Kotaku review: The Ascent Makes Good On Cyberpunk 2077's Promise

Kotaku writes:

Every now and again, a game comes along that simply blows you away.

That’s what it’s been like playing The Ascent, the debut title from the 12-person studio Neon Giant. Let me be clear: it’s far from perfect. The build I played on PC suffered a ton of micro-stuttering, particularly when bodies or barrels would explode.

The artists, graphics designers, voice actors and animators get an A. The combat, loot, level and quest designers get a C. The UI/UX designers and AI programmers get a big fat F.

If they added a sprint button, this game would be 6 hours max.

I'm disappointed with Cyberpunk 2077 as much as the next guy, but they aren't comparable. And no, this isn't "the Cyberpunk we deserve."

I'm definitely enjoying it more than I did Cyberpunk, and I was playing the PC version.

Agree on the UI/UX part. It's beyond bad. Hope they realize it and do an update.

The UI definitely needs improvement especially the map and stat details.

Of course Kotaku would think this is the best thing since sliced bread. To say it makes good on cyberpunk's promise is one hell of a ridiculous statement , and not surprising coming from a garbage site like Kotaku

I'm saying one small indie game made by 12 people is not going to "Make good" on cyberpunk "promise".

Lol, you think this game makes me jealous? I'll take it or leave it without a second thought.

I'm sorry but trying to compare a AAA game made by several 100 of ppls vs a budget game made by 12 ppl is like comparing a Horror B movie to a Marvel Disney movie.

Now regarding Accent, it's great for what it has to offer and is quite fun but in no way shape, or form it's trying to replace your big AAA game just like Concrete Genie is a great Ps4 title that isn't trying to replace TLOU2.

Now like I said I do like Ascent because it really captures perfectly the desperate gloomy Cyberpunk vibe (Blade Runner, Ghost in the shell, Observer, etc.) and can be quite fun to play in COOP.
but I really hope that they fix how the menu works (like having a map button).

People on here were happy to do so for Returnal, and they charged $70 for that. :^)

Since when did Marvel Disney Movies become the Gold standard lol? Or are you trying to say that as a developer, CDProjekt Red are average like the Marvel films?

Two totally different games. The only thing they have in common is a abundance in neon lights.

The Ascent: Cyber Heist Review - Total Gaming Addicts

The Ascent’s Cyber Heist DLC doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it provides a satisfying way of extending your enjoyment of one of the best ARPGs of recent memory. The reliance on a non-specific Macguffin means the story doesn’t have the agency it needs, but the excellent core gameplay makes this an enjoyable, if short, way for fans of The Ascent to extend their time in the game.
