Achievements vs Trophies

"As an RPG enthusiast am I attracted to the leveling up aspect of Trophies? I do like the tiered Trophies with bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. I can tell you that a 10g Achievement has the same felling of a bronze Trophy, and a Platinum Trophy had the same feeling of scoring a complete 1000g. I do not have a comparison for gold or silver because there really is not any as a developers can assign any point value to any Achievement. I know what I am getting when I unlock a Trophy".

Implementation doesn't beat execution, Trophies are just better executed.

Visual representation of the difficulty, divided into categories and then progression for your experience stature.

Upon successful completion of a game (100%) you gain a platinum trophy which stands out a lot more than 25 gamer points ... lol.

trophies are not at all better than achievements. Yea, you could go aound beating the kiddie games for 1000g, but if your a freak who really cares about that, you have the ability to compare games with everyone on Xbox Live. So like i said, if you see a guy with 50k gamerscore and your freaking out about whether he got that high score by beating games like Surf's Up and Kung Fu Panda, feel free to look at every game he's played, and deduct all the kiddie games from his score so you'll know how much he's really earned. Dont wanna go through all that trouble huh? well, you should, because you cared enough to complain about it in the first place.

i just like the point system better, i like seeing my score grow because i know i play the hardcore games like Mass Effect, Halo, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Fallout, etc. and i know that i, myself, earned all my points and thats all that matters to me. i dont care about other people's scores really.

You can compare games on the PS3 as well. Just click on any user name and any games you have will show up next to any games that they have. If you have the same game, you can see which trophies you have that they don't and vice-versa.

The entire game list that they have played will appear, and you can look at any trophies they have earned in those games.

The total "score" appears as a level. You can view your level in comparison to other peoples' levels, and see where you can improve your ranking. What you are talking about is really the same thing.

I fail to see any difference other than the name and the number that represents them. I have 20k plus gamer-score and a level 5 trophy score. So I think i've got enough of both to know if there's a difference between the two. The only reason I like getting trophies more now is because I have so few trophies compared to achievement's.

Technically yeah, and personally neither bother me to much, but I prefer the way the PS3 displays them, showing how many of each achievement/trophy level (bronze, silver, gold, plat) you've acquired and the Rank is easier on the eye than an overall score (IMO).

One thing I like about achievements is that they are included in ALL 360 games from start and you never have to wait for games to get trophy patches as with PS3 games. Would be nice if they were retroactive but unfortunately that's not the case.

The difference is that achievements were properly implemented. All 360 games have achievements from start, even downloadable arcade games. That makes the gamerpoints more meaningful as a measurement of how many 360 games you've played for how long etc.

People said trophies would be added to all PS3 games pretty quickly but as it's turned out only a handful of games support them as of now. They aren't even retroactive, which renders the trophy patches useless unless you want to replay games you've already completed just to get trophies.

i used to collect achievements first, but since my 360 had a lot of issues, i moved to ps3, and now with the trophies, it's a bit different, because it has a level system, which the 360 doesn't have, but on the other hand, 360 has more games that support achievements, so i really can't pick, but if (later) every game will have trophies, then i will go for the trophies, and not achievements.

i understand your point that they are giving you the same outcome of replayability, but for people that compare stats to their friends, trophies are much better at determining who's better. seeing a level 7 person with no platinum trophies says something to me. achievements you cant see the difference, points are points.

They are different by only a small margin but not enough to really say which is better.

Most people compare achievements and there are some pretty hard ones out there. I can just tell from a person who has more achievements than me, bigger gamerscore, Overall more achievement points than my own in a game that they are better than me, and most likely know more and game twice as much as I do.

Stats with trophys is almost pointless depending on the game, Mostly shooters that carry their own stat system, are the only real way to check how good a person is, so you would either need their game or you would have to check online. Both systems are flawed, but both serve the same purpose.

