Ranking All FromSoftware 'Souls' Games From Worst to Best

BLG writes: "Now that the dust has settled on Elden Ring, we’ve been thinking about how it compares to FromSoftware’s other recent games. That in turn led us here, a definitive ranking of all the “Souls” games developed by the people who made the genre what it is today. These games are so important to so many people (myself included), and they deserve special attention."

I always find myself looking at lists like this, and while I often disagree with the order (I would put DS3 much higher, and DeS a little higher too), I think the most fascinating observation is this:

Almost everybody who plays these games ends up with a different opinion. I think there's so many reasons why these games are loved, and so many nuances regarding the details, that it's possible to view them in very different ways.

I wonder if I could handle a bloodborne 2 announcement or would I lose my s**t

Ramboforlife1132d ago

Oh please hell yes! I'm thinking that is going to be the next game. Can you imagine how good it'd be given how amazing ER was/is?

LemyAtom1132d ago

I hope Sony pay FromSoftware to do a Bloodborne sequel. That would be amazing.

wiegraf1132d ago

The game doesn't need a sequel imho, but a remaster for PS5 and PC

DarXyde1132d ago

Yeah, no.

The game is one generation old. Why does it need a remaster? They did the same thing with The Last of Us, which I barely excuse because PS4 doesn't play PS3. But PS4 titles are playable on PS5. Bloodborne is part of the PS Plus collection. It would be much better to just release it on PC and patch the PS4 version to take advantage of PS5. I don't understand why we need a remaster.

MadLad1130d ago

@DarX

The game's animations are locked to the 30fps cap. Going over that literally breaks the game.
They need to fully deconstruct and rebuild the game to boost the FPS as is. At that point they may as well do a solid remaster/rerelease.

It's not like the game couldn't use it. As much as I love Bloodborne, the visuals are really muddy. Not to mention there's jaggies everywhere.

wiegraf1130d ago

@TheRealTedCruz Nothing breaks and it has been done through mods. Look it up

Bloodborne is indeed the best souls, imho:
1- BB
2- ER
3- DS
4- DeS
5- DS3
6- DS2

Sekiro is not a souls game, It's Just too diferent to compare.

DarXyde1132d ago

If I exclude Sekiro as you did, for me:

DS
BB
DeS
DS3
DS2

I actually haven't played Elden Ring, so I can't judge it. That aside, there definitely needs to be a conversation about which had the best DLC. For me, that's easily DS with Artorias of the Abyss. That was legendary.

Junkrad20221132d ago (Edited 1132d ago )

what a stupid list, sekiro has the best combat because it requires you to be offensive and has deflect mechanics while the rest are just rolling hit-run hit and roll more.

lucian2291132d ago

Sekiro was fun, but it only having one weapon made it kinda meh for replaying it. people like doing their own builds and experimenting, there was none of that with Sekiro.

Why a Bloodborne Sequel Could Never Be a True 'Bloodborne 2'

If FromSoftware's Bloodborne ever gets a sequel—and that's a big if—it won't be able to simply pick up where its predecessor left off.

probably due to some.of the endings true.

but u can still continue it on and subsequently end it for good.

The_Hooligan17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I wonder if they could do a prequal where you play as part of the first hunt and see the blood research and the downfall of the healing church and the remaining hunters.

zaanan17d ago

That is a super great idea, I would 1000% pay full price for this! Only if Miyazaki directed, obviuosly. Bloodborne hooked me in a way Dark Souls never did.

Hmmm. Alex Garland’s other work is amazing so I’m definitely interested.

senorfartcushion27d ago

I've always found him pretty meh.
He's a very indecisive filmmaker.

Goodguy0128d ago (Edited 28d ago )

Why? These live action adaptations have been oh so terrible lol. I know sonic is successful but I just couldn't enjoy the first movie. You cannot adapt a full game especially a 70+hr rpg into a small 1-2hr movie without many cuts.

But I suppose their goal is to reach more people with these films I guess.

anast27d ago

It all depends on the creative talent in these projects. Last of Us and Fallout are good, but Halo is sad.

InUrFoxHole27d ago

I thought halo was pretty good

Tacoboto27d ago

I understand opinions and all but...

What in the world was pretty good about the Halo series??

FinalFantasyFanatic26d ago

The only video game adaptation that I felt went above and beyond was the Sonic movies, and they almost fumbled the first one, Mario was alright too.

-Foxtrot27d ago

I'll get downvoted to hell for this but despite Jim Carrey as Robotnik I think the films could have been better, they shouldn't have included the real world, they should have stayed on Mobius. Hell I would have rather seen animation since the Sonic Mania / Origin cutscenes were great.

I still think the Sonic the Hedgehog OVA movie is better.

PapaBop27d ago

Usually agree but give Alex Garland a chance, his other movies are amazing, this is clearly a project aiming for a high standard as opposed to just some shameless cash grab.

Tapani27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Agreed, given his track record and in-depth research he puts into each project, not to mention writers and subject matter choices he makes, I would absolutely give Alex Garland a chance. I'm intrigued, and think he has a good chance of making this work.

Pyrofire9527d ago

They'll probably not include the side quests

LikAChicken27d ago

Same! You can make an argument for each Miyazaki game but this one and Elden Ring always seemed like a god choice for live action (or animated series)

anast26d ago

That's what I'm thinking.

gold_drake27d ago

i meam, theres alot of material there sure but ... most of these enemies are .. non human.

is the movie gonna be mostly cgi? ha.
