They got most of the atmosphere, but gameplay seems like complete garbage.

It wasn't cheesy when it came out. I got it on release and the last thing people were saying is, "this game is cheesy".

Okay. Everyone I was gaming with didn't say it. I don't think it was the overall sentiment. I heard other adjectives but that wasn't one of them.

Only thing I found cheesy on its release was the intro going through all the characters. It's a good job they edited the background music too, because the originals "I've got a shotgun" was ridiculous, even by 1996 standards.

Some elements were gamey, I give you that. Games as a whole have some awkward presentations and writing. But the overall reception of this game, to my knowledge, was that is was revolutionary, awesome, fun, difficult, new, fresh and etc. I just don't remember a bunch of people thinking it was cheesy, enough to call the game a cheesy experience when it came out. Crazy to think there are comments on here saying "Looks terrible, honestly" when it looks almost exactly the same as the original's aesthetics, and maybe even better due to some dynamic lighting and shadows. It's mad to think back when they made this, this was state of the art, and the game's backgrounds being regarded as high end cgi renders, and could only exist as a static background. Now we have engines that run this in real time, but better, at ridiculous frames and resolution, yet it still looks dated by todays standards. That's the charm, though. The modder did a great job in keeping the visuals extremely faithful, though his modelling skills for the zombies either aren't there or they are just a sloppy placeholder. You could imagine Capcom releasing something like this as a novelty, seeing that a complete remake like this is unlikely. Hopefully it doesn't get a cease and desist and better still, it ends up getting a mod that allows it to be played in VR. That'd be a bit of a dream.

Being you quoted me, I'll also bring up, in the same post, I said that they pretty much nailed the visuals.

It was the gameplay I had issue with.

If you're going to critique someone's post, you should at least be honest on the context.
