Top 4 game IPs that could benefit from a turn-based spin off

Turn based games are in the middle of a renaissance of sorts in the past few years. Not only are long established turn-based games like Persona 5 and the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei V at the peak of their popularity, but other franchises have begun to dip their toes into the turn-based RPG scene, such as Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Metal Slug Tactics, and Monster Hunter Stories. The reason is very simple: Turn-based RPGs are a good way to diversify a franchise, generally cost less to produce, and allow IPs from genres with higher barriers of entry to be more accessible to new potential fans.

As gaming has become more generally accepted, the potential audience has gone up, and the average level of player skill has gone down. This is why once great genre’s like (non-Smash) fighting games are struggling to find new players and break into the mainstream: The skill level needed to feel competent is too high for the vast majority of modern gamers, who then go on to play more casual fare. Games with lower barriers to entry, games where small victories are more tangible than “I got curb stomped slightly less brutally,” games like battle royales and MOBAs.

So what franchises could benefit from a foray into turn-based RPG systems? Let’s talk about it.

A turn based fighting game needs to be a thing. It could make a great learning tool for those interested in getting good at fighting games.

no doubt. while I enjoyed FF XII, XV & VII:R I badly still want a new turn based FF. I'd say Dragon Quest will have to do but I feel like I heard they're moving away from turn based as well. Even the new Trails ofseries is having a dual combat system that allows players to choose between turn based and action. So at least they're giving gamers the choice. Needless to say, if anything, I feel like that's the best solution for these games if their goal is attracting new players. It seems like before we know it almost all RPGs are going to be playing basically the same as action games. DQXI was such an amazing game & one of very few AAA turn based RPGs launched last gen.

Personally a few off the top of my head that I'd like to see a turn based game developed of would be:
Disgaea
Ni No Kuni (don't recall the exact system of 2) but the original, I so wish that was turn based
Fire Emblem

Surely there's many more but I'm tired AF, past bedtime for me. I absolutely loved Disgaea 1 and while I've bought a few other titles, including Disgaea 6 which just released on the Switch, I'm just not a tactics fan/gamer. Disgaea 1 was some magical starburst in time where I was able to hunker down and really enjoy a turn based title. That's also why Fire Emblem is on the list. I'd love to experience that world in a turn based setting.

I don't really have a specific game in mind but I'd like to see a big budget RPG with quality art direction designed around turn based combat.

For example what would TW3 be like with a sexy cinematic turn based system? I didn't think the combat was great or even good, it was either far too easy or you had to dance around like a lunatic to avoid getting one shot by a peasant with a pitchfork. Some of the strategy involving oils etc was underused because on some difficulties there was no need.

Yeah, I couldn't get into TW3 because the combat was pure ass. Make it like Yakuza 7, where you can move a bit for positioning and attack through commands instead of real time and I'd have beaten that game. I go back to it once a year, every year, and bounce off of it after a few hours because of the ass controls.

Lots of Improvements Coming to MythForce on June 26

"First-person roguelikes like Gunfire Reborn and Roboquest can be quite fun when done well. Another such game is MythForce, which comes from Beamdog, the developer that brought Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 to modern platforms (while mostly ditching the co-op). MythForce features cartoon-like visuals and a fantasy theme, making it quite different from most of its peers. It will soon reach its "final form" via the upcoming Version 1.2 update," says Co-Optimus.
