Say that now until someone knocks on the door and offers a truck load of cash every company has a price.

Uh huh. Here's the thing, if someone like Facebook or Amazon comes around with a crazy offer your shareholders aren't going to say no. This isn't someone small like Vivendi was. If you wanted Ubisoft to remain a family business you shouldn't have gone public.

lodossrage735d ago

You know, Vivendi must feel like a bunch of fools.

They did own majority of Activision at one point, thinking that gaming wasn't worth it. Then they see Activision explode in wealth and then decide they want to return. Tried to hostile takeover Ubisoft and are now left on the outs with nothing in gaming.

As for Ubisoft, with the way they abused the Tom Clancy world, the failure of Hyperscape and other issues I can see someone grabbing them or at the very least they might have to auction off the franchises they have

"We have everything we need to remain independent"

That's unfortunate.

Still waiting for its first patch which is worrying. I know it’s been a single man developer but there’s really no excuse for no updates being released since launch. I’ve been part of many single developer releases that are updated daily, sometimes hourly. This’s hasn’t had a single one yet….

Calling Ubisoft a leader in open world gaming at any point in time would be like calling Dollar General a leader in retail.

excaliburps9h ago

Well, to be fair, they did pump out good open world games before. It was used as a template so much that people now know what it means when you say it's like an Ubi open world collectahon.

shinoff21837h ago

What though? I can't think of one game they had where I liked anything about it. Atleast since the ps3/360 Gen

Kornholic7h ago

If they have never been the leader in open world gaming, then explain me this: why does almost every open world game follow the same tired old Ubisoft open world formula?

Follow the Leader.

isarai20h ago

You were never the leader bro 🤣

shinoff218318h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I don't think they were ever the leader tbh. I've never really cared for any of their open world games. I do wanna try watch dogs 2 because it looks like it's set in San Fran. Looked interesting

I'm really curious to see what he's going to do. It seems like a GTA-style game, but I wonder how it'll differentiate itself.

Goodguy018h ago(Edited 8h ago)

A new studio making a AAA game. Yea, that'll go well. I still think new studios should only make small games for a few years to build up teamwork and trust within.

shinoff21837h ago

That's a good point but if they have the talent it may not be needed

Mr_cheese5h ago

And the industry experience like this guy clearly does

anast5h ago

If it weren't one of the founder's of one of the most prolific open-world game studios, I would agree.

EazyC2h ago

That is an interesting point. They should gun for something akin to a great PS3 game imo. The resource cost of say RDR 2 would only EVER be possible by a monolithic titan of an organisation. It would be crazy to even try and compete straight away.
