Never forget MS has paid an almost combined $80 billion not on creating games, but to remove them from competition. This will not end with just banning Sony gamers from the publishers MS consumes, the future is less choice for us the consumer.

TriniOutsider263d ago

People will be okay with such things. Because there are people out there who hate competition from the other two sides. Especially the Sony/Playstation brand.

MrDead263d ago

Its sad that they have any support at all. MS, the one company that has near unlimited funds to bring us endless new IP's decides not to do that, instead they choose to spend $80 billion to take games away and restrict access to them.

Crows90263d ago

Hate competition? You mean would like real competition? Nintendo competes with their own strategy and it works well.

MS doesn't want to compete. They just want to purchase as many studios as possible in order to kick competition out of the industry.

babadivad262d ago

I've only seen Playstation fans argue for zero competition.

ArmrdChaos262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

So in the past all I heard was PC/Playstation was the way to go and everyone had gaming rigs. Microsoft no longer had exclusives because they were available on PC. So what changed? Or is the real problem that the games are not exclusive to Sony or that Sony zealots can take credit for a game's success because it was on a Sony console? Microsoft made Starfield available day one on PC. What would Sony have done had they secured exclusive rights? Yeh....anti-consumer...sure... if you say so. I can't wait for the amount of whining when the next Elder Scrolls is about to come out. Start your petitions now...maybe you have a couple thousand signatures when the time finally comes around.

fr0sty262d ago

"Or is the real problem that the games are not exclusive to Sony or that Sony zealots can take credit for a game's success because it was on a Sony console?"

The elephant in the room you choose to ignore, Sony has a long history, dating back generations, of creating stellar first party original IP. Microsoft does not. Sony has proven themselves capable of creating their own classics, so they don't have to buy entire publishers to keep games from being on their competition's consoles. Microsoft cannot claim the same, they have a small and tired handful exclusives that they created themselves, which are about sequeled to death, and rather than investing in creating new original content, they buy out entire publishers and take games that were in development for competing consoles and make them exclusive... about as anti-consumer as you can get, far beyond financing the development of a game so that it will launch exclusive and it was intended to be exclusive from the start. Yet here you are cheering against your own interests as a gamer.

MS wants gamepass only model. And I would say many Xbox fans are happy with that. Issue isn’t just these acquisitions it’s what Sony and Nintendo may acquire and take those games away from others too. People just don’t understand these moves by MS will have reactions that will take games away from Xbox

Oh great ancient wiseman can you grace us with your infinite wisdom with an example.
End of SARCASM
Last I checked Sony purchased bungie but so far no game(marathon ) have been taken from Xbox while Microsoft in the same scenario took away their recent game and elder scrolls 6 is in the same chopping block

Sharky231262d ago

Wonder how Xbox people would react if Sony bought capcom or Take 2? Then kept GTA or Resident Evil from them. I promise it wouldn’t be pretty. I say turn about is fair play.

oldenjon262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

I don’t think people don’t understand that, and I think you might be missing the point. Microsoft set a bad precedent and now competitors have to do the same to stay afloat.

You do realize that Sony does the same thing with games right ? How do you think we got days gone the last of us and other killer games and Microsoft did not. We can’t be the pot calling the kettle black here.

MrDead262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

Please list the multiplatform publishers any platform holder has brought and banned from competition... you'll find this is unique to MS.

Single games are not the same as spending $80 billion on banning two multiplatform publishers

Zeref262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

I don't give af lol, Sony has been limiting choices for Xbox gamers for ages.

MS just beat them at their own game.

Starfield was gonna be exclusive to Playstation. So Sony just got a taste of their own medicine.

badz149262d ago

WOW! blame Sony for MS incompetence in making compelling GoTY calibre games!

or are you talking about timed exclusive? MS has been doing it for ages too. WTF are you talking about then?

343_Guilty_Spark262d ago

It’s on 99% of competition. The 1% is certain games on PlayStation

Mr_cheese262d ago

I don't think you truly understand percentage because you're just throwing numbers out there.

