Nintendo has passed along an official list of specs for the new Switch OLED.

I've said a few times that it would be uncharacteristic for Nintendo to release a more powerful system now when the regular switch is selling well with weak specs. For over 4 years a lot of Nintendo focused channels have been talking about a more powerful switch that will be able to play a lot of current gen games on Playstation and Xbox. I think Nintendo will make a more powerful handheld in 3 years because they want to port a lot more games to the switch

^^they just switched to a more viewable space type of screen that is the same physical dimensions as they existing one. So it is not a new size (physically) but a bigger viewing space (less of a border around the screen). And because they are using all the same internals... the new dock (w/built in LAN) will likely work with a previous model switch.

No, thats a war thats waged within the gaming community. Technology, really, can only move forward when consumers and fans of gaming are willing to accept it. All of this talk of backward compatibility slows things down and detracts and limits. When you start with a clean slate, the skies the limits. Unless one is ignorant, look at what the PS3 did for gaming, not only was it a console that survived double the lifespan of generations previous and more ways were found to keep it relevant, it changed console architecture forever. Sony built a machine to last a decade! Even PS4 didnt have nearly the impact or the footprint the PS3 did.

In my opinion, so long as gamers want to remain living in the past concerned with playing their old games (just keep your old consoles) and indie games (which is what Game Pass really is trying to promote, online indie games) that look like SNES ports, were never going to get anywhere. The PS3 took HUGE leaps that, love it or hate it, changed how we'll game from here on out. Backward compatible demand only hinders us.

@Neomahi i agree that ps3 was an excellent piece of hardware, probably released too early even for what power it held. However i dont think it changed console architecture forever, the next gen they went back to "regular architecture" again.

I dont get how supporting indies keeps us in the past. its rather the opposite, indies are experimental, they dare to take risks. Something like Returnal wouldnt exist if indies didnt carry the roguelike genre singlehandedly. I think its required for indies to stay relevant if the industry wants to move forward, because they are the pioneers when it comes to new genres of games. When has any of the big publishers released anything that isnt allready in an established genre? The only one i can think of is Media Molecule with LBP and Dreams.

I have a feeling they wanted to use that new screen for the switch pro/2 but chip issues prohibits them from doing that. So they decided to use it on what they have already. As for adding lan to the dock, the og switch had two usb ports on the outside and one on the inside and usually that one was for the lan adapter (sold separately) so now they just decided to replace that usb with this.

Im willing to bet the new dock will work with the og model.

I don't know but that seems far fetched. They would have secured chip supply via contracts years ago in time for the projected release period, which is late 2021 apparently). We all know Nintendo loves it when demand is greater than supply so they wouldnt be fazes by the situation we are in today.

I think it's more like Nintendo doing their own thing - that is releasing obsolete hardware in a fresh coat of paint knowing that the press will praise them and people will gobble it up.

Good. If you are going to improve the specs, make a new generation of hardware. This half-step nonsense needs to end. You either end up with something like the New 3DS, which has a small handful of games designed for it that actually take advantage of the new system, or you get the One X/PS4 Pro situation where no games are designed around the new hardware.

I've been saying this for years. I've wanted smaller bezels since launch and an OLED for better color and contrast as well as power saving. I was hoping that if we ever got it though that we'd get a spec boost similar to the New 3DS over the old one. I figured when they halved the power consumption of the Tegra chip that they'd make way for a beefier version or simply put a second one on there for a Pro model.

While i agree with you, i still think it's like an abusive relationship and not okay. Yes, Nintendo gives you flowers and sweets (releasing games, supporting games like Bayonetta, Deadly Premonition and MAU 3 and other good stuff). But then it smacks you and calls you names (selling you cardboard, overpriced accessories, overpriced consoles, whole drifting controller BS, less quality games and more remasters for higher price, locking features behind rare amiibos, forcing people's hand with FOMO and limited time game releases (like with Mario 64), worst paid online service, blocking YouTube and Twitch videos with gameplay of their games and so on).

Which is still bad, but you're right, it's business and people are giving them money. To tell you the truth, i would take the money too, if i was in their place.

Slowly, indeed. It's amazing that the Vita - a 2012 handheld with far weaker specs - still has things like folders and on-device voice and text messaging. And the Vita launched back then for $249 with an OLED screen when that tech was far pricier. Sure, Switch has a bigger screen, but OLED prices have come way down over the years.

I don't understand how they can justify this move. Just replace the base Switch with this model and keep charging $299 - they'd still definitely be making profit off the hardware.

They do it because it’s their business interest on the line. Selling equipment 3 times above its actual manufacturing cost just because you are Nintendo is kinda their thing. It’s why they are a multi billion dollar company.

I find it pretty hilarious how many people screamed they didn’t want a Vita because it was in a grey area of portable vs console. And how it was to expensive. Only to go crazy over the switch which struggles between being a portable or console. And cost MUCH more overall then the Vita did once you include peripherals and the later.

