Persona 5 Royal PS4 owners won’t be able to upgrade to the PS5 version

From VGC: "Atlus has confirmed that there’s no upgrade path for PS4 owners of Persona 5 Royal who want to play the upcoming PS5 version.

The enhanced version of the popular JRPG Persona 5 was released for PS4 in Japan in 2019 and worldwide in March 2020.

Persona 5 Royal will be released for PS5, Xbox Series One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC on October 21, 2022.

But in an FAQ on the game’s Japanese website, publisher Atlus said PS4 owners who want to play the enhanced version on PS5 will need to purchase it again."

It's always frustrating when companies do this. 2K and EA have this issue, they release separate console generation versions of their titles instead of one copy working on two systems.

Getting these games on the Switch anyway so it doesn't effect me yet, but once I upgrade to a PS5 my P5R copy is locked and that's disappointing.

Shadowsteal669d ago

It's not "locked" you can still play your PS4 copy via backwards compatibility.

Sgt_Slaughter669d ago

Should have worded it different, I understand that part. I meant the upgrade/next gen version part.

Atlus at it again. Why people don't call them out on their sh**ty tactics I don't understand.

I was thinking about getting this on sale but now knowing a ps5 version is coming. Ill pass

Elda669d ago

Of course they would do this because they want those coins.

"Xbox Series One, Xbox Series X/S"

Okay I like the way the Xbox Consoles are named here.

Shane Kim668d ago

Yeah, what's an Xbox Series One?

jjb1981669d ago

Probably because you can find it for about $20-$25 so they feel like they'll be missing out on possible income. Will there be a $69.99 version though?

Persona 5 Royal is my top 10 game of all time. A true masterpiece.

Barlos8d ago

Same here. Not only is it one of my favourite RPGs, it's also one of my favourite ever games. I keep coming back to it time and time again.

DustMan7d ago

Why not read one of the reviews and find out?

CrimsonWing698d ago

4.8? This game is literally one of the best modern JRPGs. I’d give it the perfect score.

Persona: How A Spin-Off Game Series Can Ruin The Original

"Newer Persona games dive into the simulation of a high school student at the cost of RPG mechanics compared to Shin Megami Tensei." - Najam from eXputer.

DrDoomer30d ago

Persona (particularly 3,4 and 5) is the best thing to come out of Atlus, by far. The only way other games get ruined is by paling in comparison.

gold_drake29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

thats a hot take if ive ever seen one.

atlus aint just persona.

they have plenty of games that are fantastic that are not persona.

maybe in sales sure but not in quality.

DrDoomer29d ago

Not saying those games are bad. I'm saying Persona is just that good.

Tapani20d ago

I enjoy the SMT core series much more vs the Persona series. I like how it is much darker and more hardcore as an RPG. I've played all of them through and they never disappoint.

Stopac30d ago

That's a bad take.

SMT had a niche following. So did persona. They redid persona starting with three to reach an wider audience. Nothing happened with the original SMT and have stayed the way they were. If they were to revamp that main series you could get what happened with soul hackers lol. You want that?

Barlos29d ago (Edited 29d ago )

A spin off is a spin off. Why would they ruin the original? If you like the original then that's great, you can carry on enjoying it. If the spin off is crap it has no impact on the original at all.

I love Persona 5 and P5R but I have zero interest in Strikers or Tactica but even if I played them and didn't like them they wouldn't ruin the original games for me.

Same goes for if you like the SMT games but don't like Persona, why would that suddenly make SMT bad?
