Starfield Is the Biggest Game for Xbox Since Halo 5

We are now less than one month away from the launch of Starfield, the new space-exploration RPG from Bethesda Game Studios – makers of The Elder Scrolls series as well as Fallout 3 and 4. And after an excellent and very well-received 45-minute Starfield Direct presentation in June, hype is running high.

ChasterMies637d ago

IGN’s tepid comparison. Biggest exclusive since Halo 3? Nah. Probably not the big. Biggest since the Halo 5? Sure, why not.

4Sh0w637d ago

Nothing can live up to the lofty expectations some are placing on it but I think as long as your expectations are realistic it should be a great game that you can play and go back to for years to come.

Profchaos636d ago

I agree many people hated fallout 4 personally I think they were all crazy it was my goty that year and probably for the next 2 years.

But point being many of those design decisions appear to have carried over so people need to check their expectations overall

peppeaccardo636d ago

I hope this is going to be good so that our Xbox brothers will have something to squeeze the power of the X for once. And I hope that the subsequent success will bring also some spectacular space game to PS5 as well. Competition is good even if some folks cannot see it !

fr0sty636d ago

This game is getting overhyped to the point that people's expectations will be set unrealistically high upon release, and it will then fail to live up to all of them, and then cue the bad reviews. It could be the next Oblivion, and that would still happen.

DarXyde636d ago

There's really no reason why anyone should have set their expectations to an unrealistically high degree. Based on everything shown, it is very clearly a Bethesda single player game. If you like those games, you'll very likely enjoy Starfield. If not, you likely won't.

I think people have figured that out by now. It is unlikely that the game gets any review embargoes, so I reckon they'll be confident in the final product.

In short, it'll be a quality title. Not for everyone, and no game is, but we're not looking at a Redfall situation. I'm very certain of that.

I like everyone in the press and there adds are saying "from the makers of fallout 3/4 skyrim"

Its like hey everyone its not 2011 its 2023 you all really think the team that made 2008 fallout 3 is making starfield? let alone 2011 bethdesda

My expectations are very low and i played fallout without vats which was "special" so i know the shooting will be meh if we are lucky.
then the fact the last year its been bug fixing/performance nightmare over there with the outcome of 30fps on a console they own? like wow yikes.

If the games menu won't take out the console or pc and i can finish a mission without a issue then it will pas my expectation as these were not possible on switch skyrim.

Then you got the fallout 76 seal of todd quality

Oh yeall remember elder scrolls mobile? pay for your loot chest chief kiss on that one.

--Onilink--636d ago

So you are saying that people shouldn’t expect the same developers that made Fallout 3/4 to be making Starfield, but then you say that the shooting will be meh because of what you experienced in Fallout 3/4?

I hope you do see the irony of your comment

just_looken636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

!qnilink

The shooting was never do too the dev team it was because of the creation engine.

The engine was never designed for fast paced shooting and or fps movement at all fallout 3 was there first time making a fps game with the creation engine. The issues with shooting that were there carried over into fallout 4.

They are using the same engine from fallout 4 on starfield so the worlds best devs can make starfield but with this creation engine it will never feel like doom/battlefield/cod and or halo style shooting.

Yes i know its officially creation engine 2 but i ignore that as frostbite has had core bugs from battlefield 3 stay with it even into 2042 the number just means a update but with the old code/tool set.

Yes i know starfield is not a fps but when your core combat loop is gun based with a first person camera you half to have solid combat to insensitive player engagement but 30fps with fallout 4 stiff combat no vats might be a tuff sale for alot of users.

We will see soon just think of playing fallout 4 no vats 30fps on a controller

shinoff2183636d ago

Personally the shooting mechanics is background noise to me. If it's like fallout 4 it'll suffice. I still say people are putting to much stock into it being 30fps. Not a huge deal imo.

