Solid Xbox Showcase Should Give Sony Incentive to Stop Being So Damn Cloak and Daggers About PS5

PushSquare: “The curtain has closed on what was, in this author’s partially informed opinion, probably the strongest Xbox Showcase in recent memory.”

Yeh without showing any Twisted metal gameplay (or even a hint it even in development)

Without any good clear realtime marathon gameplay they have deffo lost this 'e3' period of showcases.

Thing is they probably got more up their sleeves and have at least 2-3 megatons still to show.

Perhaps naughty dog or guerilla will come.to the rescue at Tokyo gameshow. Fingers crossed.

Flawlessmic352d ago

Sony will be fine, 1 poor showcase doesn't change anything.

It's the other side creating fake concern and doom and gloom.

Sony will deliver as always.

InUrFoxHole352d ago

Actually it says a lot. I wouldn't be all THE HOUSE IS ON FIRE!!! But there was nothing lined up for 2024. That was notable to me. I shouldn't say nothing... but nothing of interest to me. That being said sony will probably rely on money hating 3rd party next year and kill it in 2025.

Flawlessmic352d ago

Honestly it Sony, I'm sure they have some surprises for us next yr.

I'm really not concerned and at the worst like you said Sony will have secured some big 3rd exclusives so the ps fanbase will have something that only they can play one way or the other.

Ff7 rebirth and very likely silent Hill 2, the point is Sony doesn't leave there consumer base with nothing.

3rd or first all that matters is that they deliver exclusive content each and every yr.

S2Killinit352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

It wasn't a poor showing, they created the narrative that it was because Sony went first. Sony showed 35 games to MS’s 25. There were a number of heavy hitters. The only thing missing was Sony’s own first party games. But that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Flawlessmic352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

Sorry s2

Strictly talking about 1st party here.

Gotta disagree with you here, ps has been my main platform since ps1, while I own the other consoles, sony and ps have always been my favourite platform.

In saying that, the showcase sucked dude, I don't know why or how it can be denied.

We waited almost 2 yrs for a showcase from Sony to be wowed by the 1st party studios as always and all I got was gci trailers for live service games...............

Yea spiderman looked Sick but that's it.

Again I have no doubt Sony will deliver as always but that show case terrible.

Sony should of done a 3rd party state of play and then a separate state of play for spider man.

Nothing else they showed was even worth doing a SONY showcase for.

Compare it any of Sony's other showcases and it's not even close.

I can't remember the last time I ever watched a Sony main event and left it feeling deflated.

__SteakDeck__352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

@Flawlessmic E3 2014 was bad. You got a Fromsoftware logo announcement (which became Bloodborne, but we didn’t know that at the time) and a Uncharted 4 cinematic trailer. That’s it!

GamingSinceForever352d ago

OMG Sony potentially takes a year off (2024) and they are done. MS has been taking consecutive years off and they are back after one seemingly good show. 🤦🏾‍♂️ 🤫

__SteakDeck__352d ago

@InUrFoxHole Nothing for 2024? FF 7 Rebirth and Rose of the Ronin is slated for 2024. I know they’re not 1st party, but they’re considered exclusives. Death Stranding is also slated for 2024, as of now.

EvertonFC352d ago

you mean "1 average 7/10 showcase doesn`t change anything"

I personally think everyone has gone over the top with Sony showcase was awful, it was on PAR with MS imo. Both showed plenty of 3rd party games and some indie. What Ms had this amazing showcase because of fable, starfield, avowed? Take starfield out of Xbox showcase and it would have been pretty disapointing imo.

DarXyde352d ago

True that Sony is historically great at coming out swinging when they want to come out swinging, but I'm glad they got the public flogging they did over their showcase. The community (journalists and gamers alike) showed them in no uncertain terms that they are NOT above criticism, and that is exactly where I like them to be.

I don't like to fall back on "Sony will deliver as always". I've done that in the past and this thinking has not failed me yet... But I like to see them sweat a little bit.

This showcase from PlayStation was really them showing what GaaS titles are in the pipeline and I suspect there will be a bigger unveiling for their more prominent first party studios soon. I gotta say, following the recent acquisitions of Haven and Bungie, I have to commend them for even having trailers out this fast. Sony has been busy behind the scenes, though let's hope GaaS isn't the big thing and we get back into the first party stuff we love.

The pressure is nice. I think the last time Sony got serious about dominating the competition, we got Bloodborne which to this day I maintain is the best game of its type.

