Resident Evil 4 GameCube is 20 Years Old

The classic Resident Evil 4 GameCube release, the title that redfined the hugely popular series, debuted 20 years ago today.

Zeldafan64100d ago (Edited 100d ago )

Bought it the day it came out. Probably the most graphically impressive GameCube game.

cammers1995100d ago

Resident evil 1 remake looks better.

Zeldafan64100d ago (Edited 100d ago )

It looks great but it's also pre-rendered backgrounds in tight, enclosed spaces. From a technical perspective RE4 is more impressive.

Agent75100d ago

I'd say Resident Evil Zero which was canned on the Nintendo 64 and ported to the GameCube.

Neonridr100d ago

I still give it up to Factor 5 with Rogue Squadron 2 and 3. Those games look amazing still today. They squeezed a lot out of that box.

RE4 was no slouch either though.

Tacoboto100d ago

I think I'd give it to Metroid Prime and Echoes. 60fps with all those particle effects, and Samus' reflections.

The Remaster on Switch and Trilogy version on Wii are actually missing certain graphical effects.

The most influential game of all time. Along with the movie Aliens, it has shaped the industry.

Bought a GameCube for Resident Evil. Everything else was just extra.

Didn't feel like a horror game.

Eidolon103d ago

I thought it shifted away from survival and horror, taking on a more action style, but in a good way.

goken103d ago

It did for me. The opening village segment was great and memorable.

It’s still horror, just not so much survival horror

ZeekQuattro103d ago

I still go back to this pretty much every year. Never gets old to me.

Eidolon102d ago

You HAVE to play it in VR, it's absolutely amazing.

DodoDojo103d ago

I'm hoping the updated version gets released on the next Switch, I'd love to have it portable.

Yui_Suzumiya102d ago

I'm sure all the REmakes and newer entries will be on Switch 2. Looking forward to it!

Didnt enjoy this as much as I thought I would of seeing how the orginal 4 is my favorite entry in the series next to RE 2. That's the better remake imo.

Nerdmaster108d ago

I agree. I bought the original 4 for GameCube, PS2, Wii and PC, played it countless times, but something about the remake just didn't really click with me. I finished it once, tried playing it again, but didn't go far the second time.
Meanwhile, in the original 4 I couldn't wait to replay it after finishing it.

Cacabunga107d ago

I bought it over a year and half ago and still didn’t bother to play it.. I will wait until there is nothing to play to try it.

RE2 is a great game! Gave me the oldschool vibes

RE4 remake is amazing, however, I feel Shooting is a little more difficult compared to the original... Like there's a delay I can't seem to get use too which frustrates me because I can't get consistent head shots.

Concertoine108d ago

I like some aspects of the design in RE2R but the sewer level is a big drag on repeat playthroughs for me. RE4 doesn’t have a dull moment imo. It’s super fun to replay.

Storm23107d ago

Interesting. I loved the original like crazy and loved the remake also. Haven't played RE2 remake. It's on my crazy long list of games to play.

gleepot107d ago

Don't worry, you can have a bad opinion.

-Foxtrot107d ago

I liked both of them the same

Resident Evil 4 Remake was fantastic to the point the only nitpick I can give it when comparing it to the original is Ada's new voice actor who was so bad. The original might have had some cheesy voice acting and dialogue but Sally Cahill was a better Ada 20 years ago.

Just finished this on Jan 1st. Intense final stretch! Game still holds up. 👍

Chocoburger107d ago

Just got done playing a session on PSVR 2. Its a lot of fun and a worthy remake of the original Mikami masterpiece. I'll play more tomorrow! 😁

Babadook7107d ago

I really really loved it on PSVR2. Personally RE8 is my favourite though.

legendkilla107d ago

I've been having a blast playing in VR too!

TLOU2 sold 10m in less time and on PS4 only. Many Druckmann haters like to pretend it's a flop and that Japanese games like this are what the people want.

-Foxtrot107d ago

What's that got to do with Resident Evil?

I'll bite though. TLOU2 got 4 million at launch and yet it then suddenly took them 2 years to get to that 10 million despite the great momentum at the start. Also unlike other games released around the same time frame like Doom Eternal, FFVII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima etc it was discounted a lot earlier and more discounted in comparison. I remember seeing it online that following December at GAME for like £19.99 and when it came to the PSN it was also reduced more compared to some others.

God of War 2018 resulted in 3.1 million at launch (a figure lower that TLOU2 at launch), however in ONE year it was revealed to have reached 10 million copies sold.

Ghost of Tsushima, a brand new IP, managed to get 9.73 million sales within 2 years and that only released a month after TLOU2. That's super close to 10 million and with the game being brand new it had no fanbase already backing it in terms of hype and anticipation.

Yeah 10 million is a great number but lets not kid ourselves, with the hype and love for that franchise I bet you any money Sony were anticipating it to have done a lot bigger with how much was going for it. It's not a failure in the traditional sense but Sony were clearly hoping to get a lot more sales within that time frame.

generic-user-name83d ago

Apologies for the long delay, I was away. Anyway, Doom/Ghost/FFVIIR etc didn't have to deal with a massive, malicious leak that spread a 4chan false narrative about the game and spoiled huge key moments in a game that was mostly anticipated for its story. To still hit 10m despite all of that going against it in 1.5 years and on PS4 only, was a triumph. God of War 2018 was brought down to $40 within 6 months of launch permanently (Oct 2018), but this fact is never brought up when TLOU2 price cuts are for some reason.

Meanwhile the remake for the greatest horror of all time (allegedly), Silent Hill 2, just now hits 2 million after 3 months on 3 platforms and this is a celebration.
