From Nintendo Life: "It’s been eight months since the first expansion DLC for Doom Eternal launched on other systems and now it’s finally here on Switch. If that feels like a long time, consider that the main game took nine months to come to Switch: if anything, things are getting better! Sort of.
The Ancient Gods Part One is a standalone campaign that follows on from the events of Doom Eternal. Without spoiling anything that happened in that game, basically your mission didn’t end with your actions there, and now Hell’s demons are lining up an attempt to take over every dimension so they can invade Earth again."
Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods is a fitting resolution to the Doom Slayer story, filled with challenge and lore. - Rocket Chainsaw
The Ancient Gods brings a new level of challenge but it lacks a really new content.
VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The Ancient Gods - Part One is something of a first for the Doom series, as despite prior games receiving bits and pieces of DLC, the series has never really had a standalone campaign expansion in the past. That all changes with Id Software’s latest offering, which puts players back into the boots of the Doom Slayer and sets them in a post-Doom Eternal story. Unfortunately, said boots probably could have stood to be polished for just a bit longer."