Anyway, a mediocre showing isn't the end of the world. For exclusives, Final Fantasy XVI looks outstanding and Spider-Man 2 isn't far off. There's also VII Rebirth in the pipeline. Very much looking forward to those, along with Metaphor and P3R. Just these games will be a time commitment

Shane Kim352d ago

Just like Darxyde says, I want Sony to know we stand ready with the pitchforks. I can't be bothered investing 500-600 dollars and not know what is coming up.

LordoftheCritics352d ago

Sony will be fine.

Sony show's up with the games.

That's how they succeed.

shinoff2183352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

Inurfoxhole

You mean games like stalker 2 and numerous other 3rd party games ms also moneyhats. Sure it isn't on the level like ff16 or anything but ms can't do that cause they don't sell the games. You think square would make ff16 exclusive to Xbox to sell 1.2 million copies(ff15) no aaa dev wants that

S2k,
As a Sony fan ms showcase was miles better. Can't even compare. Ms showed interesting stuff, we got mgs3(not much shown) and a few others. Sony had nothing where I thought holy sh, while starfield was on point

Agree wholeheartedly flawless

Sonic1881351d ago

@S2K

Microsoft showcase and Summer game fest was way better than Sony showcase. If you can't see that, I don't know what to tell you. Microsoft is bringing the heat and I love it.

smashman98351d ago

Why is everything always this side, that side? It was a crappy showcase. As a PlayStation fan, I expect more out of Sony than what we got. It really is as simple as that. That isn't to say Playstation has nothing coming, I'm certain that they do. Show me the goods.

I mean TGS:
2023: https://events.nikkeibp.co....
2022: https://expo.nikkeibp.co.jp...

You know, one of the largest game shows in the world at Makuhari Messe!

KingKionic 352d ago

Sony can not give any roadmap beyond 2023 except for Spiderman 2 and specific live service title. The reason is that theres nothing ready. Sony isnt holding back anything.

Sony is in transition mode with live service and waiting for Guerilla games,Santa Monica,Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog to get deeper in development.

If you look directly at the development times of games they all produced you would see none of them will be ready till much further on. Insomniac is the only one who is a anomaly with juggling titles.

Xbox has been investing and now we are seeing the harvest and it wont stop either because there are other studios that are approaching the 4-5 year mark since there last game.

352d ago Replies(4)
sparky77352d ago

Yep the rumours of all Sony's studios being in development hell are pretty much true at this rate. We already got confirmation about Naughty Dog and SSM will like be absent until the end of the gen.

Looks like Sony will just have GaaS games and expansions packs masked as sequels.

I expect a lot of 3rd party deals going forward since that's the only way they will have any games.

KingKionic 352d ago

That live service stuff is dangerous allowing bungie to be the regulator.

You will get tons of clones.

VersusDMC352d ago

"I expect a lot of 3rd party deals going forward since that's the only way they will have any games"

Only xbox games this year have been Bethesda games that they bought off playstation for billions...what's the difference?

BehindTheRows352d ago

I need some of what you're on. It's powerful stuff.

When you leave LaLa Land, you'll realize that NONE of what you posted has any validity at all.

mkis007352d ago

Why do you always recycle these speculative talking points. Sony has never been absent and if need be they will get a third party to fill in for a game or 2.

shinoff2183352d ago

You guys sure talk alot of sh for not really getting any games from ms. Just relax sparky

ironmonkey351d ago

Lol yeah? How come Microsoft, your precious still dead last? How come now being 3 years old can't move sales?. Why Nintendo and Sony being light years ahead of third place. Why did Phil say their aware they can't compete with the Sony and tendo? When?

derek351d ago

@sparky, why do you xbox fans always do this? The xbox show was objectively very mid just like Sony's but at least playstation fans demand better. Either way it's still just a showcase, Sony has been delivering exclusive AAA games before their showcase and right after in ff16, and into the immediate future. Can't say the same for Microsoft yet xbox fans always get overhyped and start talking trash only to be eventually let down. Lol, it will happen again.

darkrider352d ago

What harvest? Cinematic trailers? Sony doesn't have nothing... Wrong machine. The only console that is having a terrible gen are the series.

If it wasn't buy buying publishers, this year Microsoft studios would deliver only forza. Lol. Let's not forget 2022 zero games, please no indie talks...

blackblades352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

That's true, 4 of Bethesda games out this year. If ms didnt buy them then they wouldnt have any exclusive besides forza. People say insomniac is carrying Sony but apparently Bethesda is carrying MS. Bethesda is good fit for MS just like how insomniac is a good fit for Sony

purple101352d ago

"If you look directly at the development times of games they all produced you would see none of them will be ready till much further on. Insomniac is the only one who is a anomaly with juggling titles."