1Victor636d ago

I can’t wait to see how this turn out to be will it live to all the hype or be another …….you know what I’m not going to say it not to jinx it.
Best of luck Microsoft the gaming world eyes are on you for this one stolen show.

Snookies12637d ago

Halo 5 didn't even feel like a Halo game to me personally.

Profchaos636d ago

I forgot I was playing a halo game during my run-through it felt like generic fps number 257 and I brought a Xbox one specifically for it I was hanging out for h5 even as a PS4 owner I brought my x1 home plugged it up patched it waited until the next day finally got to play h5 started great but after 3 hours I was pretty over the story I ended up spending more time on horizon 3 and master chief collection which better than I expected after how trashed it was and the fact it only cost me $5 for the disc at retail

Markdn636d ago

Regardless this really is a. Make. Or break game. If its a disaster it will mean serious changes to xbox marketing and structure, Even if I prefer playstation, no competition isn't good for any industry. As much as I dislike. Xbox, we need it to survive.

Profchaos636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

I agree it's not like there isn't other games in the pipeline however this is the biggest drop for the foreseeable future unless avowed really turns things around it doesn't look like a marquee game at present.

But given the legacy IP Xbox now controls Doom, Wolfenstein, commander keen, quake, soon to be crash and Spyro and thps potentially they could make some killer games but the gamepass model is a problem it demands content not quality.

If starfeild fails and subscription numbers don't increase we could be looking at a future where games take six months or more to appear on GP in order to attract sales and provide some revenue.

Soulsborne635d ago

Xbox has been dead for two generations. M$ themselves are pushing away from console, they know nothing they do will catch them up to Sony and Nintendo, so theyve moved on to becoming the netflix of gaming with GP, play anywhere anytime, except with the worst of corps in charge.

Jin_Sakai637d ago

Would’ve also been one of the biggest games on PS5 before removing it.

sparky77637d ago

You can't remove a game from a platform it was never released on. It's like being a PS4 owner and complaining you didn't get to play FF16 before it was "removed".

Jin_Sakai637d ago

Starfield was reportedly in development for PS5 so yes it can be removed and that’s exactly what happened..

Charlieboy333636d ago

@ Sparkplug Pete Hines himself said they were developing a PS5 version before Phil cancelled it. Understand?

shinoff2183636d ago

It was definitely un development for ps5 Like redfall was

636d ago
Profchaos636d ago

You can when it was in development for said platform

Lightning77637d ago

It also would of been exclusive to PS5 for a year or 2. Then you would all be happy and praising the game hard.

Jin_Sakai636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

Yep, just like I praised Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop. Oh wait…

shinoff2183636d ago

The problem is you lump all ps fans into that group. Imehen in fact some of us ps fans on looking forward to playing it

Profchaos636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

Nope not at all those deals suck still there's nobody denying that but permanently removing games from a fanbase is far lower than any temporary block.

In 5 years time when starfeild is a complete afterthought and nobody is even mentioning it who doesn't get to play it yup still half your fanbase. PlayStation users were actually the biggest purchaser's of Bethesda games but 6 billion dollars makes that easy to forget I guess

StarkR3ality636d ago

Meanwhile Jim tried to buy it's exclusivity.. saying he doesn't like Third party exclusives. Fucking hilarious.

Jim Ryan is literally the embodiment of playstation fans entitlement.

IRetrouk636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

No he didn't, he did state he was fine with ms making starfield exclusive though.

That projection though🤣 😭

Abear21636d ago

Yup, both Sony and MS knew this game is the next Skyrim and tried to lock it up. That tells you all you need to know about it.

1Victor636d ago

@stark:”Meanwhile Jim tried to buy it's exclusivity.. saying he doesn't like Third party exclusives. Fucking hilarious. ”
Meanwhile Phil came purchased the developer and CANCELED the PlayStation ver depriving the leading console gamers of a the game experience (good, bad or mediocre). F__ing hilarious.
Phil Spence is the literal embodiment of the Xbox fanboys LIE,CHEAT,STEAL and whine when they don’t get their way.

