Grand Theft Auto 6 is Rockstar's Elder Scrolls 6

Bethesda and Rockstar find themselves in similar positions with The Elder Scrolls 6 and GTA 6, as there are heightened expectations to meet.

Not really since they said they are actively developing GTA6 whereas ES6 is not going into production till after Starfield is complete

FalcorMononoke1114d ago

I think Avowed will hold us over nicely until the release of ES6.

Chevalier1114d ago

I don't know if I agree that the expectations will be the same. I would think GTA would have ridiculously high expectations since it sold 160 million copies.

StarkR3ality1114d ago

I get the sentiment, I will however say that after acquired by Xbox there's a hopefulness behind Bethesda, I hope Starfield is a return to form!

Rockstar however.. don't get me wrong, the talent they have for world building is second to none. But with their money grabbing practices lately with the GTA trilogy and the GTAV "next gen" edition, I fell they have lost their way a little.

Don't get me wrong I'm sure GTA6 will come out and be incredible, but I also know it'll be riddled with even more egregious microtransactions than GTAV was. I would expect them to creep into the single player side of things also with how greedy they are getting.

eddvdm1114d ago

Agree 100%, sadly.

What was the last time we had any "offline" story DLC, GTA4 IIRC? Look at the great world RDR2 has, it would be perfect for 2 or more dlcs, but with their endless cash-grabbing RDO events - not to say uninteresting IMO, even though I've played it a lot - those never going to happen. It's sad.

Not much to hope coming from Take2, though.

isarai1114d ago

That is true, they definitely have shown some signs that they may not be the same R*, especially with Dan Houser gone, dude wrote and directed pretty much everything and left after RDR2. So at the very least it'll be interesting to see how they manage without him.

GamingSinceForever1113d ago

You new age gamers are some whiners. I have been gaming since forever and not once have I paid a single dime for in-game content. FFS just ignore it.

StarkR3ality1113d ago

So you don't mind getting ripped off then by developers releasing content specifically designed to get people to spend extra money in a game rather than make a finished product?

You're mate yeah you've convinced me, all this time I thought I was the problem, next time I come up against an RPG that level gates you to purchase XP boosts I will remember what you said just ignore it. Give the developer a free pass and spend hours grinding worthless content :)

GamingSinceForever1113d ago

Can you be specific? Give an example of something that was released as an incomplete project that required real money to get the full/better experience?

Also these companies are a business. You can’t run a business giving away free stuff. It costs them money to make the DLC so why expect it for free? They don’t want to break even they want to make a profit.

If I felt that I was getting ripped off I would have quit this hobby a long time ago.

StarkR3ality1113d ago

Assassin's Creed, Shadow of war, various other multiplayer shooters that if you paid extra money for better weapons/perks you have an unfair advantage.

You might play games that don't have those things which is fair enough, however ignorance won't prevent them creeping into games that you do care about.

GamingSinceForever1113d ago

Or you can just grind through and earn those perks for free right?

Your response did not really answer my question though. You said that they are shipping incomplete games where you are required to spend more money to get the complete experience. Your response is basically saying that people can pay cash for an unfair advantage. I'm not sure how true that really is but if it is true that would suck, however the original comments were about the developers being greedy and cheating players out of money. to that I replied that you don't have to spend a dime.

zsquaresoff1114d ago

Not even close. When Rockster releases a new game its polished and ready for release. When Bethesda releases new game, well, the less said the better.

StarkR3ality1114d ago

Do you forget the GTA trilogy?

badz1491114d ago

He did say a "new" game though. GTA Trilogy was a rerelease made by somebody else, not R* themselves.

StarkR3ality1114d ago

Fallout 76 was made by a separate team to the main Bethesda game studios but people still give them stick for it.

I get what you're saying but those games were their legacy, they would have tested them and known what state they were in and chose to release it and fix it after. It's their IP, their responsibility.