Ghost of Tushima released a while ago. That team will be ready with a new game soon.

Returnal released a while ago. They will have a new game.

Wolverine is coming.

Reconsider?

shinoff2183352d ago

To be fair xbox better have something. All those canceled ps5 games from publisher and studios they bought, xbox hasn't released much besides forza and hi fi this whole generation they better damn well have something.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 351d ago
darkrider352d ago

Not really I thought Microsoft could put some pressure on Sony but after that. Not really. Many of the games seem very far away from being ready.

Awoed is dated, nothing scream 12 teraflops. Next Gen. Sorry but cinematic trailer aren't gameplay trailers

Again forza is the only game that seems next Gen, effects, rez, frames. The total package. Everything else meh.

MightyHealthy352d ago

Hellblade and starfield don't look next gen?

Magog352d ago

Did you see the character models in Starfield? Looks like New Vegas with glued on beards and stiff animations.

__SteakDeck__352d ago

@MightyHealthy Hellblade does graphically. Starfield looks next gen when it comes to size and scope.

LoveSpuds352d ago

I am excited to play Starfield but I have to say, the character models and external environment details looked very weak to my eye. The hair, facial hair and eyes on the character models were laughable to be honest, just go back and look at the character creation portion on the presentation.

I think the most impressive visual element was the lighting, that really did look fantastic, some of those sunrise/sunset vistas looked stunning.

I'll be checking it out for sure, but I'll be there for the exploration because the AI on enemies in combat was again, really poor.

darkrider352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

Hellblade didn't see gameplay. Starfield look good, but 30 frames isn't next gen
And none of those games are made by Microsoft or Microsoft got anything with their creation...

shinoff2183352d ago

Magog Your definitely stretching. Stsrfield looked fine.

derek351d ago

@Mighty is hellblade even a game at this point? Lol. Seriously they've shown it 3-4 times since 2019!? And still nothing that looks like interactive gameplay, just like in-game cutscenes or on rail animations, hahaha. Be realistic.

FinalFantasyFanatic352d ago

I didn't think the Microsoft showcase was significantly better, yes it was better, but not hugely so.

MrSec84352d ago

There was nothing Solid about that supposed showcase from Xbox, what people seem to forget is that Sony have actually been releasing exclusives all generation, they've shown their major hitters for the year and they also have a ton of stuff that is confirmed to be in the works, that they just haven't talked about and no it's not just live service stuff.

Guerrilla Games, Santa Monica, London Studio, Bend, Naughty Dog, Team Asobi etc have all been deep in development on multiple projects that aren't live service for at least 3 years.

__SteakDeck__352d ago

@MrSec84 Than You! Most of what MS showed are games they we knew about for years. Starfield and Forza were announced years ago. Starfield was supposed to come out last year. Avowed, Fable, and Hellblade were games that were announced 3+ years ago with CG trailers. MS only announced 2 new SP IPs from their studios at their show. Sony could did what MS did in 2020, but they don’t want to announce their games until they have something substantial to show. They’re not being “cocky” they’re just being patient. They learned from their past mistakes of announcing things too early.

CBaoth351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

what I found most disappointing from both shows was Avowed. Looked like a LotR fantasy in the CGI announcement then somewhere along the lines it fell in a fortnite blender.

FinalFantasyFanatic352d ago

This, it was a good showing from Microsoft, but I wasn't that much more impressed than what Sony recently showed.

Flakegriffin352d ago

Ubisoft Forward Reveals June 10th Showcase

Looking forward to this as while E3 and the in-person shows with all of the companies are missed; it is nice to see what is coming. On June 10, Ubisoft Forward kicks off at 12PM PT/3PM ET, offering up exclusive looks at Star Wars Outlaws, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, XDefiant, and more.

Garethvk2m ago

We can hope. Especially if the rumors of Cillian Murphy and Alaska are true.

Relientk7719m ago

Assassin's Creed Hexe is what I wanna hear about most. Yes I wanna play as a witch with magic during the 16 century witch trials in Germany (as per rumors). Sign me up

Huey_My_D_Long9m ago

Yeah, Hex sounds amazing to me as well, and I've been playing since AC 1. I'm real curious how are they gonna fit the magic into the game, maybe in similar way the dlc introduced gods and god abilities. but I love that I've heard its gonna have a horror vibe.