Profchaos636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

Most PlayStation fans hate Jim Ryan and under his lead the platform has gone from strength to middling at best he's taken the majority of funding for games and pushed towards a gaas future in direct contradiction of what the PS fans actually want

PlayStation thrives at the times where executive teams have passion for the platform jim Ryan isn't a gamer or has never stated to be and is the definition of a suit looking for a paycheck out of his depth

"Starfield was reportedly in development for PS5 so yes it can be removed and that’s exactly what happened"

It was "planned" to be on PS5, but never made it to development stage for it, as Todd Howard confirmed it himself. So it was *canceled* on PS5 and not removed.

636d ago
Lightning77636d ago

Ok you don't like Ghost and Deathloop. What does that tell me? Tells me you don't care or looking forward to the game. If that's tye case then why even be concerned it's not hitting PS?

Profchaos635d ago

Seriously looking at deathloop by itself forget exclusivity the game garnered 10/10 scores for a reason I did play and finish it I would say it felt like a 8 for me but I wouldn't say the 10s are wrong.

Ghostwire felt like a 6.

When we talk about these games it's easy to take sides because of console wars but who does that really help in the end a certain team talks up a game because it's their teams game when in reality it's a 6 out of 10

shinoff2183635d ago

Ghost and desthloop are 2 completly different games compared to starfield wtf lightning

ArmrdChaos635d ago (Edited 635d ago )

But it was perfectly fine for Jim Ryan to attempt to buy exclusivity to it. That action provoked MS to buy Bethesda. Don't like it.....go cry to Jim Ryan. At least you get it day one on PC....which is more than what Sony would have offered......at best a year later. So tell us again who is pro-consumer?

After Starfield, what will be Microsoft's next biggest game? You may have to wait 3 years to find out...

sparky77637d ago

Avowed, Hellbalde 2, Fable, FM, Clockwork Revolution to name but a few.

shinoff2183636d ago

Clockwork seemed interesting but I was pretty disappointed seeing inxile doing a first person shooter tbh. The others you named eh

Chevalier636d ago (Edited 636d ago )

Hellblade 2?! 😆 🤣 😂.

Hellblade 1 on Xbox, Playstation, Switch and PC took 2 years to sell 1 million units. Sorry you have an inflated idea of how well this game will do.

Lightning77637d ago

Forza in October Hellblade 2 and Avowed next year.

Flakegriffin636d ago

The new Forza looks pretty bland.

porkChop637d ago

Why would anyone have to wait? They've already announced plenty of big games on the way.

Obscure_Observer636d ago

"After Starfield, what will be Microsoft's next biggest game? You may have to wait 3 years to find out..."

Both Fable and Hellblade II will probably be out next year, so not much of a waiting if you ask me.

I mean, I'd be surprised if it is bigger than CoD, tbh. Either last year or this years' one.

CantThinkOfAUsername635d ago

CoD MWIII is led by Sledgehammer, which, to put it simply, isn't much loved by the fanbase.

Fallout 4 on Switch 2 seems inevitable, but what about Starfield?

A Fallout 4 Nintendo Switch 2 port seems like an inevitability, but what about other Bethesda RPGs like Starfield.

I think all games will end up on switch from Xbox. MS has embraced going to other platforms now if games aren't doing well on Nintendo MS may be more selective in the future

On playstation they have been quite successful

anast31d ago

I'm not sure too many people want to play Starfield.

Profchaos31d ago

Phils all but confirmed they are going in hard with the switch 2

TheColbertinator31d ago

All are welcome to Switch 2. Microsoft Games Studios is interested in long term profits and market value not petty fanboy thoughts.

i believe that 100%

but not cause its difficult to work the ps5, its cause the game itself is fundamentally broken asf

RaidenBlack40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Yea they need to fix it and I think they teased some major updates and patches this year. And as the norm we know even those won't be perfect and it'll take another year or two to reach a better state.
What Starfield also need is few more DLCs to fix the barrenness. .... and especially a substantial banger one with story and exploration to coincide with the PS5 launch and renew some interest.

dveio40d ago

"its cause the game itself is fundamentally broken asf"

Thanks.

