IGN: Console Showdown - PS3 vs. Wii vs. 360

Welcome to IGN Australia's 2008 Console Showdown, where we pit the games of the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 against one another in an all-out brawl. Over the next few days, we'll be looking at which system had the best games this year in a genre by genre breakdown, we'll be comparing the games available on WiiWare, PSN and XBLA, and we'll be crunching numbers to judge each system's performance based on scores. We're kicking the features off today, however, with a look at system exclusives. Which console had the strongest line-up of exclusives in 2008?

Valkyria Chronicles was a great game. I'm glad reviewers everywhere are giving it props. Hopefully more people will pick it up.

That's been the problem for me lately though... too many good games out there I can't keep up!

Next on my list is Siren: Blood Curse. Been putting that off because I've been debating about upping my hard drive or waiting for it on Blu-ray.

Ahh screw it, I'm buying it tonight! :D

Quite Possibly this game is the biggest sleeper hit. I don't know about the sales numbers, but it's definitely an EXCELLENT VIDEO GAME regardless.

anyone else notice that some of the game ratings were alittle....off?
Example:they used the score from AU for Mario Kart wii which was 7.9 when the ign us gave it a 8.5.Why pick the lower score...this happened on alot of games from what i looked up.

But then again, I have been a winner over all ever since I bought all three consoles. In the end, I don't play consoles, I play games. Kudos to Sony though for pulling out all the stops this year and making a great leap in the console arena.

You couldn't have gone wrong with either the PS3 or 360 this year. Personally I would have chosen (on reflection) the PS3 alone because my favourite games were almost all multi-plats (Fallout 3, COD:WAW, FarCry2) and those which were exclusive were on PS3 (LBP).

I didn't like MGS4 - it's just a mediocre 3PS with a convoluted story...but if that's your bag, sobeit :/

I will say one thing however: if you want to enjoy some of the best games this year (the multiplats I listed), you gotta get them on PC - COD5 and Fallout are incredible on PC...and FarCry is beautiful.

It was pretty obvious this year that Sony won in exclusives and despite which side of the fence you're on you should at least be able to admit that. The majority of 360's exclusives failed to live up to expectations (Banjo, Last Remnant, Infinite Undiscovery, etc.) and the rest of their good ones were primarily sequels to solid franchises. Sony came in with sequels and several new IP's completely.

The reason it may not be so apparent is that MS is just simply doing a much better job at marketing their platform. The fact that you can still walk in to a store and people are saying "the PS3 has no games" is a direct result of advertising. Most games are multiplatform and the both consoles literally have an equal amount of GOOD EXCLUSIVES. For every 360 exclusive Sony has a match for it. The 360 may have an overall bigger library because of an extra year on the market, but most of those games don't matter as they scored less than average or ultimately don't matter.

In retrospect, a gamer should own both consoles. There's no reason to miss out on great games simply because you want to fanboy'up. I own both and I play both. There are things I like and hate about each console, but at the end of the day, I play games, not consoles.

We need Sony to step it up because if they don't, then even the fanboys will begin to see that when you have little or no competition that MS will get lazy and your exclusives will slowly go away, as MS starts spending a lot less money on stuff. THey are only spending like crazy right now because they want to solidify themselves as the better console in your eyes (plus they have to make you forget about the high chance of your console RROD'ing on you). If Sony just bent over and took it up the ass, MS would stop spending money because there'd be no competition. So, as long as Sony delivers, MS will keep trying harder and in return Sony will try harder, which means better games for everyone.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm sick of sequels and we need some new IP's and if you've noticed, this "competition" has created a lot of new IP's for the first time in a long time.

Yeah, but the reality is that most people cannot afford two consoles. And most of the time, people are content with one.

It's just the purest of hardcore gamers that owns two or three consoles in one period of time.

And Sony's PS3 platform alone in 2008 with just exclusive games is already very long costing a lot of money for those who want to buy all of them.

And that doesn't even include the longer list of excellent multiplatform games like COD, GRID, Dead Space, Prince of Persia, etc.

While I don't own both consoles, I do own TWO: a PS3 and a PC. I'm not really missing out on the "important" XBOX software because many 360 "exclusives" get ported to PC eventually.

8.9 is not bad all. I thoroughly enjoyed the game and I feel that score is pretty accurate. Review scores should not matter anyway as long as you have fun with the game.

Congratulations PS3. It truly had the best games this years hands down. The 360 had a solid year also, but it wasn't as strong as it's 2007 line up. The Wii had a decent year, but I'm still not impressed.

I think both consoles had a great year. You really can't be upset when there are this many good games out. Well maybe your wallet will be upset, but nothing else. If I had to choose I would say the PS3 had the best year for games. GT5p, MGS4 and LBP are probably top 3 favorite games of all time and they all came out in the same year... WOW! For the xbox fans they had Gears 2, Fable 2 and Left 4 Dead. How can you loose?

2009 is looking great for both consoles as well. (PS3) GOW3, Uncharted 2, GT5, Killzone 2, (360) Halo Wars, Halo 3 recon, Splinter Cell etc.

Finally, Sony are getting some praise for their hard work. Their first-party development teams are definately (in my opinion) the ace up their sleeves. They have some immense talent working for them such as Fumitio Ueda (Team Ico) and the famous David Jaffe.

If Sony keep the pressure building through 2009 I have little doubt that they will reclaim their position at the top the field again, and with titles like 'God of War 3', 'White Knight Chronicles', 'Killzone 2' and many others on the horizon, it looks increasingly likely.

Shame most of the 360's main titles were also "games for windows". Seems kind of like a cheap way to clip down many big titles for 360 owners to inflate the results in PS3's favor.

I think many media sites are doing their damndest to paint PS3 as the winner when it clearly has not been. Is it any wonder why game informer consistantly promotes the most expensive gaming options as the best choice while it is sold as the official magazine of gamestop and EB?
