Would You Pay For A Mid-Gen PlayStation 5 Pro Or Xbox Series Y Upgrade?

We are far enough into this console generation where, like last console generation, the idea of a mid-gen PlayStation and Xbox upgrade is starting to be a topic of conversation.

Day 1 PS5 PRO. Just announce it, set a release date and I'd place my pre order on Amazon.

Jin_Sakai761d ago (Edited 761d ago )

Same. Could sell my PS5 and cover 3/4 the cost of the PS5 Pro.

Aloymetal761d ago

Yes, that's the plan. That's what I did with my PS4 PRO, sold it to Amazon 2 months before the PS5's official release date.

blackblades761d ago

I would sell my OG ps4 considering I have a pro and ps5 but my mental state doesnt allow selling anything I own.

SullysCigar760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

I'd need to see something worthwhile t o tempt me into a PS5 Pro, but I'm happy with what I've got for a while yet, I'd say.

Xbox might want a mid-gen refresh after this latest news. Or a restart.

Xbox Y? It works on so many levels.

jznrpg760d ago

I would give my kids and wife my old PS5 and Pro for me. That’s what I did last gen with PS4.

jznrpg760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

@backblades I sell extra copies of unopened games for profit sometimes but I never sell my consoles for some reason. Maybe I’m just too lazy to do it. I have 2 PS4’s and a Pro still . My kids use the Pro right now but I don’t know why I haven’t sold the other PS4’s.
You made me think about it as I don’t even remember they are there.
I should bundle them up and go give them to some kids that can’t afford it with some games I don’t want. Thanks for the thought.

blackblades760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

@jznepg
I still have all my systems even the dead fat ps3. It makes sense to sell for $ earlier on but paying a good amount for something and selling it for less then half the price is meh also a mental thing that I just dont wanna sell anything and its not hoarding. Just to also note lol i still have old tips & tricks mags and others mags even printed guides.

For a PS5 upgrade I would because I know I get my money’s worth.

Aloymetal760d ago

This! That's why I don't hesitate to buy whenever they announce a new/better model because sooner or later those great games will be there.

CorndogBurglar760d ago

But.....they haven't even quit making cross-gen games yet. We don't even know what the PS5 is fully capable of yet. Why would I want to go spend another $500 when we still don't even know what the PS5 can really do?

--Onilink--760d ago

Also, given that the PS5 is actually $550 right now, a Pro would certainly not cost less than that haha

REDGUM760d ago

A very valid point you make there!

KyRo760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

I personally wouldn't. I don't feel there's been any games have been held back from lack of power. I feel there's only been a handful of games that have truly shown us us what next gen can do. I really want last gen to be dropped so we can finally see what these machine can produce. Sonys own studios seem to be the only ones showing us what next gen is atm. Everything else seems like last gen with faster loads times and a higher frame rate.

The PS4 Pro made sense with the growth of 4K in the early 2010s. 8K is not viable for a lot of people and a lot of people aren't interested atm

seanpitt23760d ago

If I can get 60 fps ultra settings dynamic 4K no compromises I will get one.. fed up of picking either performance or graphics!

neutralgamer1992760d ago

no because next gen hasn't even properly been started. Let's get 18-24 months of true next gen games before there is a mid gen upgrade. also contrary to popupar beliefe those mid gen upgrades didn't sell well compared to their older counterparts

God no

We need to stop mid gen consoles, we can't even leave last gen behind properly at the minute

What's the point when you will never be able to truly take advantage because not everyone has them and developers always want parity. Those who do choose to work extra on additional features will be a small portion of developers.

Just wait until a full on next gen console where it can "wow" us more.

Snookies12761d ago

Yeah, I can say the PS4 Pro definitely wasn't worth it. I only bought it because my old PS4 was dying. So, I figured I'd just go ahead and get the better version. Definitely not going for a mid-gen upgrade again. It's nice if you don't have the original, but it's not going to be worth the cost of the upgrade 99% of the time.

ABizzel1760d ago

The PS4 Pro was a learning process, and didn't have all the tools it needed to be the upgrade it could have been. A better example would be the Xbox One vs the Xbox One X, where resolutions skyrocketed, games had better textures and quality at times, and more games had performance modes.

A theoretically PS5 Pro, would have a similar CPU but possible based on Ryzen 5000 laptop CPUs which is needed for much better performance in Unreal Engine 5 (the main reason the mid-gen consoles would be needed).

An updated GPU utilizing RDNA 3 (much better RT cores and the potential for FSR 3.0 for Fake Framerate Generation). Basically a laptop versions of the RX 7900xt / RX 7800xt / RX 7700xt (whenever the desktop version is announced this summer).

More VRAM 20GB - 24GB with higher memory bandwidth, the lesson they learned from the PS4 Pro, and that XBO-X didn't make.

And possibly a larger internal NVMe 1.65 TF.

From a hardware perspective maybe more USB and Type-C ports, vastly improved Direct-Connect support (for remote play on par with Wii U to tablet controller), optional audio ports for current home theater compatibility, etc...

