Consumers place Blu-ray players at the top of their holiday wish lists.

US, December 12, 2008 - The holiday shopping season is at full intensity and consumers have made it clear that above all else they want a Blu-ray player in their stocking. Numerous reports have shown a dramatic increase in Blu-ray sales this year, with experts estimating that many more thousands of units will be cleared from the shelves before the New Year.

The Trojan Horse has succeeded and walls of Troy are aflame. DVD will be totally defeated in 12-16 months. Just like VHS, DVD players will continue to be available on Target and Walmart shelves for another 10 years at $20-$30 and there'll be large cardboard bins filled with old movies in the $3-$5 range.

Lookout for the Sanyo $199 portable blu-ray player with a 7" lcd (OLED models will cost a lot more!) next christmas.

Downloadable movies, supposedly the big threat to Blu-Ray still look like crap (unless you have uber broadband) and have virtually no market penetration. People like their discs which they can hold in their hand, put in their shelves, take camping, take on road-trips, etc...

As long as bluray is doing fine, Sony will do fine. I have never seen so many people hate on the PS3 so much in so little time. What is the deal? Are they threatened by it, or are the jealous that they don't have it themselves? That CNN article saying "mediocre game line up", I raged. That couldn't be a more fanboy claim. It has every game the 360 has minus a few like Gears of War 2, and them some like MGS4(I honestly can do without GeoW2 considering it took the credit of a ps2 game Kill.switch, not just that either, it isn't innovative and new either, its the same old stuff, MGS4 on the other hand, has so many unlockables, and also what other game can you play 3rd person, over the shoulder AND first person??) Who will "win" this generation? I don't know, if going by sales its the Wii, but I know what console is going to outlive this generation and into the next.

the truth: well based on statistics people still want a physical media like bluray because of the following reasons:
1 people want to show off what they own, if it's DD they might
mistake it as a pirated copy and you have to turn on your tv or pc just to to see your collection.
2 resale! you can sell or pawn your bluray copy but DD's you can't.
3 NA broadband is still slow. sometimes it could take you half a day just downloading your movies
4 collector's edition copy. well you can't have this one on DD's.
5 your DD copy might get deleted or have viruses. you know how internet is, it's not the safest place in the world.

I really hope blue ray becomes the number one format. The picture and sound not to mention the space is great. It some ways its a shame the 360 wasn't blue ray as a lot of games being muti format don't make much use of it. Hopefully next gen it will be the standard drive and also by then it will be a lot cheaper.

Actually my father in-law just picked up a Samsung BD player and I'm almost tempted to say the picture is nicer than that of the PS3 but then again he has it hooked up to a 46" Samsung 750 series TV :)

There are standalones that do certain things better than the PS3, but as an overall package for the money, the PS3 is unbeatable.

It really is a great gaming system AND entertainment center all in one great package.

Im not even doubting Sony has not been a part of Blu's Success...

its just a lot of die hard fans will not buy (for example) a Samsung BR player, Not because its picture quality surpasses EVERYTHING available TODAY (DVD,DD), but because those die hards attach SONY's name to it.

Maybe if it was Toshiba/Ms it'd be a different story. However, for the HD-DVD/DD adopters, its a matter of Pride and ignorance.

And thats where they get it wrong. BR works, its here, and DD will be the future ...... a distant future.

BTW, I love my BR on my 50" FULL-HD Panny 850 Plasma in 5.1. :-)

The good news for Bluray is the availability of cheaper players. This is hard for the young gamers in this forum to understand, but most people reject the idea of using a game console to play a movie. Most people (probably 99% of women) want a familiar "appliance" player just like their old DVD player - not some console with a joystick.

There's no doubt that a lot of people are buying $200 Blu Ray players this year instead of a $400 PS3. This definitely explains the PS3 sales numbers vs last year when the PS3 was the cheapest Blu Ray and the only one that was upgradable to Blu Ray 2.0.

There is not much story here. BR is the next gen. Content creators like Sony, Warner, Disney etc will make their content more and more available on BR... and then exclusive content... some movies will be only on BR...

And so the viewing public will be moved to BR... regardless of MS protesting that DDL is the future or whatever. BR will be here for ten years at least. And it will rule. HD-DVD died. BR will be 200 to 450 GB sizes.

Trying to play it down in a gaming forum is just simply because the MS fans hate to see their competition succeed at anything - even in a market where they are not a player. That kind of destructive mindset is why I will not get anything MS as far as possible.

i just bought sealed Dark Knight Bluray (2 discs) for £13.95 .... off ebay.

After browsing today, in HMV current cost of Dark knight:

DVD (2 disc) £11.99
Bluray (2 discs) £14.99

So almost close but getting cheap brand new.