Achievements are more flexible. Assigning a "colour" limits flexiblity. Developers can make as many as they like, and give them any relative Achievement (Gamerscore) value as they wish. Its totally flexible.

Gold = 1
Silver = 2
Plat = 3

You do realize that all multiplatform games will have the same trophies/achievements, right? So saying that achievements are more flexible is a pretty moot point.

Actually I just looked and there is no achievement for getting all other achievements in Fallout 3. That is where the Platinum comes in. And there actually is a score system involved, its just behind the scenes.

Bronze - 15
Silver - 30
Gold - 90
Platinum - 180

And when you add them up, in Dead Space, PS3's trophies are worth 1,185 points. The achievements are worth 1,000. So not only are you getting more 'points', you have a trophy that says, "I got all the other trophies in this game".

I'm not going to say which system is better. Obviously I only have a PS3 so trophies are my poison. I'm just presenting facts. The only reason I would lean towards trophies is because A)Its not an arbitrary number and B)There is a visual representation of how dedicated/skilled a gamer you are. Like I said up top, If I see a gamercard with 20,000 points, how can I tell if he beat 20 games 100% or if he half-a$$ed his way through 40 games.

Your point being? 100 GP's from Call of Duty 4 compared to (theoretically) 2 Gold trophies or 1 platinum trophy is a measure of visual success, not a number that is unaccounted for after you're done. The fact that every title has AP on the 360 was a distinct advantage from 2005-08. As a playstation supporter, I have already given props several times to MS for the AP/trophy concept. Even to the point that I recommend older titles like Assassin's Creed, SC4, and SW:FU to the 360 over their PS3 counterparts. And I agree Sony should've made their own engineers if needed to retroactively patch in trophy support for all PS3 exclusives. I can't get too upset that MGS4, Valkyrie Chronicles, and even Haze didn't have them since RFOM, R&C, HS, and Lair didn't either. Thank God it's 2009 and all games henceforth will have trophies.

To any real 360 FANs (not trolls), would you guys mind seeing MS use something like a star to denote mastered games? So when you click on your friends, before having to access his GS and individually check his games, you'd see he has a 50K score and 11 stars next to it on the main page? Seems to be the only difference between A/T (platinums), ironic that AP load much quicker than trophies, yet it's easier to determine what type of gamer he is on the PS3.

I'd give achievements more props if the whole game-save download craze didn't start, but I still give it props for starting the whole trend. I'm more focused on trophies though since I've been able to work on getting them since they were first implemented. By the time I started on achievements, I was way behind from people on my friends list and worldwide so I didn't really bother being competitive. I'm actually kinda proud of my gamerscore since I'm not on my 360 as much, yet I still have a higher score than alot of people that always play their 360 alot, or in N4G's case, the people that support the 360 without even playing it.

If you're gonna support your system, get some damn gamerscore points unless you JUST got your system last month. Don't talk about a system not having any games when you rarely play games on the system you support.

there is no risk of losing your trophies...its just that the PS3 syncs with the online servers differently than XBL...XBL does it when you get the achievement...the PSN updates when you look at your score card thing, or when you compare your trophies with others...thats all...

personally the level system of trophies is far more appealing than the arbitrary gamer score of XBL imo...seeing someone being a 'level 8' makes a lot more sense than someone having a score of 56,910...there is absolutely no way to argue against that...other than that, the two services are nearly identical...

That's my opinion. I know Sony needed something for aspirations but Trophys, to me are stupid.

I see Achievements as a whole 100% pie and the more you unlock the more of this Pie that is eaten up, which adds to a total, that is a given number.

You can look at that number and see who spends a lot of time on games they buy, whether for the replay value or just being Achievements whores. Of course this number does not represents skill but IMO is a better representation of a gamer, than getting a medal which is very generic, as in every sport.

They are merely *relative* values, and those values -- in the Achievement system are infinite, and decided by the value assigned by the developer.

