PS5 Exploit: Fail0verflow show decrypted PS5 firmware files and PS5 keys

What a day for the PS5 scene! After TheFloW shared what appears to be a PS5 Kernel Exploit on the latest PS5 firmware, the Fail0verflow hacking group came back from the dead with a screenshot of what appears to be a fully decrypted file, part of a PS5 Firmware update.

XiNatsuDragnel913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

This is interesting to know

plmkoh913d ago

Lol TheFloW that's brought back a lot of memories of the good old days with Geohot et al.

Eamon913d ago

Aha, the Sony v Geohot court battle which basically ended up with him working at FB and then Google. And soon after that the failoverflow lecture which was made Geohot's jailbreak look amateur.

plmkoh912d ago

Good times and many train wrecks. Those were the days N4G had great comments and the excellent bubble system.

Mr_cheese912d ago

I miss the bubble system

Pirated games are bad for honest gamers and the industry at large.

Sieg913d ago

what's worse. Piracy or anti-consumer practices?

Magog913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

What anti-consumer practice do you speak of? Please don't say raising game prices because calculated for inflation $70 is cheaper than $60 was when $60 games became the standard.

Silly gameAr913d ago

Don't give me that shit. If that was the case, nintendo would be the first one to get sniped. They're doing this of spite, like they did last time.

Darkborn913d ago

Buying a third party publisher, forcing a microphone and camera as well as always online DRM and no game trading. Those were all anti consumer. Whos idea was that? Not playstation. Maybe the $10 price increase was to continue paying their employees through the inflation were in because of bad political policies and the increase in quality game creation. Idk maybe that's good consumer practices.

Christopher913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

Piracy creates anti-consumer practices. It's not the only source of it, but it's one of the main drivers.

Edit: As to the question of "what anti-consumer practices?"

- DRM
- Digital-focused games and content
- MTX/Season Passes
- Annual releases without much change as the cost to innovate is affected by piracy (see tons of Indie games as an example of this)

babadivad913d ago

Why should you have to choose between evil and evil?

Eamon913d ago

To be honest, this is a redundant debate that's been waging for decades with 0 effect on the reality. Games are selling better than ever before, and yet there still is piracy.

What's been proven is overwhelming majority of people would rather buy games at affordable prices than go through the trouble of pirating. Just look at the continued success of Steam, GOG and the consoles over several generations. Generally MS and Sony try to keep prices reasonable but 3rd party publishers like Activision always plot to artificially trying to inflate game prices.

-Hermit-913d ago

@Magog

"Please don't say raising game prices because calculated for inflation $70 is cheaper than $60 was when $60 games became the standard."

What a pathetic excuse. This same company makes millions daily from their own store, and unlike other companies, they bank 100% of the profits from their own games whilst every other company that sells their games on the Playstation store are losing 30% of the profit to Sony.

They are one of the companies that never need to raise the prices of their games, they are making almost double the amount of money any other company is making per sale.

Anybody that defends this is a mug.

dbcoops913d ago

Neither is worse than the other per say, they are both bad.

anubusgold912d ago

@Magog Gamer companies are making more money off games that ever, With their dlc, live services, and microtransaction and season pass crap.

hesido912d ago

I'm more concerned about online cheating. I hope this does not affect multiplayer games.

Rude-ro912d ago

Depends who you are asking..
The lowest percentage of pirated software in the existence of pc in a single year has been 45% ..just think how astronomical that number is in real world currency?
Why do you think cloud computing, subscriptions etc are the goal?

Piracy creates anti-consumer practices. It's not the only source of it, but it's one of the main drivers.

Edit: As to the question of "what anti-consumer practices?"

- DRM
- Digital-focused games and content
- MTX/Season Passes
- Annual releases without much change as the cost to innovate is affected by piracy (see tons of Indie games as an example of this)"

