Nippon Ichi owes the vast majority of its current success to Disgaea, the 2003 PlayStation 2 tactical-RPG that came from out of left field to become a surprise hit. Disgaea's success can largely be ascribed to two factors: Its compulsively addictive stat-intensive gameplay, and its quirky sense of humor. To date, most of NIS' follow-ups have focused on the grinding half of the game, reaching what must surely have been that particular meme's ultimate expression in the form of last year's Soul Nomad & the World Eaters, which boasted the ability to gain thousands of levels in the course of a single battle.
