Starfield was 'made to be played for a long time,' but I'm already drifting away

Bethesda's biggest RPG wound up feeling a lot smaller than its earlier ones.

Vengeance1138222d ago

Still not an excuse for artificially making player progress a snail's pace grind fest. Every moment to moment gameplay segment should matter.
This is just more from Todd "excuse maker" Howard. Todd "It just works" Howard.

Lightning77222d ago

If he's drifting away after month today then the game did its job. DLC is still yet to release along with additional content. This is only the launch phase of SF just like ES and Fall Out.

Btw I keep hearing something about SF is a LS game? It's definitely 100% not a LS game. Never once pitched as such and it literally can't be LS is always online MP experience. I dont know who or why someone on here made that crap up but I'm not surprised someone would.

"If he's drifting away after month today then the game did its job"

lol

Exactly! One month later and he is "already" drifting away.

Not to mention that Bozo is the same person who gave Starfield a 7.5 score. Couldn´t stop playing it ever since. Probably spent more than 400 hours into the game.

Certainly another hypocrite that will most definitely come back to Shattered Space. He said that himself.

shinoff2183222d ago

I put 70 80 hours into ff 16 and I'd give it a 7.5 8. That don't make a difference. Starfield for me needs a couple updates. I'll wait on those while I play some other rpgs.

Profchaos221d ago

Bozo that gave it 7.5 that's a bit rough alot of places have it worse

InUrFoxHole221d ago

Needs an update? Are we talking to patch fixes or are saying it needs more content? Because I find the second one laughable.

Obscure_Observer221d ago

@InUrFoxHole

"Needs an update? Are we talking to patch fixes or are saying it needs more content? Because I find the second one laughable."

Exactly! Dude´s want/need more content ASAP! He finished the game 4-5 times and still couldn´t have it enough. He sounds depressed. Dude really don´t want to leave. Lol

shinoff2183

"I put 70 80 hours into ff 16 and I'd give it a 7.5 8."

That´s ok. Call me when you find the time (and interest) to go back to FFXVI and went to several new game+ playthroughs and beat that game 4 or 5 times, like this dude did with Starfield.

After all that, don´t mind me if say that your 7.5 don´t reflect the time and interest that you invested in that game with so many amazing games to play.

So if someone plays a game for a long time, that automatically means they must think the game is great? I've played many average games for lots of hours over the years. That doesn't mean I think they're all great games or deserve 9s and 10s. For exaple Fallout 4 is an average 8 at best and still I've played it for over 400 hours across PS and PC. Also a huge game like Starfield requires lots of play time to be reviewed fairly. If you only play it for 20 hours you don't get so many chances to see the same but slightly altered locations over and over again.

Are you really that mad at someone for scoring it 7.5? Calm down dude that's probably a completely reasonable score for this game.

jwillj2k4221d ago

Well according to the devs it’s mandatory to spend at least 200 hours just to start liking the game.

jwillj2k4221d ago (Edited 221d ago )

You say he spent 400 hours playing it in this post. Then you say he’s beaten the game 5 times in your other post. Well that’s 80 hours a playthrough which is less than the dev team requirement of 200 mandatory hours before finding something to like about the game. Meaning he’s played through the game multiple times in hopes to find some type of enjoyment but has found nothing according the dev teams mandatory 200hr enjoyment requirement. I’d be tired too.

Crows90221d ago

The game is average. People play average games. Doesn't make them less average.

"For exaple Fallout 4 is an average 8 at best and still I've played it for over 400 hours across PS and PC."

No sure if anyone told you but *8* stands for GREAT game! If you´d spent 400 hours of your life playing a single game, it´s obvious that you were having a GREAT time it.

"Are you really that mad at someone for scoring it 7.5?"

No really, to me its clear that Bozo from PC Gamer just wanted some free clicks over Starfield. No really different from idiots claiming Starfield is bad but never actually play it.

And there´s some butthurt people form channels that ain´t got review codes and now are on some personal crusade against Bethesda.

"Calm down dude that's probably a completely reasonable score for this game."

You won´t known. Still whatever makes your light shine.

"No sure if anyone told you but *8* stands for GREAT game! If you´d spent 400 hours of your life playing a single game, it´s obvious that you were having a GREAT time it."

People have different opinions about review scores and it's pointless to debate what an 8 means. And how would you know how I enjoyed the game? Sometimes I was bored doing the same-y "help this settlement" missions, other times I was struggling with the obviously unpolished settlement building, the gameplay mechanics and VATS felt like they were 10 years old, I was slightly upset about the dumbed down RPG elements, I was not very impressed with the armor and weapon customization, it could've been so much better. Thank goodness at least that was fixed by mods. The thing is I can sometimes be quite the completionist and I don't often give up on a game. And I didn't play it again on PC after PS because it was so great, but because I wanted to see how much better it would be with all the mods on PC. It was a lot better but some problems were rooted in the very foundations of the game and couldn't be helped. Actually now that I think about it, if I were to review F4, I wouldn't give it more than a 7.