Yep, Bluray sales are way up from last year, but last years figures for Bluray sales were horrid. Bluray sales are still a small amount compared to DVD's.

Bluray is here to stay, but it ain't in any position to overtake DVD's anytime soon. Only when the movies and players come down in price to affordable levels, will bluray really start to take off. Until then, it still is chump change compared to DVD's.

If anybody honestly believes that blu ray is not going to replace DVD anytime soon then they know nothing about statistics. The Dark Knight on Blu Ray can easily be compared to The Matrix on DVD where as 25-30% of the overall discs sold were on Blu Ray on the first day. That is incredible no matter how you want to spin it. I understand though, that Netflix streaming is probably pretty popular too.

Most Blue Ray films are new releases (including films which have been re-released for BR).
So if a film is on DVD and sitting in the bargain bin, then of course its going to be cheaper than a new release BR.
Fact is a new release film will have similar prices on BR and DVD, but the averages when including cheap DVDs will make it look cheaper.
It won't be till BR starts selling in bargain bins that you will see a view that its at the same price as often people (I used to be one of them) will wait till films end up in the bargain bin before buying.

Dark Knight was projected to sell 800,000 copies on Blu-ray in it's first week because Iron Man's box office receipts were 60 percent of Dark Knight's box office receipts. Problem for Blu-ray supporters is that DVD sales of Dark Knight are expected to be 11.5 million which AGAIN leaves Blu-ray with a 6.9 percent market share.

I guess you didn't use common sense when posting your link. You used a link to project Dark Knight blu ray sales from OCTOBER 9th. It was already stated that TDK surpassed expectations in day 1 sales, and if you want to use actual logic, Iron Man sold 250,000 day one then 500,000 for it's first week, so TDK could go from 600,000 first day to 1.2 mil first week still equaling a 25% market share. Of course the article you posted said that TDK was going to sell 800,000 the first week, because they were assuming that it would have the EXACT same market size/potential as Iron Man which simply did not happen. Maybe you should try reading some current articles about how blu ray sales more than tripled over Black Friday and how TDK sales on blu ray FAR surpassed projections, instead of posting a link to an article that came out exactly 2 month BEFORE TDK and using that for your projections. lol.

my dad just bought 40" sony bravia plasma tv along with sony bluray player and 2 HDMI leads. they are coming on Monday.

Also he upgraded to Sky HD. Shame though, he has to wait till end of January. No surprise thou considering this time of the year.

So that 2 PS3, 1 BR player, 3 Sony tvs in our household.

1.) Sony is a very big corporation. And the PS3 is not the only thing that Sony makes.
2.) Blue-Ray is not going to fail because of how well it is doing.

3.) Sony is a smart company. And because the stupid people in America don't know anything other than what they want to believe, they think it is all Sony's fault that the world is a recession, when in fact it is mostly AMERICANS FAULT. AND YES I AM AMERICAN SO I AM BLAMING MY SELF.

It is very stupid to want a Company to fail. because on day its going to bite you in the butt.

And as far as those big company in America that went bankrupt, well... it was their fault and they were stupid.

One more thing I would like to add is:

That's good and glad it is, I finally buckled down and got my folks a few blu-rays and are lending them my PS3 for a year [Going to live on campus so allowing them the chance to use it after this semester] Though kind of pricey [my wallet is still showing the after-effects T_T]

Oh well though that's the price that must be paid for great quality :). [Got the Dark Knight on BR as well as Indiana Jones (Parents love them and dad never got to see it in theaters so bought him the BR edition) Plan to get them Pirates on BR the the disc bundle, found out it was like 70.00 bucks so told them to just wait until about new years for that one T_T]

I was planing on getting a stand alone Blu-Ray player at the start of next year, -I am trying to hold off for a multi disc changer- if the sales keep this up ward trend then the prices are sure to go down. Just a FYI there are 7 Blu-Ray movies sitting under my Christmas Tree this year that I know of.

when dvd came out it had bad sales.
and the movie industry decides if blu-ray is going to be the next thing.
as time goes on they will make movie only on blu-ray and not dvd and then slowly you see dvd die off. like VCR did it died.

yup mgs4 is still in the wrapper but i got like 20 blue rays now check out the predators, iron man for sure i also got some of the olders movies like stargate and poltergeist but i noticed that some of the older movies dont have the pure blue ray feel that the newer movies have but thats just expected...

of course the reason why blue ray is selling so well is because of the severe price drops they made from 400 to 199 or even 179 so you see make a price drop and people will buy more sony wants ps3 to get out of last place they need a price drop but i dont see that happening this holiday season or anytime next year since ive been hearing about a price drop for about a year now and still havent seen one ... plus would it hurt to add a hdmi cable with the ps3 ?
