PlayStation 5 and Series X tested on a CRT - a game-changer for image quality?

Digital Foundry : In the past, Digital Foundry has enthused about the quality of high-end CRTs, the display technology of yesteryear that can still deliver some aspects of image quality that no modern screen can match. We've talked about contrast, precision, motion resolution and much more. Now, two years on from us acquiring the Sony GDM-FW900 - quite possibly the best gaming CRT money can buy - we've tested out how the display works with the new wave of consoles: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Are all of the benefits of CRT still there? How on earth do you connect an HDMI device to an 18-year-old display? How does today's 4K rendering stand up on a CRT screen? And since we first looked at CRTs, have modern displays made any strides in matching up to the strengths of the cathode ray experience?

now tell me how much it weighs. I remember my old Sony Trinitron 32" TV weighing what felt like 300 lbs.

Yi-Long1445d ago

I think the space it takes up is more of a concern than the weight, imo, cause basically you’re only going to be lifting it once when you bring it into your home/living room, and once when you’re done with it and get rid of it, which should be 5+ years later.

Still have very fond memories of Sonic on the Megadrive looking absolutely amazing on one of those old huge CRTs with scart, where the pixel-lines & colors were crystal clear.

Neonridr1445d ago

oh I know, I'm just saying.. plus this one is only a 24" so not as heavy too.

Abear211444d ago

The sharpness in motion and shadow detail close to black really can’t be beat

darthv721445d ago

I still have a 36" wega and yeah... that is one heavy mutha

Neonridr1445d ago

holy man, they are something else, lol. And so front heavy too with that glass XD

wish I had a CRT for retro gaming [even if it would only get once a year] but you're right. 32" plus of CRT weighs a ton. When I sold my 32" Trinitron it was on condition of pick up from where it was stationed. I wasn't about to move that whale anywhere.

Good-Smurf1444d ago (Edited 1444d ago )

My 34 inch FD Trinitron weigh around 185 lbs.
Any CRT no more than 25 inch wasn't that bad to move though.

Abear211444d ago

My parents have a this tv and offered it to me a few years back, I said no bc it’s huge and heavy! Now I gotta ask about it again…dang it

This is why CRT is still unmatched in clarity in motion.
No wonder why I feel so sick try to play old 2D platformer its blurry smeary mess.
The bjggest difference showed on FPS and racing games.
I don't have to worry about input lag as well.
Once my parents took Sharp LED from my house now I'm left with these CRT beasts.

Imortus_san1444d ago

Rather game on OLED all the way, CRT only for retro gaming (8bits and 16 bits), and the PS2 because 480i kills my eyes on modern display.

jivah1443d ago

480i? Did you know that crts can reach 1440 80hz a few going higher than that. And thats super old tech. Imagine if crt tech never stopped evolving over the years

Imortus_san1440d ago

Normal TV CRT dont do that, and yes I had a Philips PC CRT Monitor that was 1600x1200, good for maybe Xbox 360 but pretty bad for today standarts.