I bought 1 vita with a 32 and 64 gb card and all the games were 40 bucks and below. Overall investment on just Vita was about 500.

I bought a switch, pro controller and 256 memory card was roughly the same cost but every game is 60 (and honestly the games aren’t worth the asking price in my honest opinion) cost 500. And I also bought a switch lite for my sons which cost an additional 200.

So seeing how gamers killed Vita (as much as people like to say it was Sony lack of support. If you don’t buy something it’s hard to support it) by 1st heralding the 3DS up as a cheaper champion and 2nd not buying it which is nuts to me. Because when the switch came out it had a third of Vitas functionalities and for at least 2 of its first years was getting all of the Vitas ports.

People didn’t hate the Vita because it was a bad system. They hated the Vita because it wasn’t Nintendo

They could have used this opportunity to increase the power a bit (yes Nintendo don't really go the power route, but it would have enabled more ports to come across) and storage is incredibly cheap now. Now the rumours and hype behind a Switch Pro is out in the open, Nintendo could've caught wind and then postponed the Switch XL and gone for better specs and sold a more expensive unit that many would've bought.

Nintendo do try new things. I give them that, it's great when companies will take a risk. Nintendo were the guys who made sure quality games were the way forward back in the days. But because they were playing catch up after the Wii U, they crumpled and allowed every rubbish game on their system...

To me, Nintendo aren't this quality brand they used to be. They are a strong brand, but I feel at times they don't quite get it.

Look at other comments, because it's a screen upgrade, people won't trade in their current Switch for this new one. If it was a performance upgrade sure, I see many people recycling their console for the boost.

Me personally the only thing that I think is a good design on the old model is the new kickstand. The rest is more of the same.

Do you have one? I got my Series S first then got an X. I was surprised how well the S kept up with the X. I do wish it had a disc drive, but the Series S is a beast of a console at $300. You still get many of the Series X features, the fast loading, performance mode, etc. Its a great bedroom console for the kids and that is where mine resides now that I got my X. Amazing they were able to get that out at the price they did, same cost as the regular switch!. Even without Gamepass, the games are on sale enough that you can get a good library going at a relatively low cost. Sure there arent the nintendo properties, but I think price conscious families should know that there are alternatives. Hell, there are more old N64 games available on Xbox that there are on the Switch! Perfect Dark, Banjo games, Conker, etc. Microsoft has positioned themselves really well here and Nintendo just keeps marching to the beat of their own drum.

I love Nintendo's games, but the pricing being midway between the Xbox Series S and the digital version of the PS5 is...questionable in terms of value. I do have a mclassic cable that I sometimes plug into my switch and it boosts the resolution to 1440p. I'll just stick with that. Where's Mario Kart 9, Fzero, a new Super Mario Strikers, New Mario Tennis, New Waverace???? The dedicated Nintendo fan usually gets burned. Half of their games are wii u ports and since most casuals didn't buy a wii u they were all content with the wii u Ports because they didn't play them while the Nintendo fan got screwed playing Mario kart 8 for another 5 yrs on top of the few years they put into the wii u Mario kart 8. Nintendo is extremely lazy because they know everyone will continue to buy their games. They were so lazy they couldn't even make Mario Sunshine in the Collection 60fps. Unbelievable.

If they are going to stick with the Switch they should release a new one every 4 years if they want to keep up with hardware improvements. And the dock needs to have separate hardware to boost the power.

Expect the Switch 2 to have lesser specs than expected then because they like to do the minimum there is.

lol. It doesn't have to be capable of full 4K or anything. The Switch is very underpowered compared to the 8 year old OG PS4 - there's a lot of room for improvement between the current Switch and a hypothetical 4K Switch without going the full way.

straight up disappointing. this was a wasted opportunity imo. most ppl playing on switch don't really care about the visuals as much as say xbox and playstation and its not even capable of doing the stuff those consoles can do so its weird that the biggest upgrade is to the screen itself. the things OLED screens improve are things like HDR etc which Switch doesn't even support so I'm baffled why the biggest upgrade expense went to the screen. They could have just made a bigger LCD screen and it would cost less. a wired LAN connection? Was this a priority for Switch? Online multiplayer on switch isn't like throwing down on some eSports type scenario. The Switch online services are barely existent as is and I doubt anybody playing Splatoon multiplayer are worried about ping times - most probably dont even know what that means. and a bigger kickstand?? this feels like a feature to throw in the additional info section or make sure its seen in the product shot, not featured for an extended period of time in the announcement trailer. This has cash grab written all over it and sadly ppl will buy it up.

Console generations are getting longer and longer, so why would Nintendo release a completely new device that is essentially the same console? Like I said before, Switch is still currently selling by the bucket load.

Nintendo should do a TV only switch. A cheap little console that can only he played on a TV. Make it the cheapest option. Think like the PS Vita TV.