PlayStation Aims to Entice PC Gamers to Play Single-Player Sequels on Consoles

Sony aims to release live service PlayStation games day & date on PC and PS5, but single-player games will have more "strategic approach."

-Foxtrot9h ago

How? I’m sorry but how when they literally port their games to the PC now after not even 2 years, it’s rumored GoW Ragnarok is next.

The best thing they could have done is focus on the generation before with PS3 / PS4 titles and when it got to the PS6 then start porting PS5 games so people will want to get the sequel on the new console

Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming

Redemption-645h ago

Rock Star does the same thing. Release 1st on consoles, wait a year or two then release on PC. It's clearly a strategy that works for them.

They don't need a lot of PC gamers to move to Playstation, but they just need a few who would also buy into it and possibly double dip. There are some very unhappy gamers on Twitter, who wanted to hear day and date for all games.

Cacabunga3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Fox
Your analyse is not accurate..

If sony keeps things the way they are then they will grow the business. Some pc gamers who really liked God of War for example might buy PS4 or 5 to play Ragnarok. Same if they announce ghost of tsushima 2 or a new Ratchet game.

-Foxtrot55m ago

Rockstar?

Yeah I loved playing Red Dead Redemption on PC…….

@Cacabunga

I highly doubt it, PC gamers have their setups, if they didn’t budge for years to get a console despite all the cool exclusives then they aren’t going to budge now knowing a new PS5 game will get a port 2 years later

thorstein5h ago

How?

According to Sony, by co launching live service games like Helldivers2 day one, then enticing PC players to want to play sequels on the console for SP games.

That's how. If you play Ghost of Tsushima and Sony launches GoT 2 on PS later this year, you're more apt to want to grab the console and play the sequel instead of waiting.

Domkakop3h ago

Don't think you have a grip on how PC players consume.

ThinkThink3h ago

Yeah, pc players are the most patient of players. They will just wait for the game to come to pc.

Tacoboto2h ago

You're just spitting back out the Sony PR line.

PC-first and PC-centric gaming is a different beast. Helldivers 2's popularity and GoT's popularity are because they're good solid games, not because they're from PlayStation publishing.

It's the same PlayStation that put Helldivers 2 for sale internationally, then pulled their PSN-Steam removal card. The same PlayStation that released Returnal with UE4's dreaded shader stutter. The same PlayStation that released TLOU Part 1 in a broken state.

If Sony's PS4 slate of titles didn't convince PC gamers, if their current PS5 titles still don't, ports of games they've had *years* of knowing and reading and hearing about aren't going to convince them to finally buy a console.

Don't fall so easily for the same PR BS that fabricates quotes from their own studio heads.

VincentVanBro2h ago

Nah I’ll wait for the best version on PC lol

JEECE1h ago

I mean that's certainly the thinking, but for most PC gamers that just won't work. Like in a rare circumstance if someone was already on the fence about a console that might get them to take the plunge and buy a PlayStation, but it will be the exception rather than the rule.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 1h ago
romulus231h ago

You're mistakenly speaking for all PC gamers, there are bound to be some people who are not willing to wait and for Sony those are potential console buyers.

helicoptergirl9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

"While Helldivers 2 was released day and date on both PS5 and PC, don’t expect single-player narrative-driven games to be released in the same boat by Sony anytime soon. - This was confirmed by PlayStation’s soon-to-be co-CEO Hermen Hulst in Sony’s business segment presentation"

There you have it. Won't be 'day and date' single player games on PC anytime soon or for the forseeable future. They understand single player games are Playstation's backbone.

CrashMania7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

So much for the nonsense narrative that playstation is somehow failing so they are going to immediately start releasing every single game day and date on PC lol.

Elda5h ago

That is what the competition has to deal with.

Domkakop3h ago

Yea people tend to project the behavior of their favourite failing publisher onto Sony. Sony is not a failing publisher

Elda5h ago

Agreed. First & foremost Playstation not only wants to sell their AAA first party games but their gaming consoles to play them on that is why their AAA first party games come to PC later after it sells on PS consoles.

ocelot075h ago

I was told that Playstation was doing so bad on here and on X that Helldivers 2 was going to release on Xbox and Sony was going to start releasing all games on pc day and date with playstation. Why do people constantly lie on the internet!!!!!

I mean, its kinda looks like it's heading one way no? That "wait" is going to get shorter and shorter.

Fishy Fingers4h ago

It's happening.