I hate the rambling around pretty obvious things.

Such as, like you said, Starfield is just a big pile of broken code.

The latest news about Starfield's developmental environment just proved it.

badz14940d ago

If they release a PS5 version and it's still a loading screen simulator, they will just embarrass themselves.

Abear2139d ago

Corporate greed is the sole reason it’s coming to PS5. Expect the same game. This is M$ and Bethesda trying to recoup losses and capitalize on huge PS5 player base in an attempt to fund their next lame project.

neutralgamer199240d ago

Hopefully there is a huge major patch that gives the game a fresh chance

rudero40d ago

I believe it 100% because it was already being developed for PlayStation before they were acquired.

Not a rumor or a magical Microsoft push…
It was already in development.

-Foxtrot40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

They are going to have to do something to make you want the PS5 version

They can't escape all the negative coverage it's received since launch so they will need something to draw people in and honestly I can't think of anything.

It will sell, it just won't sell as well as they would have hoped for a Bethesda open world game now that they are launching late when opinions have already been made.

But not gonna lie this game was fucking ass.

Probably my least favorite Bethesda style rpg ever.
Regretted paying to play it early.

Report: Starfield on PS5 Seems to Be Loaded in Backend According to Mods

The official PlayStation logo has been spotted in one of Starfield's mods on Bethesda's own creations site.

B5R55d ago

Just announce it already.

lukasmain55d ago

They should try to remove the stupid overabundance of ridiculous loading screens for the PS5 version. But I assume it's not possible because of their crap engine and/or their laziness to do anything about it. But it is possible in some instances as some modders have done so a few times for PC from what I have seen.

It will be super jarring and weird for PS5 players to see so many loading screens, I worry it will destroy any potential immersion. I don't think I could handle it honestly lol. Combining that with the uninspired gameplay, I expect it would tank my motivation to play and finish the game.

Profchaos55d ago

Yeah I feel like it was also the creation engine it was core to why I gave up on the game the forced tutorials I was still getting 4 hours in just annoyed me it did t help I had just played through tears of the kingdom st the time which had zero tutorials and being forced to stop for a guided tutorial every 20 minutes killed me I have up at 6 hours despite being a huge fallout fan

Armaggedon55d ago

If one doesnt like the screens, just dint olay the game. Just like if one doesnt not like being handcuffed, dont play a fromsoft souls game. They are integral to the games design.

BISHOP-BRASIL55d ago

Are you seriously trying to push loading screens as a voluntary design choice rather than a technical limitation in 2025? Good luck with that...

Armaggedon55d ago

I dont know… is me having input delay when I try to roll in elden ring a technical limitation?

Bathyj55d ago

Meh.
I just started Death stranding. I don't have time for that.

LoveSpuds55d ago

I am trying to wrap up my Elden Ring playthrough so I can get a replay of Death Stranding in ahead of the sequel. That new video last week has be really excited, I loved the first game, one of my fave platinum trophies.

Bathyj55d ago

This is my first playthrough.
I didn't really get it when it released.
But after that trailer I decided to give it another look.

After 5 hours, I've built my first bridge. While ïts to early to be 100% sure I think I'm hooked. I'll see how I go. It feels like a game that hard to sell to someone but if you know you know

There's just so much Kojima in the game.

LoveSpuds54d ago

Just wait until later in the game when you start building a network of zip lines. Journeys that used to take 20 mins are done on a couple of minutes, it feels so satisfying 😀

Hope it continues to resonate with you dude, enjoy!

Profchaos55d ago

If what never a matter of if but when

MaximusPrime_55d ago

I have zero interest in this game but there are people who like it. People have their personal preference.