I think the same thing would happen if Sony was to buy or merge with EA Games expecially with there medal of honour and battlefield and command and conquer ips could possibly generate more money

TriniOutsider263d ago

That would never happen, EA would sooner join MS than Sony in the long run. Hell the head of EA supported the buy of Activision.

Crows90263d ago

The head of ea has no dog in the fight. It's not about supporting. They're not a platform holder at all. Business is business for them, screw the consumer.

Redemption-64262d ago

That is some fanboyish narrative. EA being in support of MS buying Activision doesn't equate to them wanting to join them. Microsoft is struggling to buy Activision and you think regulators are going to allow to buy another large publisher? There are other companies that can not only match Microsoft's check book but exceed them. Why do you think MS is worried about Google, Amazon and other large tech giants in the gaming industry?

gold_drake262d ago

theyd rather go to another American owned company, believe me.

EvertonFC263d ago

Basically a slip up, that old chesnut 🤔somebody got paid off for sure.

TriniOutsider263d ago (Edited 263d ago )

The whole goal of this buy-out is simply to take away from the Playstation brand. This is why I hope they aren't allowed to just buy up publishers and developers like Activision in the future. We are slowly entering an age where monopolies are being ignored because Phil Spencer went and cried about being in 3rd in some Podcast. Then drummed up support from investors and the media to back the Activision deal.

When Sony and Nintendo start making their moves I hope I can see how fanboys are gonna react as well.

OptimusDK263d ago

Sony is the monopoly all we heard from the Sony camp is Xbox has no games. You brought it on yourself now you live with it.

derek262d ago

Brought what upon ourselves? Lol. Now it's are fault for commenting on the fact that xbox has no games, well they have 1 game now but it's been over a decade of drought. Sony has not and has never been a barrier to Microsoft bringing games to Xbox. It's Microsofts lack of interest in gaming in general, unless they can control/dominate it like they do in the pc os space, that led them to ignore xbox for over 10 years. Now they think they can spend their way into forcing everyone to by into their crummy ecosystem, but it will not work as Microsoft is tacky unliked brand.

mkis007262d ago

What games has xbox gained from these aquisitions hmm? Last I checked they were all coming there before aquisition without exception. There was a rumor about timed starfield exclusivity but it was never going to happen with bethesda.

Amplitude262d ago (Edited 262d ago )

Guys this might come as a surprise but, your opinions, N4G comments, the podcast whining, fanboy accusations and media interviews have nothing to do with the results of the acquisition. Nobody brought anything on anybody. A multi billion dollar company bought out another company because at the end of the day, legally they were allowed to do so and they thought it would be beneficial. Also, yes, the acquisition will result in exclusive PC/XB games but they take years to develop. You're not just gonna have a stream of Activision exclusives a few months after court's over

Sony isn't a monopoly. Microsoft isn't a monopoly. Both companies do have games. Competition includes taking over companies and making exclusive deals for early access and DLC and both companies do it and have done it - as much as I personally hate it and wish everything was on everything.

You're on N4G commenting so you're clearly pretty into gaming. Just bite the bullet, save up a bit and buy a PS5 and a PC so you can play everything and stop being psychopaths.

Profchaos263d ago

Consolidation sucks no consumers should support in the long run were the ones that will suffer

Crows90263d ago

Unfortunately the most mindless fans are in support.

Now suddenly they all agree Ms has no games. But now that they've bought a bunch of studios the problem they've been denying all these generations is gone.

How? I’m sorry but how when they literally port their games to the PC now after not even 2 years, it’s rumored GoW Ragnarok is next.

The best thing they could have done is focus on the generation before with PS3 / PS4 titles and when it got to the PS6 then start porting PS5 games so people will want to get the sequel on the new console

Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming

Redemption-643h ago

Rock Star does the same thing. Release 1st on consoles, wait a year or two then release on PC. It's clearly a strategy that works for them.

They don't need a lot of PC gamers to move to Playstation, but they just need a few who would also buy into it and possibly double dip. There are some very unhappy gamers on Twitter, who wanted to hear day and date for all games.

