The Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut PS5 Upgrade Isn’t Fair For Existing Owners

From Article:
"The bad news is that those who own the game on Playstation 4, will have to pay a hefty $30 to get the Playstation 5 version. This is especially disappointing when you realise that people who bought the special/regular edition at launch for £60 will most likely end up paying up to £90 just to get the upgraded version at the end (£60 spent at launch + £30 spent on upgrade)."

I would love a native ps5 upgrade for God of War, horizon zero dawn, the last of us 2 and a lot of other games but in order for that to happen sony needs to pay millions of dollars to developers so it would make sense for sony to charge for those upgrades. Why should sony give those upgrades away for free? I know gamers won't get a lot more upgrades to certain games they like because of backlash from a lot of people who want everything for free

Sonic-and-Crash1410d ago (Edited 1410d ago )

why people wants the Game of the Year 2020 expansion for free??...i dont understand

is not only an upgrade to the techs features , it has a whole damn expansion Island with it, new story, more gameplay

who the hell SP will get paid ? with twitts and good reviews ?? smh

KillBill1410d ago

Point being that Ghost of Tsushima is in the PS Store now for full price of $60. The directors cut which includes the original game and expansion is also selling for $60. So the point is that the early supporters of the game will have to pay $20 more for expansion or $80 in total.

Now if the original game was selling at say $40 on the PS store now then yes you could say it has simply gone down in price after 1yr and the expansion is the $20. But when original game has not been discounted on the store and the new directors cut is the same price then you are seeing the issue.

brewin1410d ago

No one is asking for the expansion for free. There is no option to upgrade the BASE version for free, like there are with other 1st party games. Miles Morales and Sackboy for example. You buy those games on ps4, you get the upgraded ps5 at no extra cost. With Ghost, there is no base version on ps5 to upgrade to! You have to either buy the expansion for $20 on ps4 THEN pay an additional $10 to upgrade that version, or spend $30 to upgrade the base ps4 version to the Director Cut PS5 version! Even if you bought that $70 Special Edition at launch on ps4, you STILL have to spend an additional $10 to upgrade to ps5. That extra $10 upgrade fee is what people are having an issue with, rightfully so.

SinisterKieran1409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

i'm super confused by peoples logic, from what i'm reading..you upgrade from the base ps4 version to the ps5 version for $30. this includes the expansion and the upgrades...this sounds completely fair to me. are people expecting to not pay for the expansion? i think people expect too much for free. this is not just a simple upgrade like miles morales and sackboy.
there isn't base ps5 version..its the directors cut, deal with it. just play the base ps4 game with the free upgrade. simple.

SeTTriP1409d ago

This is a round about way of making ps5 owners pay the $70 bucks for the ps5 version.

Remember it launched on ps4 at $60 bucks, so if you want the ps5 version Sony is going to need that $10 they didn't get from you from buying the ps4 version.

Hence bullshit.

brewin1409d ago

@ settrip

Its more than that though, they are getting the ps4 players who paid $60 to pay $90 for the ps5 version.

The right thing to do would be to charge only $10 more to to the people who pre-ordered or bought for $60 on the PS4 through the PS store. Then it would feel like we were being rewarded for supporting the title early on. As it stands now, getting early supporters to pay $90 is a really crappy thing to do and will keep people like me from buying their titles on day one.

SeTTriP1409d ago

@ berwin

Paying $20 for the expansion is cool no problem with it, paying $70 for the full game and expansion if you never owned it is cool no problem with it.what I'm saying is Sony is really doubling down on charging $70 for ps5 exclusive (its a cross gen game but you get my point)
I brought it on ps4 for $60 now if I want the ps5 upgrade (and I have a ps5) they want that $10.

Ps4 owners only pay for expansion.

I do agree but it still sucks. As if Remasters since the PS3 era weren't already bad enough. Sony is setting up an environment that entices players to not buy their games at launch; especially if it's w/in 1-2 years of a next gen launch. Not only with these releases but the $70 entry point to PS5 titles coupled with the fact Sony/MS games are constantly slashed in price 1-3 months after release. The only PS5 game I've even paid $60 for was Scarlet Nexus last week because Meijer & Walmart didn't have it and Sat Walmart cancelled my Sat pickup order so I just bought it digitally last Sat. otherwise all my PS5 games would have been $50; & yes even Scarlet Nexus was only $50 at Walmart, Amazon, etc.

