I do not understand these perfect scores. It’s not a bad game, but it’s certainly not a 10 and there other games out there that look better visually too. If anything the visuals and performance of FW are a mixed bag. There’s tons of pop in, the shadows are rough and shimmery/jittery. The atmospheric fog looks like a super low rez pattern that’s just blurred over the top.

There’s been more than one occasion where my character gets stuck and repeats an animation loop over and over really fast (I recorded it the first time cuz it looked like a river dance performance and l laughed really hard). There was another time I was standing on what I thought was a silver box on the ground and I didn’t know what it was. When I moved on, the rest popped in and turns out it was water that just never bothered to draw in. I’m playing on ps5 mind you so this type of stuff is surprising and not nearly as obvious on other ps5 games.

Gameplay wise it’s nothing new. It didn’t improve on anything from the original. Literally just the same for better or worse. The writing feels like generic Hollywood movie dialog and the plot points feel like trendy, hackneyed buzzword themed save the earth tropes (I do care about the environment but this feels like a cash in).

I’m not saying it’s a bad game. It’s fine. I’m saying it’s not a perfect game. Personally I’d give it a 7.5 to an 8.

“ Gameplay wise it’s nothing new. It didn’t improve on anything from the original.”

He spent more time writing this waste of space comment than he did playing the game. Nothing to read here move along folks

There is not a better looking more prettier open world game maybe even linear game than HZ FW. Anyone trying to downplay its graphical presentation is deluding themselves.

Elda1173d ago (Edited 1173d ago )

You're entitled to your opinion. I think HFW is worthy of its high scores. Personally..so far I give it a 9 out of 10. I just started 7 hrs of Elden Ring which so far I give it an 8 & basically I can say the same thing because the game looks & plays just like the Souls games with some additions of being open world & a name change. Far as ER getting 10s I just don't see it because it doesn't do anything mind-blowing different,it's the same engine, the same mechanics, the same style of gameplay. Everybody has their opinion.

As Hades said; "you are deluded."

Aloymetal1173d ago

''Personally I’d give it a 7.5 to an 8.''
Good to know this is your PERSONAL opinion.

RedDevils1173d ago

I haven't play or bought it yet, but from the look of it, is look like 8/10 games. Just like the first game. The 10/10 score in these feel like an 8/10 back in the early 2000s

Armaggedon1173d ago

The issues present in the game are a reflection of the observer. Besides, we cant take an out of 10 scale too seriously, as we are forcing nigh infinite possibility into a scale of only 10. Even perfection can become more perfect.

mike32UK1172d ago

Literally my only nitpicks with the game ar the reflections of the water surfaces from the underside and the gameplay doesn't lend well to indoor/tight spaces

That's it. Graphically it's absolutely astonishing, the backdrops are mind bogglingly detailed

10/10 used to mean as close to perfect as possible. Now I feel it's used a bit too often. Up until the early 2000s there were only a handful of these 10/10 games. Admittedly there were probably fewer reviewers out there, and the internet wasn't as accessible as a means of finding out these reviews (anyone else miss PlayStation Max Magazine!?) but I think the hype modern games get clearly sway some reviewers opinions.

northpaws1173d ago

Visual, gameplay, story, presentation, it has everything. Definitely a 10 for me.

Lighter91173d ago

I tried doing one quest yesterday, just one and I couldn't do it because I kept getting sidetracked into other interesting things. Those side missions end up being amazing.

Knushwood Butt1173d ago

Yeah, I'm 40 hours in and just doing what I feel like doing, and the quality and variety is great.
Keep getting my ass handed to me on that board game but I haven't really spent much time with it.
Maybe the pits could be more challenging but still a great way to understand another layer to the combat.

I'd say the first few hours reminded me of the first game in terms of tone, politics, trade and stuff, but once you get into the west it changes significantly, and for the better.

YodaCracker1173d ago

I’m getting déjà vu back to 2017. The first Horizon came out and then a week later Breath of the Wild came out and stole all the attention. Same thing is happening now with Forbidden West and Elden Ring.

Nyxus1173d ago

Horizon has managed to sell 20 million copies, so it probably did alright.

RickRoland1173d ago

Elden Ring is not stealing Horizon’s thunder. Entirely different games for very different gamers. The only thing they share is being open world.

Aloymetal1173d ago

Well in terms of sales, best fromsoft game is DS3 with 10 mil in 3 platforms as of the end of 2021.
1st Horizon managed to do that in less than 2 years on one platform so nah, Fromsoft games are excellent but still niche.
I'm pretty sure HFW will surpass its predecessor and Elden Ring as well. I'm enjoying both.

I Watched the Leaked Horizon AI Tech Demo Through My Fingers

Maybe I'm turning into "old man yells at cloud."