They can have "9" trophy colours;
Platinum, Green, White, Yellow, Gold, Purple, Orange, Black, Silver.
9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1

Where 9 > 1 and Platinum > Silver.

Its the **RELATIVE** value between each achievement that is important, and is expressed as a cumulitive GamerScore.

Sony's system is simply less flexible. And frankly, pretending that "colours" are a better method of quantification is retarded.

I don't care which is better. All I know is trophies got me to go back and play Uncharted again. I'm playing through it on Crushing mode now. After that I'll need two more trophies and I'll have them all. I don't care if other people know it or not. It gets you to play the game more and try to get more done. Uncharted already kind of had this in it anyway. It's great to give gamers a reason to keep playing your game. I've played through Uncharted so many times now I don't think Crushing will be that tough.

To me Hard was tougher than Crushing. On Hard the enemies hang back and throw nades and shoot, in Crushing the AI is so confident that they rush you...which makes it easy as hell to just blindfire them.

Hard wasn't that hard for me. I liked being able to reload my ammo all the time and choose weapons. In Crushing that's disabled. I think I played Hard mode over about three days. Not a lot of hours at a time. Crushing so far seems tougher but I'm only around the 5th level. Uncharted is definitely a great game though. I rarely play any game as much as I'm playing Uncharted.

Wait..... Syncing up for trophy information.

C'mon the fact that the 360 supports Achievments for EVERY game, and that is easily accesible to not only compare ahcievements with friends but with randmom people, makes achievements the winner hands down.

And who cares if not EVERY game has trophies but starting 2009 they will. And why does anyone care if EVERY game on the 360 has achievements, are they seriously going to go and buy EVERY game to get achievements, no, well, maybe some but not all.

Having achievements on every game is good because you can see every single game a person has played and to what extent.

I don't know how trophies work but I presume if a game doesn't have trophies you cant see it in that players "games played" list.

Any way, As I said before I don't know much about trophies but they should be better since they came later than achievements.

as long as they have a internet connection it puts the game in there if youhave some or not it just says a Percent unless the game didnt have trophies then you are correct. SAME SAME SAE SAME SAME

As I type this my girl just got the trophy for gta4's qub3d arcade game.

The trophy sound is a loud bling sound. I love it & I love my girl.

Maybe I should be paying more attention to what's going on and actually notice that I get a trophy. I only have Warhawk, Pain, Tekken 5 and my friend's copy of LBP for the PS3, so you can say that I don't play much on it :p but I probably will once Killzone 2 and various other great exclusives get released.

It's nice to see someone who can comment with a laugh in the Open Zone :p

And the reason, is because it feels like you are working up to a full number for each game.. Each game has a certain number that you can reach.. mostly 1000. Also, the achievements have a much better function to see how well a person can game. If say I have 835GP on Fable 2 and my friend has 742GB, then it's easier to see that I may game more than he does and may be better than he is..(just an example). My friend got the achievement of jumping out of the plane at the end of CoD4 on Veteran mode.. I can NOT beat that game on Veteran mode.. it is nigh impossible for me. This clearly shows that he may be the better gamer for this certain type. With trophies, you don't have a certain score for each game.. you just have a color. And since you can get the same colors from multiple games.. it doesn't seem relevant that you are able to say you are better than someone else at a certain game. This is just my opinion though.

Yeah bud, you can see which trophies the person has gotten from each game. I like trophies because its not just a number. When I look at someones gamer score that's 20,000 (on a forum tag), how do I know he beat 20 games 100% and didn't just rent/play 40 games and half a$$ them. Obviously Sony sucks and still has not made something that links to your PSN and automatically updates, but when you look at a trophy card, you know how dedicated they are to the games.

For reference, there are about 48 to 52 trophies per retail game. About 40 bronze 6 silver 3 gold and 1 platinum....ish Platinum is of course for getting every other trophy.