Anyway I say let sleeping dogs lie. The PS4 versions of these games were great on Pro and even if marginally better on PS5 still better. That being said I see this as a way to continue moving units. A way to entice those who may have gotten a PS5 or do in the future who haven't played these games.

Personally I obtained the platinum in Ghost so I have zero desire to go back and play a game I've already completed 100%. Not to mention the backlog I've been eating at and adding to the past 6 months. Also I really don't care about DLC either as it's something I almost never go back in the play in the rare event I even bought any. Director's Cut? What are we the movie industry now? Release a finished damn product day 1 and move onto the sequel or next game. That's exactly what 98% of gamers do. But the fact of the matter is that these things do cost money. Unlike MS playing from a position of weakness and willing to throw money around Sony is in a position of great strength. Not to say that's reason to charge but they are both a relevant point.

Orbilator1409d ago

Don't like the cost then don't buy it, go play something else. What a bunch of entitled moaners some of us PS5 owners are.

Happy to pay.

People forget we got a new mode for free already and still they moan.

senorfartcushion1409d ago

Master of Unlocking1409d ago

"sony needs to pay millions of dollars to developers"

WTF? Pay millions of $ to the developers of God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, the Last of Us 2 ? You know they're Sony's 1st-party devs, right?

_SilverHawk_1409d ago

Are you stupid? They work for sony and get payed from sony. Just because people are first party playstation developers doesn't mean they work for free. If sony has a whole development studio do all sorts of upgrades and make new environments in a game it takes a lot of time and energy. Quality costs. A lot of people crying about quality game prices are just poor

badz1491409d ago

The media and journalists are all up in arms now trying to crucify Sony over everything. look, I'm all for free stuff all day everyday of the week but I paid for the PS4 version of GoTsushima and that was what I got. we already got the MP portion for free and then playing it with 60fps updates on the PS5 is also a huge bonus that we're not entitled to but got anyway. So are we entitled for a native PS5 version free upgrade? not at all but it would be nice. but what is it that is not fair here? this is exactly like any other games with GoTY versions - $60 or sometimes less for the base game plus all DLCs. the original owner of the games will have no alternative to upgrade their version to the GoTY version for free and either have to pay for the DLCs separately or buy the GoTY version which includes the base game again. this is exactly the same thing. why is it suddenly unfair now? such entitlement this author has over something never promised by the publisher!

I wish people would stop comparing this to Spider-man MM and Sackboy which granted you both the PS4 and PS5 native version for 1 price but those games are launch games and that's a kind of cross-buy promotion.

badz1491407d ago

there was nowhere in my comment I defended Sony or corporations in this. I did say that I would love free stuff ALWAYS but the allegation here that Sony is being unfair is a bit unfair. GoTY versions are a thing and we have been kinda ok with it until now. if this is truly Sony being unfair, should gamers start rioting every time publishers do this? case in point:

1. The Witcher 3 GoTY which includes both expansions? did CDPR give the original owners offer to upgrade to GoTY version? at least on consoles, NOPE! original owners have to buy the expansions separately or buy the game again in its GoTY form to have the GoTY version.

2. MK8 Deluxe has been selling gangbusters on the Switch since release until now, but I don't see people calling out Nintendo for it in droves campaigning against them like this. The original owners of the game can't even play their original copy anymore on Switch and if they want to play on the Switch, have to buy the Deluxe version that includes the DLCs AGAIN! - even worse case than GoTsushima here.

3. Halo MCC - do the previous owners got "fair" treatment that they can just upgrade their old Halo games for free and get all the Xbone MCC features? NO! they have to buy MCC AGAIN to play them on the new console, right??

so tell me, why exactly is this fake outrage over GoTsushima DC is it's not crappy journalists riding the wave trying to downplay everything Sony? again, I would love to get the DC version for FREE but that was never promised and why should I feel entitled for it?

UncertainCategory1409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

This logic would make sense if we had not seen loads of games from studios big and small providing next gen updates for free. Doom just updated to include ray tracing on next gen consoles, didn’t charge a dime for it.

Borderlands 3, elder scrolls online, stellaris, assassins creed, sea of thieves, Overwatch, Ark..

Did I make my point? No?

Okay how about; division 2, avengers, Star Wars Jedi fallen order, remnant, Halo MCC, Outerworlds, gears of war 5, Destiny 2..