So lame, a tech demo was conducted to test new technology. This is nothing new; they've been doing this since the 1980s. There have been thousands of tech demos that led to nothing. That said, AI is here to stay, and it will eventually find its way into games in one form or another. It's time to stop the overly dramatic reactions and accept reality.

Christopher50d ago

Talk about a 180 midway through your argument. Perhaps that 180 is why people are talking about it?

darthv7250d ago

What he said was not wrong though... AI is here and being used more and more is different industries. Its not like it is going away anytime soon.

Christopher49d ago

@darth: Where did I say he was wrong other than expressing that it's this thinking that people are talking about it? He complained about people talking about a tech demo being shown to the public as an expression of AI's use being popularized and then proved it with his own words. I didn't say they were wrong, only it only gives credence to those who are worried about the popularization and use of AI in the industry to replace actual actors.

Rancegamerx49d ago

I can see what you mean. What I am getting at is just because they did a tech demo with Aloy using AI to voice doesn't meam that this particular tech will ever actually be used. Although I personally think it will, if we can get voices to sound more natural and real. Unless it's stopped by voice actors.

darthv7249d ago

that is the current situation. voice actors are 'voicing' their concern over the use of AI. im sure you have heard those TV commercials where you can tell its an AI voice. But as things improve... there will be a point where nobody will be able to tell the difference.

Mr_cheese50d ago

Thegamer are quickly highlighting themselves as a website full of over the top BS

gold_drake50d ago

there is this website from a bunch of devs who developed a more enhanced AI conversational voice thing, where u can talk to them.

i did for 10 minutes and it freaked me out how real it sounded. it did glitch a few times but damn. the, in real time, chatter and response was amazing and frightening at the same time ha

Kyizen49d ago

One of the original Toy Story developers summed it up nicely. Basically when they were doing Toy Story people were shocked you are going from hand drawn art to computers but now no one blinks an eye and most if not all anime is 'drawn' on computers. But he also stated this didn't replace artist but just gave them a new tool to use. Now with AI the author is saying it will replace writing but it won't, using it to have dynamic conversations with NPCs or chatter as the character explores the world will avoid that repetitive banter. You will still need writers to craft a good story and make a compelling character(s).

Horizon Forbidden West Struck the Perfect Balance of Tribes for Horizon 3

Horizon Forbidden West may have struck the right balance after adding several new tribes to the series, something which Horizon 3 should try to keep.

No horizon 3 i beg you Sony .. enough of this series already

pwnmaster300070d ago

It literally only had 2 main games and 2 dlc.
Sure it had some spin off but others have more
Halo
Gears
Elder scroll
Uncharted
God of war
Gta
Etc.
Game isnt done yet and just because your tired of it doesn’t mean everyone is.

ravens5270d ago

Exactly. (*All following #s are slightly exaggerated*) There's like 36 CODs. 16 Assassin's Creed. 25 Final Fantasies. 80 Maddens. I hate when we're on the 3rd iteration of a game and people say this.

isarai69d ago

We've had 2 main games, 2dlcs, a vr spinoff, a lego spinoff and soon to be GAAS spinoff

lukasmain70d ago

Why not? It's popular. They're great critically acclaimed games. It need a 3rd game.

northpaws70d ago

@Cacabunga

Only speak for yourself, I want to know how the story ends.

raWfodog69d ago

Same here. I'm enjoying the story. I want to see what happens when Nemesis arrives.

JEECE70d ago

It all depends on if it's actually a massive step forward or if it just feels like an iterative sequel. There's a lot of revisionist history now about how "mid" Horizon has always been, but people weren't saying that when Zero Dawn came out-people were pretty much universally into it. The major hit against it at the time was that it came out too close to Breath of the Wild.

The problem with Forbidden West is that it took five years and it was just an iterative sequel. Iterative sequels can be fine, or even great, but when five years pass and a new generation of consoles comes out, people expect a big jump, and they didn't get it. Stuff that worked in 2017 felt tired by 2022.

3 can't just be Forbidden West with slightly better graphics. It needs to actually be a meaningful leap.

ravens5270d ago

Im looking forward to the 3rd game. I'd like that to be the last one though. New IP after would be ideal.

jznrpg70d ago

Took me a little while to get into Forbidden West because I was playing on hard but it was really damn good once I got into a groove.

I want to see the ending of this trilogy so hopefully it’s not too far out. Hopefully whoever plays Sylens can do the character justice.

isarai69d ago

I dunno, i LOOOOVED Zero Dawn, but i wanted Forbidden West to be over by like the halfway point. It's an absolutely gorgeous game but damn was it buggy for a while after release, and the enemies and combat felt so janky and unbalanced compared to the first.
