Deathloop Is A Strong Contender For Game Of The Year

When the trailers for Deathloop were first released I wasn’t excited. To me, Deathloop just reminded me of Dishonored with a new environment and characters. Dishonored was an amazing series but I wanted something fresh with a whole new concept. I didn’t want a failed attempt at holding on to a blueprint of a successful game series, only to create something mediocre in the long run. 

Man. I couldn’t have been more wrong. 

Fast forward to now, and I can honestly say that I haven't played a game this fun in a very long time. All of my doubts about Deathloop have been swiftly put to rest and I’m enjoying every second of it.

After playing some of it, I still give the game an 8. I don't know how this game got a 10🤔 and the PC version had some bugs

I'm with you. I'm playing it too and I think the game is solid but this "10/10 instant GOTY contender" narrative is crazy. I'm just not seeing in this what sites like IGN and Gamespot are seeing in it. Maybe it's because it's been a relatively soft year in terms of instant classics, as I believe in any other year this would just be another solid FPS.

For my money, I still think Returnal is the best game I've played this year but we'll see how the rest of the year plays out.

Bethesdas other titles such as TES and Fallout get perfect scores whilst being poorly optimised, bug ridden games with poor voice acting, bad animations and have dated graphics. If any other studio released a game in the same state as those two, they would be review bombed. Instead the industry gives then GOTY status so its not really surprising to see.

Arkane are great, so are iD and Tango but Bethesda Softworks get special treatment.

Gamers don't buy games if there below a 8 these days sadly 😔
Same with "hades" great game for sure but 10s? Solid 8

This game looks so mediocre. Looks last gen everything, gameplay, graphics, design and all. This game game just doesn't catch my interest. I'd rather have Returnal win GOTY over this mediocracy.

"Mediocracy" is the completely wrong word and also you can't discount a game's GOTY credentials when you haven't even played it.

There is an ocean of difference between seeing gameplay and actually playing it.

Returnal was kind of crap in comparison for me though. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is my GOTY pick and easily GOAT as well

The primary genre and the characters appeal to the average gamer.

It just feels like they are trying too hard to be cool and edgy and I just can't get into it.

I agree, played for a few hours.. was alright- it's a shooter. I played through dishonored 1. I don't understand the hype. I am not saying it's a bad game but it didn't seem genre redefining in anyway.

I'm about 15 hours in, barely scratched the surface but am fully immersed in it. But I admittedly really like everything Arkane does. It's an 8.5 for me at the moment but feels like it's headed for a 9.

I can't help but think that there is some kind of eureka moment just around the corner. A particular power I unlocked made me have one of those "hell yeh" game-changing moments. The power turned out way better than I expected.

Agreed. Don’t get me wrong I like the game and it’s fun (my username is named after the main character) but I really don’t see how it’s GOTY or getting all this 10’s. I would say it’s a solid 8-8.5.
I should of waited for gamepass.

This whole dialoge would look quite a bit different if this was a SONY published game. It would be shoutet over all rooftops - but funny how this all changes now it is published by an X.

It is very unique and I love the art style but I find the gameplay unremarkable, even if the gameplay MECHANIC is unique.

Look at this fellow. Almost has the platinum while I'm still trying to figure out where the code for the delivery kiosks are located (don't tell me!). There's just so much hidden in the game. I do feel like a jerk playing Julianna knowing full well how those invasions screw me over in trying to get certain trophies.

I finished the story and I enjoyed the gameplay and the overall concept, but that ending felt pretty flat.

At least a solid 8/10 game for me, which is a pretty high score for me.

Returnal and Tales of Arise are both better than this game. Deathloop is a solid 8/10. I own all 3. Deathloop is a good game but it’s not GotY material.

Playing Tales at the same time as Deathloop and agree that it is a better game. I guess that's subjective though. Either way Deathloop is good but definitely not GOTY.

Because Deathloop is more accessible it’s likely more of a GOTY contender because the only hard games that win that award have Souls in the title.

I don't think it's GotY material. I really enjoy the game because I like the artstyle and game play loop. It reminds me of Dishonored a bit but I think Returnal is a much better game and has a better chance at GotY. Ratchet & Clank is also a much better choice.

Looks like they running out of time and games to nominate for GOTY 2021 so Deathloop it is I guess not to mention the very frequent showing and marketing on this is too obvious that they were rooting for this game for awhile by media outlets.
I'm not yet playing it but for its art style it's already a miss for me not my type at all.

The game is absolutely fantastic on every level. I wouldn't be upset if it won GotY(or Returnal or Arise for that matter).
However, my money will be on Battlefield 2042. I think Dice is doing something really special there and they are going to make waves.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus would be my pick of the year. I'd say Deathloop, Resident Evil Village, Life is Strange: True Colors and Mass Effect Legendary Edition were all phenomenal as well.

This game gives me "The Incredibles" vibes in terms of music & setting. It has a blend of like Team Fortress or Half Life game style but very much feels like Dishonored. This & VILLage are 2021 GOTY.

I didn't hate my time with the game at all. It's a good 7 or 8/10 game. But it's no where near a game of the year contender for me.

I wish I could say this game is Game of the Year... but its not. It has a bunch of issues.

- Enemies appear out of nowhere; encountered enemies just walking through doors to get at me
- Using your knife or even just kicking (see videogamedunky on YouTube and you'll see what I mean) is just OP, what's even the point of most guns?
- AI is so dumb (even Julianna's can be dumb and she's meant to be tough!)
- Matchmaking takes such a long time (maybe due to limited players)
- When you are matched up, often it tends to be either you or the other player is overpowered; there's no balance
- No real way to see what items you get next playing as Julianna... like is it random? When do I get a cool Colt skin?
- The game kind of just... ends? No matter the ending you get, it's like a 3 minute scene and its over? Like it took me 15 hours to get here and that's... it?
