Microsoft gaming CEO Phil Spencer indicates that Xbox may not be able to outsell Nintendo and PlayStation consoles, but it doesn't have to to compete.
Xbox is great at using disruption and innovation to compete in the video games market, but it may not be able to outsell PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. Luckily, this is less important to Xbox than it is to its competitors.
Hogwarts Legacy has remained in first place on the UK retail charts, according to GfK data for the week ending April 19, 2025.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, following the release of the PS5 version, came in second place.
Astro Bot dropped one spot to third place, while Monster Hunter Wilds remained in fourth place. Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is up one spot to fifth place and EA Sports FC 25 is up six spots to sixth place.
Playstation owners buy games.
Strange seeing Hogwarts there as I downloaded it for my son from PS Plus a couple of days ago.
Some of the best PS5 games are exclusives like God of War Ragnarok and Astro Bot, but there are some indie highlights as well.
The PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide with 1,137,164 units sold for March 2025, according to VGChartz estimates. The PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 75.28 million units lifetime worldwide.
The Nintendo Switch sold an estimated 547,216 units to bring its lifetime sales to 150.25 million units. The Xbox Series X|S sold 263,531 units to bring their lifetime sales to 32.73 million units.
Year-on-year so far:
PS5
• Jan. -31%
• Feb. -7%
• Mar. -11.1%
X|S
• Jan. -48%
• Feb. -21%
• Mar. -27.5%
Funny how the console with 'no games' outsells its key competitor by nearly 1 million units.
The only thing this site talks about anymore is Xbox and how PlayStation is better in every article. None of you are talking about games anymore. The PS-Only people especially, is it because PS5 has had sort of a new game drought for a bit now?
I will post this same comment in the threads to prove this.
😆
Innovation? Hmm. How? Where is it this gen? I see Halo, Forza, and pub acquisitions. I see safe hardware. Quick Resume? Sure..? Gamepass isn't new and honestly is based on the PS+ games library philosophy of PS3 era. PSNow to a degree also. Sony even tried to do the play anywhere thing, or mapped it way before it was viable. Kinda. Umm where is the XB innovation? New AAA first party IP were non existent pre acquisitions. Ppl use that word too loosely. Innovation.
**Luckily, this is less important to Xbox than it is to its competitors.**(about hardware)
**(...across the last 10 years, Microsoft has laid out an inter-connected infrastructure that joins four separate platforms into a cohesive network of subscriptions, monetization, and purchases)**
How this is any good from an apologist is anyone's guess.
Hardware is important. Doesn't matter what some say. You need hardware to sell content. Doesn't matter if it's consoles, phones, PCs, etc. Microsoft minimizes consoles sales as if it doesn't matter. But they still have to rely on hardware sales of others to get that content out there. You don't slack on one hoping the others pick up the slack. You BUILD on your own sales of hardware while adding sells of content on other platforms. Doesn't mean they have to outsell Nintendo or Sony.
I used to buy all the consoles I could because each had games the other console didn't. Didn't matter that Sega sold more consoles or Nintendo did. I wanted Metroid and Zelda. But I also wanted Streets of Rage and Shinobi.
But if you're not providing anything different than your competitors, why would I even consider buying your product? And, I'm not going to buy your product to be monetized or sold on subscriptions or paying for services I wasn't really interested in anyway. That's why I buy the games I like. Because I'm more interested in those. Not peruse through games that might just waste my time.
No matter what these individuals say, if you sell great hardware, great software, someone is going to buy it. They'll buy them all if they can afford it and have the time to enjoy them. The excuse that gamers have a digital library that carries over that prevents gamers from buying something else is an outright lie. Nothing stops a consumer from building a huge library across systems. Microsoft just doesn't want to put in the work. Spent years trying to take away. And now it's biting them in the ass for not investing in their future like Sony or Nintendo.
Instead of tearing the industry, they should invest the BILLIONS into their studios and make games. They prefer to play this shitty game and deprive others becaise they have no intent to create.
MS started this when they bragged about 360 sales. Now they're are getting bodied and sales don't matter.
