PlayStation 5 has sold through more than 30 million units worldwide, Sony announced at its Consumer Electronics Show 2023 press conference. The console was last reported to have shipped 25 million
Honestly, kudos to Sony and PlayStation, this is fully deserved. When you look at what xbox has been up to, and where they are headed, I think any fair person/gamer would give Playstation the credit they deserve.
All things considered with the supply issues, this is a bonkers achievement. Well played - and it's probably still on the increase with the momentum they've got going here.
Meanwhile VGChartz still shows them over a million behind these official numbers. Wake up VGC guys!
I want to get one for sure. I like that you can buy a disc drive and slide it in to the console . If the drive ever dies you can replace it and that’s nice long term . I’m a collector and I really like more replaceable parts . Disc drive is probably the most likely to die with power supply next since SSD’s don’t die very fast like spinning drives do , they last a lot longer generally .With the disc drive being replaceable only need to learn how to replace a power supply which I doubt Is very hard . With the cooling PS5 has the cpu/gpu can last a very very long time .
"If the drive ever dies you can replace it and that’s nice long term . I’m a collector and I really like more replaceable parts"
This isn't going to be an off the shelve Blu-ray drive though. It'll be one produced by Sony specifically for the PS5 that has their encrypted FW etc. to stop piracy.
So not really useful for collectors, well not once Sony stop making PS5 accessories anyway. So not really any different from today.
@orchard...why must you butcher the English language?
Learn the difference and when to use the word 'shelf' vs 'shelve'.
Also stop spreading misinformation trying to sound smart or speaking just for the sake of speaking....blue ray drives are actually married to the motherboard while expandable hard drives are not.
@Sierra Calling out typos doesn’t cover up for the fact you don’t know what you’re talking about in the slightest.
“ blue ray drives are actually married to the motherboard while expandable hard drives are not”
No where above did I say storage drives are tied to the console itself (although they sort of do become tied to it once you format it for PS5). He isn’t talking about storage drives - he’s talking about the rumored PS5 redesign that has a removable/optional Blu-ray drive.
Today BR drives are indeed tied to the box itself - obviously this won’t be the case anymore if you can buy an optional addon to add a drive to your diskless PS5.
However, it will still need to be a PS5 official drive. You won’t be buying a random PC BR drive off of Newegg and putting it in your PS5 like you do today with the SSD.
Nope...wrong again. A proprietary removable drive will always be married to the device it was originally installed on. The only way around this is to desolder the chip with the encrypted data and resolder it onto the new drive.
Your making it sound like I can remove the drive from my PS5 install it on a friend's and it will work without any special authorization which is absurd.
Even if PS makes it so you can there will be built in software on the PS5 that will require verification to de-marry from previous console. There will also probably be a limit to how many times this can occur if it ever does.
@Sierra "A proprietary removable drive will always be married to the device it was originally installed on"
No, it won’t be. If the rumors ( https://www.playstationlife... ) are correct, they are intending on selling a PS5 with no drive what-so-ever, and then you, after the fact, can go to Walmart and buy an attachable disk drive accessory (similar to the HD-DVD player for 360).
There’s no way it can be married to the device it was ‘originally installed’ onto because it was originally installed onto nothing and needs to work with any PS5 (of that model).
"The only way around this is to desolder the chip with the encrypted data and resolder it onto the new drive.
Chips in drives are flashable. This isn’t news to anyone; it’s been that way forever. Just whatever is flashed onto it, needs to be signed with Sony’s private key. The PS5 OS then validates the FW using the public key. This is exactly how it works today on the PS5 and is no different for an internal or external drive.
“Your making it sound like I can remove the drive from my PS5 install it on a friend's and it will work without any special authorization which is absurd.”
If the leaks are to be believed, yes, you will be able to do this BUT only by buying the official external drive, you won't be able to relocate your internal drive.
That’s literally the entire point, an external bluray drive accessory which is sold separately. The special authorization is simply that it is the Sony PS5 compatible/official accessory drive, and that the firmware is signed with Sony's key.
Really, you shouldn’t talk about things like hardware, firmware and encryption if you don’t understand them in the slightest.