That didn't show me what games you achieveved the trophies from.. it just showed me a number.. when I click on a game to look at achievements.. it makes a side-by-side comparison of who has what. Also, when you make a signature to show off achievements.. it says your total number of achievements, and then shows your recently most played games. You can click on those games to see how many achievements you have out of however many achievements those games offer. The tag you showed me only showed trophies from 1 game and the total amount of trophies you have. You are able to click on any game you see on the gamertag and see the progress the player has made on that one game.

Of course, I cant show you the full potential of this by just copying and pasting a URL to it.. If you were to view this gamertag from anywhere else, you would be able to open up the games that are shown and view their progress. You would also be able to click on the name of the gamer and view their stats.

Example:

I highlight a game listed on the gamertag and it tells me the name of the game.. then I click on the icon of the game and a blade slides over the gamercard and shows me (example): 200 of 1000. Then, underneath that, it ALSO gives me the number of achievements I have of that game.. (example): 6 of 40.

You last played Left 4 Dead 6 days ago! Sorry I wasn't clear enough. I never meant that you could see what games/trophies etc. people got on their card, but you can compare on your PS3. Hey I'll admit that Sony has nothing on Microsoft when it comes to their card. Sony doesn't even have a card. That picture I showed you is from playfire and you can see every little detail about someone on that site. The only catch is, its not automatic. You have to update everything. That's why I said Sony sucks. Microsoft's gamer card is light years ahead of Sony's...because it doesn't exist. So don't get me wrong. The gamercard rocks. It actually has links that tell you things. Its not just a picture. Etc. Etc.

Achievements are far better. They have a cool sound to them, and add up to your gamerscore. Also, they are standard on every game, unlike trophies. It makes me giddy every time an achievement pops up; yet when I play Resistance 2 and get trophies, I don't even notice.

You could say because trophies represent individual awards for certain actions they mean more, but if you have a ton of trophies who's going to actually look through them all? I think both trophies and gamerscores are excuses for people who wouldn't have enough creativity to try to do a certain thing in a game without being told to try it. I used to play basketball games against my friends and would go into the game telling them I was going to beat them using only one player scoring all my points or that I was only going to shoot 3 pointers. I should sue.

I don't really know. I hate the little bronze trophies that stop me from getting 100%.(Cause if you get every trophy except one in a game, it shows up at 74% or so cause the last ~25% is the platinum.) Trophies are the better IDEA, even through they are a rip off, but damn those bronze ones that are impossible.

Dont know about your issue since i dont understand trophies concept. Achievements are so simple to grasp. Theoratically each achievemnt can be rated from 0 - 1000 (1000 if the game has only one achievment). There are easy ones, hard ones, extremely difficult ones, middle ones etc and can easily be quantified by a number.

Lets say we get 100gs for completeing a level, and killing a big boss is 35gs, and killing him without losing a life would be another 20gs. SO how do trophies determine which achievement was harder to get. In ps3's case all you would get is 2 or 3 bronze and silver for level completion ? That does not sound rewarding at all.

Ha. So you're saying its ONLY 'rewording' when you see a number pop up? Like I said above, for me it is more rewarding to see those Platinum trophies than to see an arbitrary number. Looking at those trophy cards, you can see how many games someone has aced. Looking at a gamerscore card tells you nothing of the sort.

It takes about 10 seconds to load a trophy card and about 20 seconds to see every single trophy that someone has earned. The reason you still don't get the system is because you don't own a PS3.

Tropies are SO lame .. i still don't get the system. it takes minutes just to see someone's trophies and not every game supports it. A score is much better.

Achievements are the way to go. one look at the gamerscore is enough ..

There are to many fanboys here to even get an argument on which is better. 90% of the comments here comes from people who use one system and heard that the other existed.

I have both systems.

Overall though, they're the same damn thing and saying "x is better" is nothing by preference and not some scientific fact.

I like the trophies simply because I like the unlock sound effect more.
