Gran Turismo 7's PS5, PS4 Campaign Requires an Online Connection

Gran Turismo 7’s refreshed single player campaign aims to capture the spirit of old games – in all but one area. As noted in small print on the PlayStation Blog, you’ll need an “Internet connection” in order to enjoy the solo experience, as well as its car collecting GT Café mode and Livery Editor. Presumably this game is going to be quite light if you don’t have your console online.

Urm...yeah, no thanks

There's literally no need for it...

Seraphim1334d ago

truly unfortunate. there is absolutely no reason any single player portion of any game should require internet connectivity.

giveyerheadawobble1334d ago

Well, I know why.

Microtransactions and in game economy is all but confirmed now. This is how gaming is now. They can shove it up their arseholes for all I care.

Extermin8or3_1334d ago

Plenty of reason in this case. The whole game is linked together, your progression is carried across everything. On pa3 gt players found a way to edit the save files and give themselves loads of credits and get fully upgraded cars etc.

Seraphim1334d ago

@giveyerheadawobble

I suspect it goes further than that alone but yes, unfortunately that is how gaming is and only more games will follow suite over the years.

badz1491334d ago

Is FiA not a HUGE reason for it? I think the online requirement is put there by the FiA, not Sony. Not a single SP game from Sony requires an always online condition aside from GT Sports and I think the FiA is behind this decision. Maybe years later when they decide to move on to GT8, maybe in 2026 or 2027. they will let the FiA license for GT7 to expire and will allow offline saves.

dbcoops1334d ago

Willing to bet on any given day you play a game or maybe multiple games that need an internet connection. If you use PS Plus you already have one if you use gamepass you have one. I get it though the fodder articles have been in extreme abundance here especially since Sony's showcase.

Sayai jin1334d ago

These are the people that make Sony think they can charge you $80 dollars to have a game on PS4 and PS5...aka "dual entitlement" or MS thinking they can double the price on XBL Gold. Simpin' for a company is so shameful.

--Onilink--1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

Yes and on the day that I happen to lose my internet connection for any reason whatsoever or Sony decides to shutdown the servers for a game, I fully expect to be able to continue playing something that is not multiplayer

lodossrage1335d ago

See, this is exactly why I didn't buy GT Sport.

I was hoping they wouldn't do this again. Guess I won't be buying GT7 either.

PitbullMonster1334d ago

GT Sports is mainly a Multiplayer game....

lodossrage1334d ago

Yeah but when servers for games go down then what?

You're left with a husk of nothing

Shane Kim1334d ago

The reason they shut servers down is couse no one is playing.

lodossrage1334d ago

@shane Kim

Yeah we know and get that. But that's exactly why single player shouldn't be online mandatory.

dbcoops1334d ago

Yet you just used an internet connection to post your comment, hmmmmm.

lodossrage1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

And??? that comment doesn't even make sense.

The internet isn't a physical product I'm paying $70 for.

The internet isn't going to just sit on my shelf without any use if the internet just vanishes.

Unless the game is free-to-play, I will NEVER accept single player that needs online.

People like you are exactly why these companies (not just gaming) get away with the things they do.

RaidenBlack1334d ago

Online, for solo play?
Aw, c'mon!

Magog1334d ago

Good. It's the only way to prevent cheaters.

XiNatsuDragnel1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

In my opinion it's a bad thing I'm not promote an always online future thank you very much.

Magog1334d ago

Why would you ever disconnect your console from the internet? It makes no sense.

XiNatsuDragnel1333d ago

Magog

My boy doesn't know reality of people's lives eg power outage, hurricanes, remote regions, etc... In my opinion you got think about this carefully.

Orchard1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

What has this got to do with cheaters? This isn't an anti-cheat measure. And even if it was, why would you care if someone else cheats in a single player experience?

As for why would people disconnect from the internet... outages - Comcast here in the US have terrible up time. Others also might travel with their console (I know I do when travelling for work). I expect my single player games to still function.

And what happens when Sony inevitably kills the servers? I have a $70 paperweight? Great.

Magog1334d ago

The game also has an online pvp aspect so the single save is protected by the always online requirement.

Orchard1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

Right... but the most you can do is unlock the best cars... there's no cheating in terms of getting something others cannot obtain.

That isn't enough to warrant an always online singleplayer gamemode.

darkrider1334d ago

Dude try harder. Go find another opinion piece from that Microsoft site to say stupid stuff about the ps5....

1334d ago
Knushwood Butt1334d ago

So hack the game offline, then take those hacked cars online.

Orchard1333d ago (Edited 1333d ago )

@Knushwood You’d still only be able to hack cars that other players can unlock too.

If you could hack unachievable cars with fake stats offline and take them online, that would mean vehicle performance data is in the save game - if PD are doing that then they must be amateur 🤷

Rule number one of network programming is never trust the client.

Plus what kind of cheats are we talking about? As far as I’m aware the PS5 and all recent PS4 firmwares have not been hacked/exploited, and the game is not on PC.

Imalwaysright1334d ago

Oh yes, a lot of cheaters in the single player portion of the game would be really bad!

Amplitude1334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

@Magog:

The game is was, but go play Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 right now to understand why this is an issue

spss111334d ago (Edited 1334d ago )

It concerns me how many gamers have no issue with giving up control. Subscription services, sp online only, streaming etc. all of it is bad for future of gaming imo. I prefer a library of games to own & play at anytime online or offline. I dont want to rely on servers & my internet connection. Especially since I never play online except for the occasional coop game.

lodossrage1334d ago

FINALLY, someone understands.

But we saw this coming. And it's not just in gaming. People have been conditioned to slowly but surely give up things like ownership and control for the sake of "comfort".

Tetsujin1334d ago

Outside patches and/or the occasional co-op, offline gaming should still be a standard.

Before arguing cheaters, have the offline and online different; this way what you do/have doesn't carry over and you have to actually show skill.

Before arguing patches/updates, be transparent and announce ahead of time so people can plan accordingly.

No achievements/trophies tied to online.

From a customer standpoint, this comes as concerning because there are times I have to watch what I do online due to data caps from my ISP, and having to keep a constant connection online just because a whole 4 people complaining about cheaters because they lack skill shouldn't cause the rest of us grief.