"A proprietary removable drive will always be married to the device it was originally installed on."
You do realize we're talking about a blu ray drive right? That thing that you put discs into? You will absolutely be able to take a blu ray drive from one PS5 and use it on another. I have an external DVD drive for my laptop that works on multiple laptops. That's the whole point of external disc drives.
Once again VGChartz proves that it's the most accurate source of numbers we have in the absence of official numbers (which we only get a few times a year at best), and yet people's takeaway is that they are trash because they weren't exactly right.
It's rare, but every few years you get an announcement of official numbers by Sony in close proximity to a statement by a specific publisher of the total number of consoles in that generation that have been sold. You can then subtract Sony's number from the total to get Xbox sales.
Also gotta love N4g that I can say basically the same thing as Orchard, and I get even votes while he gets downvoted into oblivion.
not really vgchartz number is up to 10 december 2022 does not included christmas i think it sold 28.9 mill by 10 december is still reasonable tracking because 30 million was 31 december number.
"On the hardware front we continue to produce weekly estimates, based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals."
So not even an educated guess then, grab a sample ( not a true reflection of sales ) pick any trend they fancy ( a wildly inaccurate way of predicting sales ) multiply it by 10 then divide by the number you started with, hey presto! We have a number.
Sony releasing these sales numbers just makes VGChartz out of date. Over the coming weeks they'll have to gradually fudge their 'estimations' to meet the official numbers. It's all a bit lame.
@sully, I've stated this before... go ask trunkswd as he is the one who does the calculations for that site. Things are NOT like they were during the 360/PS3 gen when it comes to how the site was run. It is WAY better now and much more accurate to within less than 10% margin of error.
Long time critics of that site have yet to realize it is run differently now. They still think it is an xb fanboy but nothing could be further from the truth. Things changed sometime last gen and have been better ever since. they make adjustments when official reports are released but they will not stop making assessments based on market predictions and sales trends. So like others have said... its all we have to go on weekly / monthly until the quarterly reports are officially released.
30 million ps5 consoles sold compared to Xbox series x/s estimated 18-20 million consoles sold. I remember Microsoft said back in the day the first console to a 10 million lead win the gen.
It was easy for them to say that when they had a price advantage and they came out a year ahead ( a year and a half in Europe) during the ps3/360 era. Greenburg stopped saying things like that once the ps4 started taking off in sales.
Yet, you got individuals that think that there isn't enough sales of PS5, or think there aren't enough VR gamers who bought PS5, to get ready for PS VR 2 launch. Not only are there PS5 VR gamers, there will be more to come as systems sell.
Again, the only console delivering "high fidelity VR" very soon. Sony just didn't talk about it. They are about to deliver it. Just like PS5.
The sales would be higher if it wasn't because of the pandemic. The gap would be larger compared to their competitor.
It also goes against your idea that Sony's starting from zero or that gamers need to buy both hardware. Many gamers bought PS5 specifically to get VR. When I get it, it will be for VR. Sony's AAA games are just icing on the cake.
More consoles sold is on topic as there will be more potential buyers of the headset. 30 million sold is many possible buyers. I still believe 1+ million first month.
And just like that you completely evaded my question - who is saying there aren't enough sales of the PS5?
"The sales would be higher if it wasn't because of the pandemic"
And if I was born as Joe Biden I'd be the president right now. We can talk about hypothetical situations all day long, doesn't change where we are today. Also, naive to assume that only PlayStation was affected by shortages - every device containing chips was, even things like cars.
"It also goes against your idea that Sony's starting from zero or that gamers need to buy both hardware"
Well, yes. You do have to buy both to use PSVR2. It's useless without a PS5. And no one said they're starting from zero.
If they manage to achieve a 4% sell-through again, with 30m PS5's they should manage 1.2m PSVR2 sales. Could get to 2m depending on how many PS5's are sold this year (and if that 4% rate sticks).
When you answer my previous questions, I'll answer yours. You've already evaded me twice. Obviously, you're not proud of your developer work. Or, it didn't sell like Sony's 30 million PS5 consoles.