CobraKai760d ago

I bought a Pro cuz the 4 was constantly being used by the wife and kids. I needed one for myself. Other than that, I had no real reason to upgrade.

blackblades761d ago (Edited 761d ago )

I honestly think there isnt gonna be a mid gen. Just because it happened once doesn't mean it'll happened again. I know Sony said there wasnt gonna be another but that's if you trust them then theres the so called rumors which you cant really trust.

CorndogBurglar760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

Right. And didn't they stop making PS4 Pros long before the new gen launched anyway? It makes me wonder how successful they really were. If they were selling truckloads of them why would they stop manufacturing them years before the new gen launched?

IanTH760d ago (Edited 760d ago )

They've also said, pretty exhaustively, that mid-gen happened because of the rise in 4K TV ownership. 4K TVs finally got cheap, everyone had them, and PS4/XBO were designed for 1080p max. All the Pro/X was primarily intended for was to give you a sharper picture on your new set, especially as average TV size went up so those pixels got stretched over a larger canvas (and at non-native resolutions).

There's no threat of something like 8K being around the corner like 4K was. At best, a mid-gen refresh would have to do something like give more RT performance, add hardware for improved upscaling or frame-generation...something outside raster performance, basically.

Perhaps the need will become apparent after last-gen gets fully dropped, and more games struggle to give a good-looking 60fps performance mode. Ultimately seems like a harder sell now than before, especially on top of a less stable economy.

ABizzel1760d ago

The main benefit will be performance, specifically in regards to native resolutions being upscaled and framerates.

There are 120fps games, but almost none of them are consistent, they often in the 80s - low 100s, a new mid-gen console fixes that. PSVR2 in particular would benefit greatly from games being native 120hz, instead of the pseudo 90Hz they have to use in some games.

Games that start using UE5 will be drastically more demanding, with the upcoming batch on PC using the full feature set of Lumen and Nanite, requiring RTX 2080 levels of performance (aka a tad above console performance with much better RT hardware) just for 1080p resolutions. A new mid-gen consoles fixes that and can bump the resolution up to Native 1440p which is significantly better for FSR support to upscale to 4K with less blur and artifacts in the image.

The potential for FSR 3.0 in a niche number of games, can dramatically increase performance as well too, especially in games that needs fluid motion, so games that end up being 30fps capped on old consoles, can instead be capped at 40fps with higher resolutions, and with the potential of FSR 3.0 run basically as smooth as a locked 60fps or unlocked 60 - 100fps.

Finally it refreshes the business for the manufacturer's, so they get a wave of sales from Day 1 buyers, upgrading while they're also able to get the original/slim models down to a more consumer friendly price. So technologically and game-wise there's merit, especially considering that AMD ensures their GPUs are backwards compatible with GNC which is helps Sony keeps PS4 BC running.

Bobertt760d ago

Yeah we haven't even had true next gen games yet. God of War and Horizon looked nice but they weren't true next gen they were cross gen. The only reason for a mid gen upgrade is if they screwed up and the PS5 is under powered and can't run the games they want properly. But that isn't the case so far.

StarkR3ality760d ago

I think a big part of the last mid gen refresh was to tick that 4K box as well as it was becoming more and more common. What display tech has come out recently that would warrant an upgrade?

I don't know a single person with an 8K TV and I'm the only person I know irl that has a 4K LG C1 Oled. Most people dont give a shit about 4k, 8K ain't coming anytime soon if ever, got to the point of diminishing returns with resolution.

I’m waiting for a slim version of both consoles. I really think they both have more than enough power. Hell, we haven’t really received a truly next gen game yet. So, slim them down and if they do an upgrade, wait another two years.

FallenAngel1984761d ago

That’s what I’m doing. I’m too accustomed to slim PlayStation consoles at this point

rlow1760d ago

I agree, when I saw how big the PS5 was. I remember thinking, holy shit, where would I put it? Lol. I’m really hoping they will follow through this generation.

blackblades761d ago

Waiting must suck I bet. Like what happens if there wasnt a slim or pro on the way, a what if scenario. All that waiting would be for nothing and the next gen would about to start.

rlow1761d ago

I can wait for at least the next two. By then the first wave of true next gen games will be discounted and they’ll start to really push the hardware.

Demetrius760d ago

Ikr a lot is so cross gen, there were only a couple of games that even pushed the ps4/Xboxone they slick held back now it’s like that’s happening all over again

rlow1760d ago

Probably the last generation that really pushed the hardware, especially towards the end was the Xbox/PS3 era. I believe, especially on the PS3, that their was a lot more juice under the hood.

porkChop760d ago

Agreed. We really don't need more power. We need smaller consoles and no cross gen games.

isarai761d ago

Maybe eventually, but we haven't even really gotten this gen started due to the huge focus on cross gen development this gen. I'd honestly feel a bit ripped off

Knightofelemia761d ago

Unless it was a PS6 I am good with my PS5 right now. If Sony dropped a PS5 slim I would consider it.

_SilverHawk_1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

It's actually a good game. Its slower than recent battlefield titles but the gunplay is quite good. I like it. Hopefully I'm able to play the beta when its released but I haven't experienced anything i don't like other than a few bugs thats expected in pre-alpha
