No improvements to the actual specs? Well that's disappointing.

darthv721441d ago

Should call it switch XL since its mostly a screen size upgrade.

Such a missed opportunity

neutralgamer19921441d ago

Darth

That's why I am so happy we have PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox. This industry is moving forward because of these two brands, because if it was up to Nintendo we would still be stuck with specs from two generations ago with the price point of current generations

_SilverHawk_1441d ago

I've said a few times that it would be uncharacteristic for Nintendo to release a more powerful system now when the regular switch is selling well with weak specs. For over 4 years a lot of Nintendo focused channels have been talking about a more powerful switch that will be able to play a lot of current gen games on Playstation and Xbox. I think Nintendo will make a more powerful handheld in 3 years because they want to port a lot more games to the switch

Tacoboto1441d ago

Who would've thought, of all rumors to be right, we get the Ethernet port. Wonderful.

(The Surface-style kickstand is nice but Ethernet really struck me as the least-likely rumor from everything reported on this)

TheAgeOfZ1441d ago (Edited 1441d ago )

The screen is barely even bigger though.

darthv721441d ago

^^they just switched to a more viewable space type of screen that is the same physical dimensions as they existing one. So it is not a new size (physically) but a bigger viewing space (less of a border around the screen). And because they are using all the same internals... the new dock (w/built in LAN) will likely work with a previous model switch.

bouzebbal1441d ago

A useless sku… Nintendo being Nintendo

Wintersun6161441d ago

@darthv72 "the new dock (w/built in LAN) will likely work with a previous model switch."

Knowing Nintendo, they will go out of their way to make sure it does not, and vice versa.

neomahi1441d ago

@ neutralgamer1992

No, thats a war thats waged within the gaming community. Technology, really, can only move forward when consumers and fans of gaming are willing to accept it. All of this talk of backward compatibility slows things down and detracts and limits. When you start with a clean slate, the skies the limits. Unless one is ignorant, look at what the PS3 did for gaming, not only was it a console that survived double the lifespan of generations previous and more ways were found to keep it relevant, it changed console architecture forever. Sony built a machine to last a decade! Even PS4 didnt have nearly the impact or the footprint the PS3 did.

In my opinion, so long as gamers want to remain living in the past concerned with playing their old games (just keep your old consoles) and indie games (which is what Game Pass really is trying to promote, online indie games) that look like SNES ports, were never going to get anywhere. The PS3 took HUGE leaps that, love it or hate it, changed how we'll game from here on out. Backward compatible demand only hinders us.

Michiel19891441d ago

@Neomahi i agree that ps3 was an excellent piece of hardware, probably released too early even for what power it held. However i dont think it changed console architecture forever, the next gen they went back to "regular architecture" again.

I dont get how supporting indies keeps us in the past. its rather the opposite, indies are experimental, they dare to take risks. Something like Returnal wouldnt exist if indies didnt carry the roguelike genre singlehandedly. I think its required for indies to stay relevant if the industry wants to move forward, because they are the pioneers when it comes to new genres of games. When has any of the big publishers released anything that isnt allready in an established genre? The only one i can think of is Media Molecule with LBP and Dreams.

UltraNova1441d ago

Well everyone will rush to praise them for all this...innovation... and people will line up for days to buy one so yeah it's another sunny day in Nintendoland.

darthv721441d ago

I have a feeling they wanted to use that new screen for the switch pro/2 but chip issues prohibits them from doing that. So they decided to use it on what they have already. As for adding lan to the dock, the og switch had two usb ports on the outside and one on the inside and usually that one was for the lan adapter (sold separately) so now they just decided to replace that usb with this.

Im willing to bet the new dock will work with the og model.

UltraNova1441d ago (Edited 1441d ago )

Darth,

I don't know but that seems far fetched. They would have secured chip supply via contracts years ago in time for the projected release period, which is late 2021 apparently). We all know Nintendo loves it when demand is greater than supply so they wouldnt be fazes by the situation we are in today.

I think it's more like Nintendo doing their own thing - that is releasing obsolete hardware in a fresh coat of paint knowing that the press will praise them and people will gobble it up.

LOGICWINS1441d ago

They did it to protect the fee fees of people like me who own the original lol. It makes business sense though. Nintendo want people to buy they're consoles at launch without having to worry about an updated model a few years later.

I'm sure the REAL Switch 2 will have all the bells and whistles. A new chip will be out by then and 60fps will be the norm.

edeprez1441d ago (Edited 1441d ago )

How is that business sense? Making products you don't have to/ don't feel the need to upgrade to? It is a consumer friendly move I guess, but they would have millions more people buying this model if consumers felt that they were missing out on better graphics or certain games/ game modes. I know I lot of people that wanted this just so those awful switch ports of current gen games were able to run acceptably.

badz1491441d ago

yeah...because the slim models for xbox and PS really ruined their generations, ha? and OneX and PS4Pro can't play original games made for their weaker siblings too, right?

seriously...

KingofBandits1440d ago

Just no. Nintendo does not care about its existing base of users with the original Switch. All these manufacturers live to remodel their hardware knowing that new and existing users will upgrade to it. Nintendo is just as guilty of this, especially in the hand held market.