"No really, to me its clear that Bozo from PC Gamer just wanted some free clicks over Starfield. No really different from idiots claiming Starfield is bad but never actually play it."

I don't get it, you say 8 is great, but reviewing it 7.5 is click bait?

"And there´s some butthurt people form channels that ain´t got review codes and now are on some personal crusade against Bethesda."

Is this crusade in the room right now?

"You won´t known. Still whatever makes your light shine."

That's why I said probably. It seems to be in line with what I've seen and heard of the game. Just an educated guess of the ballpark where I think I would end up scoring this game.

some people like me force our way to finish the game

Flawlessmic221d ago

I drifted after 40-50 hrs, still haven't finished the main story line either.

I'll wait for some updates to come through then go back to it, but for now it's forza then SM2 and AW2 ohh and mario wonder

__SteakDeck__221d ago

Damn. It seems Starfield didn’t live up to your expectations. I remember earlier this year you said Starfield was your most anticipated game.

Flawlessmic221d ago

Nope, and neither is forza atm.

Both good games but far from what they were promised to be let alone better than what's come before them.

Anyways atleast it's given me plenty to play and tide me over until some of the other big releases still to come this year.

SyntheticForm221d ago

As did I.

I was enjoying it, but the loading and overall structure is such a turn off. It's also loaded with woke rubbish throughout.

Crows90221d ago

Glad im not the only one who noticed. Its do dumb. I hate lazy dialogues and starfield has a lot of that throughout. I enjoyed it for about 4-5 hrs. Then I realized...another glorified fetch quest??? At that point I understood that perhaps the main story would do it for me....but it didnt.

I dont expect to come back to this game ever again. Which is a shame. thankfully cyberpunk 2077 exists.

UltimateOwnage221d ago

I’m almost there too after 47 hours. And I don’t expect to return as often over the years as I have with Skyrim on every major platform since the PS3. The RNG aspect is too predictable and the fast travel / loading all the time breaks up an already somewhat barren and slow paced walking experience. It’s a good game but it’s just not up to Bethesda’s typical experience “density” IMO, and that’s left me kind of bored of hoarding and rinse/repeating.

ocelot07221d ago

I gave up may return in a year or so. I just can't get into it at all.

Starfield's new Xbox performance modes are thoughtful and comprehensive

Digital Foundry : Bethesda's Starfield was generally a well-regarded RPG, but the game's 30fps target on consoles was the subject of some controversy. The game's massive scope arguably justified that 30fps refresh rate, with only high-end PCs capable of hitting 60fps and higher, but now Bethesda has changed course and opened the floodgates on Xbox Series X consoles following significant optimisation work. Players can now independently select performance and visuals modes at arbitrary frame-rates. How exactly do these new combinations fare, and is 60fps really a possibility after it was explicitly ruled out before?

900p in performance mode for SX.... I'd assume a 5pro would at least hit 1080p if not more.

jwillj2k439m ago

It’s a point, click and load game. Stop with all the massive scale bullshit. Only thing massive is the number of junk items they decided to throw in the game.

It will never be running as expected, because these fixes are mostly for the compensation of the series s lol. The games legit compromised Already.

Monkeycan88h ago

Which is why I am waiting for the PS5 version.

JEECE6h ago

There will probably be a PS5 version announced within the next year, but don't expect it to magically fix all the games underlying problems.

Rockstar5h ago

...This is Bethesda we're talking about

Tacoboto7h ago

Gotta hand it to Bethesda.

One way to avoid laying off QA staff is to just not have any at all!

Goosejuice7h ago

Why have QA when modders fix ur game for u

Flakegriffin7h ago

Didn’t the modding community give up on Starfield shortly after launch?

Goosejuice7h ago

I really tried to get into this game as I love Bethesda games. Put 40 hours into and even bought the 100$ edition...but this game just isn't good. It's an ok title at best. Dosnt have any of the charm that elder scrolls or fallout has. It's incredible how bland this game is despite having the opportunity to create a whole new universe..literally, and they give us this mostly human universe with the same things to do over n over just on a different named planet.

They had such a huge opportunity to give us this incredible universe akin to star wars and instead made it bland af. It saddens me a bit cuz I truly tried, and i love Bethesda open worlds. Maybe shattered sky's helps? Idk. To me the core of the game is just not good. The only thing I truly liked was the ship building.

shinoff21834h ago

This is about where I'm at. They never built onto it within the game. The lore sucked. Where as elder scrolls and fallout you find notes, books, and computers to read and what not. It adds to the game tremendously as far as lore. It couldn't immerse me like the the other 2 series. Maps and exploration lacked. Those are my only issues with the game. Unfortunately I don't think they will ever give a fk about the lore.