KyRo1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

@Stark and what about the abysmal state F3, Skyrim (that has a billion versions and still a mess) F4 are and are still in? People need to stop defending Bethesda whilst criticising other studios for having bad graphics, poor voice acting, terrible animations and mundane gameplay, all these being rife in Bethesda's games but get praised and awarded GOTY.

Bethesda have great studios behind them. Bethesda softworks ain't one of them.

StarkR3ality1114d ago

Awful state? The truth is is that just because Bethesda released one bad game and got bought by Xbox (we all know majority of people on here are Sony fanboys) you guys go back and hate on their older games.

Oblivion, Skyrim and Fallout 3 are regularly on peoples best ever games lists. Guys are full of shit.

GTA online was a total trainwreck, what are you talking about?

King_Noctis1114d ago (Edited 1114d ago )

You are right, GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition was an awesome, polished, and bug-free game. And like someone said, GTA online didn’t work well at all the first few month after release.

MajorLazer1114d ago

The definitive edition wasn't worked on by R* before release.

Hikoran1114d ago

Except GTA will come out and sell an incalculable amount. ES will come out and be a buggy mess. Such is the Creation Engine.

HardKnockKid241114d ago

What’s tonight’s lottery numbers?

Shinkus1114d ago

I'll take the flak for saying it, but my expectations for gta6 are in the gutter. Gta5 had a great story and then rockstar shit the bed by not releasing any single player dlc and going hard with the online which was a disaster with connection problems for months, and overloaded with mtxs. RDR was one of my favorite games and rdr2 felt so lackluster to me, that I feel like rockstar has lost their edge.

They are going to raise the price on this game.

Profchaos3d ago

Who cares I mean honestly honestly the amount of hours you can sink into this game alone would be worth the price of two games

ZycoFox3d ago

Provided they have plenty of missions to the story and lots of interactivity/side stuff, or add more afterwards.. Not much good if the game is very short or a big desert, or both.

-Foxtrot3d ago

Who cares? All of us who don't want other developers to get the same idea which they will

Nintendo already opened the flood games with their pricing now you want it to get worse? You are letting developers have the excuse.

Complete boot licking...we didn't ask Rockstar to make these games super ambitious and spend millions on it.

Also you know most of that money is just going to be raked back in thanks to the Online so why do they need to raise the price?

Profchaos3d ago

@foxtrot I totally understand the perspective of other games don't deserve this and I entirely agree. If Nintendo didn't do it Xbox would have done it twice weeks later their decision wasn't a knee jerk reaction it was hinted at and planned well before the floodgates open they had been giving away their first party titles for a long time now to gamepass subs and failing to recoup development expenses it was inevitable that the price was going up.

If GTA Vi wasn't as ambitious as it is people would riot we say we didn't ask for this but we kind of did the expectation of perfection was set many years ago and the longer the development the more we expect.

Think of half life 3 if that ever actually comes out it has to be god tier it can't be a standard shooter it has to excell same with GTA.

CrimsonWing694d ago

Can’t wait! Like my hype has never been this high for a game. I hope it really delivers and looks like what they’re showing. Like, I’ll finally feel like we’ve entered next-gen if it does.

lucasnooker4d ago

Only game this generation I’m truly hyped for. A true AAA big budget banger pushing the hardware to the limits like the good old days!

Eonjay3d ago

While is certainly good to.see the push the machines keep in mind the average studio doesn't have the money or resources to invest into development for over a decade. It really isn't feasible for every game or even 10% of them to reach the levels of this game.

lucasnooker3d ago

@Eonjay and that’s why gaming is cooked today!

Eonjay3d ago

I get it but having spent the weekend playing Balatro, I am actually very satisfied with games of different sizes and prices. I think all big companies should have games of all ranges. And technically they already do.

Basically there really isn't a good reason for most games to push hardware to the max.

lucasnooker1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

@Eonjay There was a time we used to expect each generation to be better than the last. Smh. You think people were sharing your same sentiment when we first went from ps1 to ps2? Or ps2 to ps3? Now people actually defend the state of gaming as it is and accept mediocrity. It’s sad to see. Especially if you were there at the time. The buzz for gaming was something different!