CDbiggen1441d ago

I'm actually a bit in shock over that, I thought some performance boost was a given.

Teflon021441d ago

Literally why I knew these rumors weren't wprth even listening to. They didn't even sound realistic. Not surprised. But I did atleast think it was going to be a bit stronger like a New 3ds vs 3DS smh. So disappointing because I'd have loved to upgrade mine because I still avoid playing Xenoblade 2 because of the garbage res bothering me

JEECE1441d ago

Good. If you are going to improve the specs, make a new generation of hardware. This half-step nonsense needs to end. You either end up with something like the New 3DS, which has a small handful of games designed for it that actually take advantage of the new system, or you get the One X/PS4 Pro situation where no games are designed around the new hardware.

TreMillz1441d ago

I don't know if to call Nintendo insane or ballsy on the fact that this will 1. Cost MORE than the series S and 2. Only cost $50 less than a digital PS5....

-Hermit-1441d ago

Nintendo fanboys won't care, they don't hold Nintendo to the same standards expected from the rest for some reason. This is the same company that managed to convince their fans to buy cardboard 😐

Jin_Sakai1441d ago

Highly disappointing. Guess I’ll be waiting for Switch 2.

ElvisHuxley1441d ago

Not surprising though, is it? No one every complains about Nintendo. They never receive any kind of pressure from the consumer base to do better, so why would they?

sinspirit1441d ago

I've been saying this for years. I've wanted smaller bezels since launch and an OLED for better color and contrast as well as power saving. I was hoping that if we ever got it though that we'd get a spec boost similar to the New 3DS over the old one. I figured when they halved the power consumption of the Tegra chip that they'd make way for a beefier version or simply put a second one on there for a Pro model.

FallenAngel19841441d ago

But can they release controllers that don’t drift?

staticall1441d ago

They did, but you know, it costs extra ($69.99). Gotta love Nintendo, right? Right?..

ElvisHuxley1441d ago

I mean, if people give them a pass, and they always do, can you blame them?

got_dam1441d ago

If it wasnfor zelda I would never buy a Nintendo didn't product. Yeah that right, im one of those assholes that buy their garbage to play one series. And I will admit that I am exactly the kind of consumer that enables their bullshit. My apologies.

staticall1440d ago

@ElvisHuxley
While i agree with you, i still think it's like an abusive relationship and not okay. Yes, Nintendo gives you flowers and sweets (releasing games, supporting games like Bayonetta, Deadly Premonition and MAU 3 and other good stuff). But then it smacks you and calls you names (selling you cardboard, overpriced accessories, overpriced consoles, whole drifting controller BS, less quality games and more remasters for higher price, locking features behind rare amiibos, forcing people's hand with FOMO and limited time game releases (like with Mario 64), worst paid online service, blocking YouTube and Twitch videos with gameplay of their games and so on).

Which is still bad, but you're right, it's business and people are giving them money. To tell you the truth, i would take the money too, if i was in their place.

@got_dam
At least you're being honest, thank you!

KingofBandits1440d ago

This is news to me? What Switch joycons fix the drift issue?

staticall1440d ago

@KingofBandits
To be fair, no one said about Joy-Cons (sadly). I was talking about Pro Controller, as far as i know, it doesn't have a drift issue. But it costs $69.99

got_dam1440d ago

Wow, I got really fat fingered while typing out that last comment!!

JCOLE131951441d ago

Really wish they improved the specs.

FlyGuyHung1441d ago

They had to have known it'd get this type of reaction cause there is no reason their E3 Direct couldn't open with this "announcement".

strayanalog1441d ago

Introducing the Nintendo Switch Troll! Almost all the revisions you thought you needed, with none of the power you wanted.

ActualWhiteMan1441d ago

Wow… Nintendo being Nintendo. Same hardware, better screen. What a joke.

ScootaKuH1441d ago (Edited 1441d ago )

You forgot to mention the £50 price increase. This is sounding better all the time isn't it?

IanTH1441d ago

Yeah, that's the shocker to me. Not replacing the 4 year old console with an updated one at the same price, but offering another option that costs more? If it was a "Pro" or "X" like spec bump, that's one thing - keep the old one around to keep the buy-in price low. But the amount of profit they must be making off hardware, even with the added OLED, is ludicrous.

KingofBandits1440d ago

Is the screen better though? OLED has better color but on a portable device especially the burn in/image retention risk is very high

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 (NS) Review | VGChartz

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "No matter how you experience Capcom Fighting Collection 2 — online or offline, in single-player bouts against CPU opponents, or in versus mode against human rivals — you're likely to have a good time. While there are a couple of middling games, most of the titles on offer are good or great; a handful are even generationally great. Furthermore, the quality-of-life features and online connectivity make them more approachable and accessible than ever. The inclusion of Dreamcast ports and in-depth tutorials would make the collection even more valuable, but even without those things it's easy to recommend. Here's hoping Capcom still has something left in the tank for Capcom Fighting Collection 3."
