2d ago

PlayStation doesn't compete with third party games, they compete on consoles. They profit from third party games. If you're not comparing consoles there's no point in comparing.

drivxr3d ago

Console wars are over.

Eventually, everyone else will catch up to this fact.

attilayavuzer3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I think it's all PS fans have left at this point. Console wars were always a competition for fourth place behind Nintendo, PC and mobile. If Xbox evaporates into a hybrid virtual platform, then PS will be perennially left in last place.

Christopher3d ago

Strange, I recall all those FCC documents and witness testimonies saying the exact opposite... Guess Microsoft doesn't know what it's talking about?

PanicMechanic2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Great analysis. Just joking.

Pretending like companies give a f about where they “rank” against each other is just super retarded. This isn’t the World Cup.

Tell me, how does “PC” compete against a brand like PlayStation? It just doesn’t make sense at all. What you just said, is complete and utter nonsense

BlaqMagiq12d ago

I don't think PS cares about being in this so-called "last place" you came up with when they're making profits hand over fist.

microsoft wanted to crush sony into dust and they had the money to do it, but with such weak leadership it was always going to fail

Reaper22_3d ago

Had the money? They still have the money but the industry has changed since xbox 360. Microsoft is the number one publisher in gaming. I'd hardly call that failing.

IRetrouk3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The industry hasn't changed though, just ms, Microsoft was the no1 publisher for a month in december 2024, the actual no1 for fy2024 was tencent if game sales are all that's being counted.

Money doesn't mean you'll be successful large corporations have entered and failed before like Nec