Cacabunga1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Fox
Your analyse is not accurate..

If sony keeps things the way they are then they will grow the business. Some pc gamers who really liked God of War for example might buy PS4 or 5 to play Ragnarok. Same if they announce ghost of tsushima 2 or a new Ratchet game.

thorstein3h ago

How?

According to Sony, by co launching live service games like Helldivers2 day one, then enticing PC players to want to play sequels on the console for SP games.

That's how. If you play Ghost of Tsushima and Sony launches GoT 2 on PS later this year, you're more apt to want to grab the console and play the sequel instead of waiting.

Domkakop2h ago

Don't think you have a grip on how PC players consume.

ThinkThink1h ago

Yeah, pc players are the most patient of players. They will just wait for the game to come to pc.

Tacoboto1h ago

You're just spitting back out the Sony PR line.

PC-first and PC-centric gaming is a different beast. Helldivers 2's popularity and GoT's popularity are because they're good solid games, not because they're from PlayStation publishing.

It's the same PlayStation that put Helldivers 2 for sale internationally, then pulled their PSN-Steam removal card. The same PlayStation that released Returnal with UE4's dreaded shader stutter. The same PlayStation that released TLOU Part 1 in a broken state.

If Sony's PS4 slate of titles didn't convince PC gamers, if their current PS5 titles still don't, ports of games they've had *years* of knowing and reading and hearing about aren't going to convince them to finally buy a console.

Don't fall so easily for the same PR BS that fabricates quotes from their own studio heads.

romulus232m ago

You're mistakenly speaking for all PC gamers, there are bound to be some people who are not willing to wait and for Sony those are potential console buyers.

helicoptergirl8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

"While Helldivers 2 was released day and date on both PS5 and PC, don’t expect single-player narrative-driven games to be released in the same boat by Sony anytime soon. - This was confirmed by PlayStation’s soon-to-be co-CEO Hermen Hulst in Sony’s business segment presentation"

There you have it. Won't be 'day and date' single player games on PC anytime soon or for the forseeable future. They understand single player games are Playstation's backbone.

CrashMania6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

So much for the nonsense narrative that playstation is somehow failing so they are going to immediately start releasing every single game day and date on PC lol.

Elda4h ago

That is what the competition has to deal with.

Domkakop2h ago

Yea people tend to project the behavior of their favourite failing publisher onto Sony. Sony is not a failing publisher

Elda4h ago

Agreed. First & foremost Playstation not only wants to sell their AAA first party games but their gaming consoles to play them on that is why their AAA first party games come to PC later after it sells on PS consoles.

ocelot074h ago

I was told that Playstation was doing so bad on here and on X that Helldivers 2 was going to release on Xbox and Sony was going to start releasing all games on pc day and date with playstation. Why do people constantly lie on the internet!!!!!

Hofstaderman4h ago

Sour XBOX fanboys trying to vindicate Phil's dumbass decisions.

Fishy Fingers3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

We've gone from you'll never see PS games on PC, to you'll never see any PS games day one on PC, to you'll see some PS games day one but have to wait for others.

I mean, its kinda looks like it's heading one way no? That "wait" is going to get shorter and shorter.

Fishy Fingers3h ago

It's happening.

God of War 2018 - 4 years
Horizon Zero dawn - 3 years
Horizon Forbidden West - 2 years

XiNatsuDragnel3h ago

That's a smart move because at the end of the day playstation is a hardware business and need to sell hardware folks

Software_Lover3h ago

Meh, I'm done with consoles altogether.

Bathyj2h ago

Considering the amount of bangers PlayStation and Nintendo make, your name doesn't sound very apt.

darthv721h ago

Well I think he means that on PC, all software eventually is playable on it. Which is true.

Consoles just are a convenient way of playing some sooner than later.

ApocalypseShadow36m ago

Darth, all software eventually is playable on PC through emulation and theft of games. You forgot that part. It's not through legal means.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff218311h ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan9h ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga8h ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--10h ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC10h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop6h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.