Studios big and small have been able to offer free next gen updates for their games. There is no reasonable justification for Sony charging for an experience that many others including freaking EA and Ubisoft have not charged for.

If you are defending this, you’re advocating for a companies profits over providing extra value to consumers. I know some on this site are hardcore Sony fans, but celebrating spending $30 for an experience so many others are giving for free? It’s just wild to me.

badz1491407d ago

not trying to defend them here but none of those games includes additional content like the expansion Island offered here by GoTsushima, right? only the base games

CaptainHenry9161409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

Fire Jim Ryan. Microsoft doesn't charge you to upgrade

brewin1409d ago

@ setttrip

"I brought it on ps4 for $60 now if I want the ps5 upgrade (and I have a ps5) they want that $10. "

"Ps4 owners only pay for expansion."

No you're getting it wrong again! They want $30 for you to upgrade your ps4 version to the ps5 directors cut. Where are you getting it's only an additional $10? You cannot just upgrade from the base $60 ps4 version to the base ps5 version. You HAVE to buy the director's cut content BEFORE you upgrade it to the PS5 or upgrade it directly to the ps5 for $30. The director cut upgrade for the ps4 is $20, but then if you want that on ps5 you are forced to spend another $10. If you never ownef it, getting the ps5 version for $70 is the way to go.

But If you are upgrading from the base ps4 version, you are stuck paying an extra $30. It's confusing and shameful really.

Old news and already on the site. Dead horse topic.

DeadSilence1410d ago

It's a full blown DLC, blood & whine was also 20 euros, here is 20€ + 10€ to upgrade to Ps5.

RaiderNation1410d ago

Cry me a river. I'm buying this day one! Not only to play the DLC but have full blown Dualsense support, 4K, and 3D Audio.

LucasRuinedChildhood1410d ago (Edited 1410d ago )

We didn't need to pay to upgrade to the PS5 version of Miles Morales. This is offers a much smaller upgrade (e.g. no ray tracing, no big visual enhancements mentioned in marketing besides a resolution bump) and it costs money.

It's fair to point out that one Sony game did this much better than the other, along with other exclusives like FF7.

RaiderNation1410d ago

There was already a PS5 patch for Ghost of Tsushima for free. If you don't want to pay for the new one, then stick with that one. The choice is yours.

Extermin8or3_1410d ago

The difference is miles morales released on ps5 day 1. Ghost of tsushima was a ps4 game they reopened the code on and implemented a load of new stuff to give it ps5 support. Clearly it was expensive todo this and they decided to charge. Just like they did for spiderman remastered.

LucasRuinedChildhood1410d ago (Edited 1410d ago )

@Extermin8or3_

No, the reason this is happening is obviously because of a company-wide cross gen policy. Forbidden West and GOW2 are likely going to have a $10 upgrade scheme to their $70 PS5 versions as well.

That's all there is to it. You're trying to rationalize greed. From the marketing, the graphical upgrade is mostly just a resolution bump. No mention of improved lighting or any new graphical features. Dualsense support doesn't require millions of dollars, man. Indie games have it.

lellkay1406d ago

Imagine thinking going back into a PS4 game to add new haptics, adaptive trigger work, 3d audio support and re animating the entire game to mouth sync with jap dub (a feature the fans requested heavily) could be done entirely for free.

This is what you are paying for.

If you want the resolution and FPS boost that is free among all other games, you can have that for free on GOT by popping your PS4 disk in.

It was a great game.
All my Japanese friends loved it.
I remember I would visit my friend who owned a bar and we will talk about the game and sometimes other Japanese dude will join in. Pretty dope

That’s great and a little hilarious how when it was revealed western journalists tried to give off the impression that it came off racist with it being made by non Japanese developers.

CrimsonWing6944d ago

I hope western culture knocks this sh*t off. F*cking Parasites Eve took place in New York, does that make Square a bunch of racists?

RE5 case it’s not that long ago when foreigners were killing local Africans. Leopold 2, killed millions Africans. So that’s a touchy historical topic. We don’t have any story driven games where you playing as Nazi.

Somehow the same western journalists said nothing of AC shadows, when some Japanese were so offended they discussed it with their prime minister in the diet (Japanese parliament).

-Foxtrot44d ago

I've never actually thought of this...

They literally got really snarky with Ghost of Tsushima since it's announcement yet with AC Shadows they said absolutely nothing.

Double standards. Was it because it was Ubisoft or what?