Levii_924d ago

I can't wait for this overblown cutscene game to come out so i never buy it and spend money on it.

pwnmaster30004d ago

Thanks for sharing.
I guess I’ll do the opposite

Yui_Suzumiya4d ago

Hell yes! Someone speaking my language for once.

GotGame8183d ago

Hell yes! Like I said, someone has multiple accounts!

b00mFargl34d ago

That's a really cool story; I'm sure your mom loves it when you tell her those stories when you come out of the basement.

GotGame8183d ago

Someone has multiple accounts!

Yui_Suzumiya3d ago

You know there is more than 1 person in the world who thinks GTA is boring right? Lol

andy853d ago

Cutscene game? I probably had 100 hours gameplay in one playthrough of V. Not bad for a cutscene game

GhostScholar4d ago

Technically it looks incredible but I’m a bit disappointed that it’s turned into a franchise about heists. I miss the more carried mission structure. I miss having just one playable character too.

Putte4d ago

Exactly. It's a shame we don't have one playable character. And the boring heist all the time. Miss the more grounded story's about people.

Extermin8or3_4d ago

You realise you can have both on the story right?

LarVanian3d ago

Heists, be it bank heists or smaller scale, have always been present in GTA since GTA3 at least. That game literally kicked off the 3D universe with a bank heist (it was a cutscene albeit).
We still have no idea how the full story of GTAVI will pan out but it should really be expected that there will be the odd heist on top of other aspects of criminality.

GhostScholar3d ago

Yes but starting with gta v that was the thrust of the whole game. I just miss the mission variety of the games prior to V.

-Foxtrot3d ago

"I miss having just one playable character too"

I have to agree, I felt like I couldn't really invest enough time in anyone during GTAV because we kept switching and out of all of them Trevor was the only fresh of breath air since Michael just reminded me of Tommy and Franklin reminded me of CJ. Also only allowing you to buy certain properties with certain characters was annoying.

I'm hoping with the two characters being romantically linked it means they share all their properties and investments in the game.

PhillyDonJawn4d ago

They're definitely gonna charge 2x. Full cost for the story. $80 Full cost for the MP. $80 complete $160 Bundle with some in game currency and Cosmetic dlc. $200

Ninver3d ago

And I'll give them a nice middle finger and buy 2 other games.

fsfsxii3d ago

I’ll buy two copied just to piss you people off.

PhillyDonJawn3d ago

Why would I be pissed? Its gta id buy that sht @$300 lol. I just acknowledged the bs prices the game industry is pulling

Ninver3d ago

But why would anyone be pissed if you're dumb enough to fork over that amount of cash. It's your money lol.

Why The Rumored $1 Billion Budget For Grand Theft Auto VI Does Not Add Up

Here's why the rumored $1 billion budget for Rockstar Games' upcoming open world action game, Grand Theft Auto VI, doesn't quite add up.

thorstein5d ago

"Or was it i̶n̶f̶o̶r̶m̶e̶d̶ guesswork from analysts?"

Video game budgets will always be fictional, just like Hollywood movies. Unless there are receipts it's all speculation.

And Take Two has a marketing department with an already approved budget (just like studios in Hollywood).

thorstein5d ago

(Continue...I was in the Lincoln Tunnel)
Budgeting isn't included in the total cost because it is a separate budget. These companies intentionally inflate the numbers so they pay less in taxes.

This is not a new trend. And if you give your CEO $30 million per year and a game takes 5 years, you just add that $150million to the budget (CNN).

VenomUK4d ago

The costs don’t seem out of the realms of possibility. Remember that Rockstar isn’t just releasing just the GTA VI single player game, it has been building an online platform that will far surpass that of GTA V in size and scope that could last for 15 years or more - that takes significant investment.

rudero4d ago

Absolutely anything to do with the product is in the budget.
That is the very definition of BUDGET.

