Guardians of the Galaxy File Size Is Only 31GB on PS5, but 60GB on PS4

Gamers will be glad to know that the Guardians of the Galaxy game file size is a pretty manageable 31GB on PS5, but it's double that on PS4.

I am impressed! There are quite a few games, with major differences between PS4/5 file sizes.

I need that new hard drive asap. I'm running out of room.

I bought a 2TB WD Black SN850 in August . What’s holding you up?? 1TB I’ve seen for 169 or so on sale

Writing from Australia, we can get a 1 TB 2.5" drive for about AU$59 (US$44) and a 2 TB drive for AU$85 (US$64). Both of these drives are Western Digital and support USB3.0 (not that important on a PS4 but you definitely want this for a PS5).

It must be noted that the preferred storage expansion on a PS5 is an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (check for compatibility) and while you can use a hard disk drive it will only be used to play PS4 games or transfer PS5 games to the main and expanded SSD's.

Wow, pretty sizable difference. Maybe it's different quality textures for PS4 vs. PS4 Pro?

excaliburps42d ago

Nope. Due to PS5 compression tech...

It can't be just the compression. Too big of a difference. Kraken is nice but it isn't magical. It has to be the difference in contents as well.

You have to duplicate files a lot for HDDs compared to SSDs as well because of the much lower seek times.

That's why so many last gen games were way bigger than you'd expect - lots of the same file being needed in different places so you basically duplicate it all over the place to keep loading efficient (at the cost of storage). It was an awkward but necessary workaround.

I don't think this is the case here. That's what you do when you have to stream a lot of stuff. The simplest explanation is, it is compression tech + only high-quality assets for PS5 version. Last-gen version has to support both, PS4 and PS4 Pro. I'm just guessing, though.

BTW, the difference in size between PS5 and Series X/ S versions is exactly like the difference between the efficiency of kraken vs zlib, around 30%. To me this means there is a lot more going on with PS4 and PS4 Pro version than just different compression method.

Just stop. It’s clear you do not know what you are talking about.

So please, enlighten us why there is 100% difference in size between PS4/ PS4 Pro and PS5 versions. If you believe it's just compression than you clearly don't know either and believe in fairy tales. What I said is exactly what I had experienced in our previous release. We had duplicate assets for PS4 and PS4 Pro. High quality textures for Pro, videos in 1080p vs. 4k for Pro, etc. It all adds up. I also said that I'm guessing here. What I do know though, is that there is no fracking way that this 100% difference in size is JUST thanks to Kraken compression.