-DRM is a direct result of Piracy. That doesn't really count as anticonsumer when it's the consumers pirating that caused this move.
-Digital focused content... really? I'm a fan of physical media. I always buy games I love Physical if it exists. But this is more so a preference over everything. It's just going to the digital age. More and more are buying digital as much as I hate to say and most of my friends barely go in stores anymore for titles. That's not anticonsumer tbh.
-MTX/Season Passes. I'd have gave you this if you said MTX, though it's not necessarily bad. Just the popular ways of implementing it. BUT why I won't agree is season passes. Sure some games have BS and garbage cash grab season passes. But Season passes for alot of games are ultimately great. Especially when the content is actually made later for it. Like Getting Ni No Kuni 2's gets you a good amount of extra to do. As well as the free DLC they give you. Spiderman has a good one. While people cry about it, I think Fighting games have good ones. They benefit the most from them. That stops them from needed to release multiple versions of games and such. There's benefits to season passes when they're implemented right and generally I'm not dumb and can see where they're good. A Hat in Time was fantastic DLC as well
-Last one, tbh I don't even know what you're talking about. This I'd have agreed with as I hate that sports games give things that are free updates as entire new games every year etc. But once you mentioned indies, I became lost

I hate anti consumer practices. But not everything is a anticonsumer practice lol

I agree but I saw a great post the other day which I'll butcher now.. but give the player a reason not to pirate the game - people want to give you money for something but they just want to know what they're in for.

Teflon02912d ago

This is cap. People who pirate generally just don't want to pay period. I have a friend who buys games and pirates games. He pirates any game he just doesn't want to buy. Like he'll buy a playstation exclusive, or a PC game for a series he loves. But he'll pirate the game instead if he sees a easy opportunity to. Which is where all the DRM and such come in. If gamers where that honest, half the things in place that are anticonsumer to people wouldn't exist

MadLad913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

Eh.
I mean, maybe for indie, or smaller AA projects. Almost every AAA experience tries to force you into microtransactions on top of their $60-70 premium. All the while spending as much money marketing the game as actually went into development, while often offering unfinished or lackluster experiences.

You almost have to try before you buy just to know if a game actually lives up to the marketing nowadays.
Even then, we have companies throwing in a whole bunch of anti-consumer practices pre-launch after they already have your money and attention.

I'm not for pirating any modern game, but I don't shed a tear for these multinationals wheb it happens, as theyslowly ruin the industry.

Awesome news, hopefully there might be some some kind of custom firmware in the future.

annoyedgamer913d ago

This is bad for Sony, there this is bad and wrong and should he condemned.

-Hermit-913d ago

Oh no, how will the multi billion dollar company cope? /s

99% of people that play on Playstation won't even touch custom firmware. It will hurt them as much as the Nintendo Switch emulation hurts Nintendo.

Orchard913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

They are worth 155bn dollars - they can afford to and should hire (more/better) security engineers.

Orchard913d ago (Edited 913d ago )

@jonny897 Resorting to insults is the sign of someone who doesn't know what they're talking about.

1. My beloved Microsoft? Where did I mention Microsoft? I play on PS5 and have no XSX. The only Microsoft 'platform' I actively game on is PC.
2. Where did I say bug bounty programs are a bad thing? They are not, and are standard nowadays.

The difference is XSX (and AFAIK XB1) were not hacked, where as Switch, PS4 and now PS5 have been - and seemingly within the first year for the latter.

So while nothing is impenetrable, the amount you invest in security can obviously help.

The good thing is, beyond piracy, this probably won't have any impact on us legit gamers because I'd expect Sony to be able to detect & ban anyone with a custom firmware from PSN so we shouldn't encounter cheaters etc.

I hope not. I don't need hackers in my online games.

I was hoping for something different from Coalition, not Gears 6 so soon.
Their expertise in UE development could've propelled them to try out other IPs using the new UE5.
But guess, given recent MS' state, Gears 6 was the 'safer' call for the studio. But still hope they venture other IPs or even other genres ... at least FPSs in future?

Alexious3h ago

Microsoft seems only interested in maximizing profits through its biggest IPs at this point.

Fishy Fingers1h ago

So soon? Its been 5 years since Gears 5, longest gap between games in the franchise.

XiNatsuDragnel6h ago

I was hoping for better but Microsoft being safe again....

MrDead1h ago

Why would people be less angry? If MS made it's own games instead of buying up what was already available then we wouldn't be in the situation that everyone is angry at.

MS is the problem.

miyoka1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Just forget what happened and keep supporting Microsoft!

PRIMORDUS1h ago

Fuck MS and Phil. I already told that shit bag off on Twitter, if the dumb ass responds I highly doubt it, I will go off much worse. What a fucking disgrace MS and Phil are to the gaming community.