The majority of the budget is marketing and not producing the game.

Then said companies can tag anything else they want in said “budget”.

And the one thing that gta games have is commercials galore.

Early hands on… in the budget.
Review copies.. in the budget.

senorfartcushion4d ago

How much you have as a budget is different from how much you spend making a product. This is one thing journalists never seem to get

isarai5d ago

I don't know where they get these numbers, absolutely NO games is spending anywhere near that amount on production even including marketing. If we're talking lifetime estimates for like a 10yr plan maybe, but even that would be a very vague projection. RDR2 at the time of release cost less that GTAV did and GTAV cost about 265mil with marketing being an average of about 200-300mil each.

Lightning775d ago

I believe it's somewhere around there. Cod is 700m$ to make. I think GTA could be around there if not more. The insane level of detail in the trailer says it all.

Yeah I believe it's around there personally.

goken5d ago

The $700m cod budget is for tax purposes imho.
I also seriously doubt a game even as top notch as GTA would cost a billion to make.

QuantumMechanic5d ago

Yeah, that would be tax fraud. Public companies are independenly audited. They cannot just put whatever number they want "for tax purposes".

thorstein4d ago

@quantum

It's literally called Hollywood Accounting when movie studios do it.

So, you believe that goken and I are wrong, and Return of the Jedi never turned a profit.

It happens all the time.

anast4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Hate to break it to you Quantum, but multi-billion dollar companies don't have to follow the rules.

QuantumMechanic4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

There's a difference between choosing how to allocate corporate/merchandising/royalt y expenses ("Hollywood accounting") and fraudulently inflating project expenses (ILLEGAL). Even if the IRS didn't catch wind of this accounting immediately, the SEC requires quarterly third-party financial audits of public companies. Corporate executives get sued and go to jail for misrepresenting company performance because it affects the value of publically-traded shares.

thorstein4d ago

@Quantim

"It's called the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it."

You're doubling down and we are just trying to get you to understand.

Of course it's legal, their politicians made it so.

QuantumMechanic4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

There's nothing I "need to understand". I have no problem with "Hollywood accounting" (which is legal because all expenses are taken into account in some capacity on the balance sheet). I was arguing against coming up with some large number "for tax purposes" which cannot come from nothing; it must be documented with receipts/invoices. If a company claims total cost of a production is $700M because they included fixed operating costs, no problem there! If they claim this cost without spending this cost on some component of their operations or the project, that is fraud and they will not pass their SEC audit (if they are a public company). Period.

https://www.sec.gov/about/r...

thorstein2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

"There's nothing I need to understand. I don't have any problem with Hollywood Accounting (which is legal..."

Have a good day, guy.

SimpleSlave4d ago

To be fair, the $700 million in development costs were over the game’s lifecycle, not just development - Black Ops Cold War (2020) in this case. And of course, this also include their marketing campaign.

But then, you take into account Activision Blizzard's shenanigans for not paying taxes, even getting tax refunds, moving billions to tax havens, plus all the money paid by Microsawft and Sony for exclusive deals, and I bet you that figure is substantially way lower than $700 millions. And I do mean SUBSTANTIALLY lower than that.

Oh, and if you think Rockstar hasn't figure out that scheme by now, lol, they have. They all have.

Milk...get your milk...and so much more. Really when you release the same games in three editions over 15 years it's amazing how much money, and the amount of sales you earn. It's amazing how no one can compete.

Mr_cheese5d ago

To be fair, no many companies could release the same game over and over. They've earned that whether we agree or not

DarXyde5d ago

I mean Resident Evil 4 has had longer legs and still hasn't done anything like this.

GTA v isn't the only game that's released three consoles generations running but nothing has sold those numbers including GTA San Andreas which is now 4 console generations deep.

absolutely insane

No surprising considering that it’s been on every major platform and store.

I decided to look up the longest and most sold games list. To my surprise Tetris has takes the top spot.
