How To Build Nft Hydroponic System
Building an NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system is a straightforward process that involves creating a shallow film of nutrient-rich water that flows over the roots of plants. NFT systems are excellent for growing leafy greens, herbs, and small-fruited vegetables. Here's a step-by-step guide to building an NFT hydroponic system:
Materials Needed:
Growing channel or trough (typically made of PVC or other food-safe materials)
Submersible water pump
Reservoir (to hold the nutrient solution)
PVC pipes or tubing (for water delivery)
Growing media (such as Rockwool cubes or net pots with hydroton)
Net pots or cups (to hold the plants)
Nutrient solution
pH meter and pH adjustment kit
EC (Electrical Conductivity) meter (optional, for measuring nutrient strength)
Instructions:
Design the System: Determine the size and layout of your NFT system. The growing channel or trough should be at a slight incline, allowing the nutrient solution to flow down and return to the reservoir.
Build the Growing Channel: Construct the growing channel or trough using food-safe materials like PVC. Ensure it is watertight and has a slight downward slope to facilitate the flow of the nutrient solution.
Set Up the Reservoir: Place the reservoir below the growing channel to collect and store the nutrient solution. It should be large enough to hold an adequate amount of water for the plants to access.
Install the Water Pump: Place the submersible water pump in the reservoir. Connect PVC pipes or tubing from the pump to the top end of the growing channel, creating a closed-loop system.
Install the Delivery System: At the top end of the growing channel, create small holes or slits to allow the nutrient solution to flow evenly across the channel. The water pump will pump the nutrient solution from the reservoir to the top of the channel, creating a thin film of water that flows over the plant roots.
Prepare the Growing Media: Fill net pots or cups with a suitable growing medium like Rockwool cubes or hydroton. Insert one plant seedling or cutting into each net pot.
Plant the Seedlings: Place the net pots with the seedlings into the holes or slots in the growing channel, ensuring the roots are exposed to the flowing nutrient solution.
Mix the Nutrient Solution: Prepare the nutrient solution according to the instructions on the nutrient product packaging. Measure the pH of the solution and adjust it to the appropriate range (usually around pH 5.5 to 6.5 for most plants in hydroponics).
Start the System: Turn on the water pump to initiate the flow of the nutrient solution. Monitor the system regularly to ensure the nutrient solution is flowing evenly and that the plants are receiving proper hydration.
Monitor and Maintain: Check the nutrient solution levels regularly and top up the reservoir as needed. Also, monitor the pH and nutrient strength of the solution to maintain optimal conditions for plant growth.
Remember that NFT systems rely on a continuous flow of nutrient solution to provide plants with the necessary nutrients. Proper monitoring and maintenance are essential to ensure the success of your NFT hydroponic system and the healthy growth of your plants.