God of War 2018 - 4 years
Horizon Zero dawn - 3 years
Horizon Forbidden West - 2 years

XiNatsuDragnel4h ago

That's a smart move because at the end of the day playstation is a hardware business and need to sell hardware folks

Steam Account Transfer Via Will on Death is Not Permitted, Valve Confirms

In case you were curious, a Steam account transfer via will is not permitted according to an official response from Valve.

anast2d ago

The games are theirs. People just pay to ride the ride.

Skuletor1d 7h ago

Would be nice if the article's writer looked into and reported whether other digital game libraries could be transferred over via will (Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, EGS, EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Launcher etc) instead of this half-baked piece but it's probably the same for all of them anyway

Kornholic1d 7h ago

This seems like a way bigger issue than mandatory PSN account linking for PlayStation games.

So where is the outcry?

Skuletor1d 6h ago

It's not like PlayStation is doing any different.

"You may not sell, buy, trade, or transfer your Online ID, Account or any personal access to PSN Services through any means or method, including by use of web sites."
https://www.playstation.com...

Kornholic11h ago

So you are that saying Steam is being very anti consumer with its policies. That's why I'm so baffled by the lack of outcry from the PC audience.

NotoriousWhiz1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

It's not like your account just stops working when you die. Include your email, account id, and password in the will (including the password to your email) and your survivors should have no problem using your games.

anast1d 4h ago

PC gamers are a different lot. They don't mind renting their games forever, they don't mind spending money on overpriced equipment, and they don't mind fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game, but linking a PSN account demands a riot. This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

Skuletor1d 3h ago

You sure talk a lot of nonsense.Go look up the percentage of digital sales compared to physical sales of PS5 games, then tell me again about "renting" games.

mandf1d 2h ago

Overblown funny and 100percent true

anast1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

There is no option at all to buy a physical copy of a PC game... And more people game on consoles for the reasons that make PC gamers a different lot.

VIK21211d ago

it's not so much the linking but the fact that certain countries aren't allowed to access psn...

VIK21211d ago

@anast I have a disc ps5 since launch, initially I bought some disc games, but I can't be bothered to walk to a physical store nowadays... I just buy the titles when they go on special sale or gray market store like CDKeys...

DustMan1d ago

PSN was a different story altogether. It kept people who bought the game from playing in countries that PSN wasn't supported. I never understood the issue anyway.

I don't know if PC stuff is overpriced considering that you can buy a new video card with the same amount of money you'd spend over 5 or 6 years paying to play games online with a console. I'll never pay double to use the same connection. That is what I'll never understand about console gamers. "let me pay an extra hundred & twenty dollars a year to use the same internet I pay for monthly and use on literally every device in my home for free....except for my Playstation"

Extermin8or3_23h ago

@Skuletor about 50-60% of sales are digital for most games. Meaning 40-50% are physical....

anast23h ago

@VIK

You might not but you are not the expectation that creates a universal.

Skuletor22h ago

@Extermin8or3_
Right and where are you getting that information from?
https://www.statista.com/st...

@anast

"Renting games"
In the fourth fiscal quarter of 2023, approximately 77 percent of Sony Corporation's PlayStation gaming sales were generated via digital downloads.

"overpriced equipment"
Some people are willing to pay a premium for better performance, the way you keep talking about the PS5 Pro on N4G proves you're a hypocrite in that regard but whatever, lol

"fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game"
Most pc games will give the option to scan your system to choose recommended settings or start with moderate settings that will run the game fine but you're free to mess around at your own leisure, to improve performance or quality if you wish to. For those that don't want to, there's free software that can do that for you, such as Nvidia's Geforce or AMD's AMD Catalyst. Geforce Experience even gives you the option of choosing whether to prioritize performance vs image quality with a simple slider for easy optimization, it's not rocket science, like you try make it out to be.

"linking a PSN account demands a riot"
Playstation selling Helldivers 2 in regions without the legal means to create a PSN account by Sony's own standards, then telling people in those regions that already bought the game that they can no longer play the game, isn't a cause for concern? Though you've already heard about that but keep going along with your own narrative because of your weird vendetta against PC on here.

This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

PRIMORDUS17h ago

I don't rent I torrent to keep, if they take them down that's ok I don't care I have them LOL. I do buy PC games but very little as I want full control which is why I torrent to keep them in my collection, and I do not give a fuck what the devs or publishers want. I never did never will.

anast3h ago

@DustMan

Just like you can choose play games on low to barely mid settings for the price of a PS5, you can also choose not to game online on the PS5. So, now you are getting a better gaming experience and not paying extra for online.
