The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - DF Tech Review - Is It Really 'Too Big for Switch'...?

Digital Foundry : It's finally here - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sees Nintendo at the very top of its game, delivering a game that builds and expands upon the original Breath of the Wild in many different dimensions... but is the scale of the ambition really 'too big for Switch'...? John Linneman has answers.

Yeah. The problem of Nintendo are the limitations of the switch. But everybody knows that

ZycoFox774d ago

Indeed, Nintendo can make certain games shine, like Mario Party where games with smaller areas/less going on look great. When it's more than that the system struggles.

Lexreborn2774d ago

I find it amazing how much people are willing to overlook bad presentation, bad performance, barren areas with dumb AI and give Nintendo a pass.. every… single… time.

It literally never fails

xMcVillainx774d ago

I think Nintendo should partner with a pc launcher and release its games on pc with mod support. Right now they don’t have the best image when it comes to supporting it’s fans and I think this would gain them the performance angle and the caring about the community badge again. PlayStation and Microsoft both now release on PC. What is Nintendo so afraid of?

Zhipp774d ago

Both had some of the better ai in recent memory.

repsahj774d ago

I think you didn't watch the whole DF video. XD

I_am_Batman774d ago

I don' think it's overlooked. Most peoply simply adjust their expectations for performance and graphical fidelity when playing an open world game on a 6 year old handheld. The devs seemingly did a great job considering the technical limitations they were working under.

I personally think that a 6+ year life cycle is too long for a device that was low end when it launched, but I wouldn't hold that against the game.

senorfartcushion774d ago

Because the games are fun and possess charm. They’re not trying to constantly nickel and dime their customer bases. Sony first party exclusive games get as much love.

Xbox are the only ones who suffer because they can’t commit to making a proper single player AAA experience.

Knushwood Butt774d ago

Wasn't a higher difficulty level sold as paid DLC for Breath of the Wild?

Keep drinking that Flavor Aid.

Neonridr774d ago

@Knushwood - along with Master Sword trials and a bunch of other stuff. But yes, it was just the difficulty level according to you.

Knushwood Butt774d ago

So they sold a difficulty level.

Thanks for confirming.

I'll now go to check on the meaning of, 'nickel and dime customers' just in case.

Kneetos774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

It's a bit hypocritical that people here spent the past 6+ years complaining that we stop comparing Nintendo switch sales to playstation because its "just a handheld" and the playstation 4, and now 5 are these big home consoles and they are different, only for them now to come here and get mad because Zelda doesn't look or run like a game on playstation but people enjoy it anyway because it's a marvelous handheld game running on 2015 tech

The "Nintendo gets a free pass" is a myth created by Sony fans as a way to constantly move the goalposts

Yes, Sony would get bodied for releasing games at sub 1080p and 30fps
But Sony spent the entire ps5 lifespan flaunting how it's this big 4k machine, capable of up to 120fps, they better not release a game running like Zelda does

Despite the Switch being underpowered they deliver better games than Xbox who has more power but lesser games.

Rdeal774d ago (Edited 774d ago )

i bet if Zelda was a Xbox game it would be scoring 6's, let be honest the game looks a mess and the ai is the worst i have seen and the combat is laughable but because it's Nintendo they get a pass.
You say their games are better than Xbox game but i would sooner play both Ori games than this because they don't look like something made in the early 2000's. it says a lot when games on mobile games look 10x better than a console game and another thing everybody was saying 30fps was unplayable a week ago but this just about makes 30

774d ago
senorfartcushion774d ago

If it was an Xbox game it would have forced Co-op and microtransactions

Gaming4Life1981774d ago

Why bring Xbox into this lol, zelda is one the best franchises ever. Xbox needs to step its game up especially this year when it comes to AAA titles

Limitedtimestruggle774d ago

Happy it seems to hold 30fps most of the time..but man those drops to the 20's looks rough! Can't wait to jump into the game today!

Limitedtimestruggle774d ago

BoTW had some brutal drops as well indeed! Not gonna lie.

FinalFantasyFanatic774d ago

I honestly didn't really have this issue with BoTW personally, it ran fine for me most of the time.

senorfartcushion774d ago

Me too. Stuff like that gets overblown.

badz149774d ago

other games at 30fps - "OMG what a deal breaker!"

Nintendo's games at 30fps - "AMAZING!"

and they said there is no double standards when it comes to Nintendo. SMH

senorfartcushion774d ago

The hardware doesn’t justify an fps increase

FinalFantasyFanatic774d ago

No one told us it would be 60fps and then delivered 30fps instead, I don't think anyone expects high performance out of the Switch.

GameBoyColor774d ago

other games are on hardware that should handle 60fps. I don't get what you guys are on about lol. Is every ps5 game bad because they don't run at 120fps that sony was pushing hard as a feature? lol

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom (Switch 2) -A Sublime Sequel, Now Sublimer| NintendoLife

"When all's said and done, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is a fantastic revamp of perhaps Nintendo's most sublime sequel. What was once a technical marvel on aged hardware now has a chance to truly shine, with visual and performance boosts undoubtedly making it the definitive way to play.

Nothing will ever match the feeling of playing it for the first time, of course, and some bonus content would have been welcome, but armed with Zelda Notes and the promise of buttery smooth upgrades, I'd challenge anyone to dip back in without losing hours to its unrivalled wonder." - Jim Norman | NintendoLife

I argue that simple res/FPS bumps should be free, and then you can charge $10 if it includes actual extra content. That seems to be what has been settled on.

Many PS4 games got free upgrades for PS5 when just increasing res/FPS. Days Gone, for example, got a free FPS bump to start the generation. Now it's getting a "remaster", improved visuals/extra modes/content for $10.

I know they have *some* free upgrades - though we don't know what they entail - but the Zelda games just seem like they know they can get money from eager new buyers, so why not. Zelda Notes doesn't quite seem to justify $10, but hey, let us choose. Make it a $10 app, and give the res/FPS upgrades for free.

CrashMania58d ago

Weird the Jamboree pack being 20 with no new boards or minigames for party mode, way to miss the mark. Minigame variety is seriously lacking for the party mode compared to superstars, my biggest issue with the game, think I'll pass on that.

L3e58d ago

I wonder if there will be supply issues (unable to find the system). Interesting that they are launching in the middle of the year as well.

gold_drake57d ago

some of these are abit pricey.
like why?

neutralgamer199257d ago

It's Nintendo they know they can get away with it. Bits that simple

Dhika57d ago

Why the differences in prices?