Meta quest has proven there is a market. albeit at a lower price point.
This could have a double impact on psvr, it could canabalize sales, OR, it might whet-peoples-whistle so to say, and open people's minds to what's possible especially with proper hardware and a PS5 running the software.
I held off on Resident Evil Village, fully expecting it to come to PSVR2. Just bought it cheap on sale last week. Another awesome game ready for day one.
Well over a million people played RE7 on PSVR, so we could actually see RE8 chart higher again around PSVR2 launch!
As to be expected, they are usually the market leaders, congrats to Sony...I contributed to the # by 1...doing my part to keep gaming healthy.
What will be interesting in the next few years is Nintendo releasing a Switch 2...with the way the Switch sell, could a Switch 2 possibly catch and pass MS and Sony alike? Nintendo is always a wild card and keeps thing spicy.
If we're only measuring in sellthrough, this is a possibility, though Nintendo will fail in catching Sony in the tech department. They are always the company that shows that their prowess in development can't be matched. Mario Kart vs Gran Turismo, Mario vs Ratchet & Clank, etc. Nintendo may sell more, but Sony's tech will continue to motivate the industry to buy beyond the console. Top of the line TVs, sound systems, VR headset, and controllers; you just can't deny that Sony's impression on the market is legendary. The Switch is fine, but even it is missing standard features found in the PS Vita. Nintendo is nostalgic, while Sony is always pushing towards the future.
an average of 15mil/yr which is impressive considering how much it was held back by the pandemic. it's good that you can now grab a unit easier on shelves in the big markets, but not so much here still in smaller markets. where I live, they are still selling at inflated (scalper) price up to this day. The official outlets like the Sony Stores never have any to sell at MSRP and still not taking pre-orders! more than 2 years have passed and I can't believe this is still happening. damn!
Amazing stuff. The PlayStation is surely the one of the most successful electronic products ever. 25+ years of domination and innovation is incredible.
Interesting to see the contrast here... While Xbox has spent way more money adquiring studios and publishers and they even have more first party studios than Sony, and they even have a subscription model, PlayStation and Nintendo still top them on everything.
No wonder Xbox is willing to spend an history record breaking 69B transaction to buy one of the most popular games on gaming and see if they have a change.
They don't want to grow or invest on their studios. They rather Pay-to-win whatever the price.
Infesting that the minute there’s some good PlayStation news, your focus immediately turns to Xbox. But as you’ve brought them up, how many of their recent acquisitions have released an exclusive game? You have to applaud how successful PS5 has been, but those MS investments will start to pay off starting this year. The fact they’re retained competitive with a relatively limited output is an achievement in itself,
the ship is sinking on them, the violin quartet continues to play, but we all know this is ending up at the bottom of the ocean, halo infinite was their chance to establish themselves as a quality developer /or at least same level games as ps5, they blew it.
I completely agree. I find it interesting that for many instead of just congratulating Sony on their success they have to always find ways to bash MS over the head. As a multi-console gamer who enjoys my Xbox, Sony and Nintendo games, and enjoy what they each bring to the table, I just can't get with those who just want to take every chance to bash MS every chance they get but when Sony bought studios, that was fine. No patience for that.
Sony let’s their studios have creative freedom they rarely cancel games Microsoft just boasts about backwards compatibility nothing is wrong with that ability but I always admired the way Sony let’s their devs fulfill their visions for their game in development, for spider man to be around still cause of Sony shows they really know what gamers want, they still feel good about the GOD OF WAR franchise also horizon I even been seeing commercials on days gone (I hope gets a sequel or spiritual successor)
It will be over 50 million by the end of the year. Final Fantasy and Spider-Man 2 will have a lot to do with that.
To go from 25m to 30m in 3mo is pretty damn impressive. And their redesign should allow for more to be cranked out at a quicker pace.
Congratulations sony well done knew Ps5 would sold 30 million running to xmas vg chart under tracking PlayStation number again
30 million ps5 consoles sold compared to Xbox series x/s estimated 18-20 million consoles sold. I remember Microsoft said back in the day the first console to a 10 million lead win the gen.
Not at all surprising.
